Well, you can clearly see that everybody who went "why don't you just..." hasn't touched max difficulty with a 10-meter laser power pole. Because holy hell was this difficult! Watching this live on twitch was certainly a privilege.

It is just about pressure, the bases have resource maximums and gather rates. Sending out attacks uses resources faster than they can gather. So just keep attacking a base and eventually it will just run out of resources.

This is what I did. Put down a fortress they can't break, and attack them so every enemy base will pour resources into trying to destroy you, and just wait it out until they run out of matter. Once they can't replenish their forces quickly, you can wipe out individual bases until the planet is yours.

This was the best youtube I've seen you produce. The last one and this one are some of the best youtube vids I've seen on YT in a long while. Whether you do as I suggest below or not - I'm sure you'll endure and be effective. 🙂 To offer a requested "why don't you just..." The Landfall base looks stable for now. If your other planets can support two landfall bases, I'd consider: * Bump the remote demand for ammo and power - turn on supply local, equip ISTMs with logistics drones (for later) * Let those fill up, while you run back home * Stock up on buildings, belts, all the fun gizmos that make the base work * Put down a second Landfall base. If one is stable, two is likely destabilizing. * Place second Landfall based on a re-review of the planet - most likely using a space near the first base. * Set second Landfall base to pull ammo and energy locally so they top up quickly. Once full - turn off local demand and turn on remote demand. * Obviously, use the glorious Battlefield Analysis buildings to build out super quick.

One possibility for the base ... add on a second ring about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way out with a double ring of cannons .. then once you know those are safe add in more missile launchers to ramp up your damage potential... as long as your main base can handle production and transport the next possibility would be to set up one or two more landfall bases in the same ring your on... work your way around the hemisphere ... then take out all the bases towards the pole and then work your way to the equator ... then set up a line of missile launchers all the way around and then work your way to the last pole from there... or leave the opposite side of the planet as a farm and just have bases at the equator picking up the loot and use cannons/lasers instead of Missiles Those are my thoughts on it... loving the series and looking forward to more to come

well if you have room one option might be to stamp down another copy of that base on either side of the first one. 3 might be enough to start pushing outwards. Baring that probably extend a ring of battlefield bases out as far as you can safetly manage and fill the inside with more turrets. I think the biggest issue will be enough throughput from y our home planet.

I use the following approach based on what I observed, you want to exploit the simple Darkfog target acquisition priority to your advantage. Also use the drop and pickup technique for the signal towers. The priority for the Darkfog is the nearest signal tower, unless they are under active bombardment. In that situation the Darkfog will head straight to the source of the rocket barrage. You do not want your target painting signal tower to be on the path to your rockets, but at an oblique angle to your path of rockets (say 70-90deg). Drop the tower, paint the target, and pull it up. Wait for them to depart, then pop it down to paint the buildings. That way the signal tower will not be overrun and destroyed by the wave of Darkfog units. This has a few benefits 1. The enemy will uncover the base buildings allowing your rockets to hit the high priority targets, the buildings 2. The enemy units will come into contact with your artillery, which is better suited for dealing with waves of small units 3. You will spend a lot less signal towers on the assault Now that is definitely not going to be easy on the first two or three bases on such a heavily infested planet. However once you can flank with signal towers this becomes a lot easier to eliminate bases. Remember though, rockets are planetwide. The game is in 3 dimensions, which is what is so cool about Dyson Sphere Project! Think forward observation bases. On such a power abundant planet like that you could use some geothermal to open up a forward observation base, even on the other side of the planet with minimal disruption. At least compared to your massive beacon of your fire base. Then reach out with signal towers and paint Darkfog bases around you. The units will run to the rockets, even across the entire planet, rather than your piddly little signal tower!

At the risk of "you should just" (and I have played w/ max dark fog). Make sure you have enough power to put up shield generators (for all planets in the system) and let those missile launchers hit upper air. The bases without the relay stations start losing energy and wither away pretty quickly. Unfortunately you'll make some new friends pretty quick. :)

Really enjoying this series. I can see how "Why don't you just..." must be frustrating given the extreme difficulty. I think your approach has been amazing, patiently building up and relying on good design and forward planning to build effective defenses before taking the fight to the enemy (only when you have the upper hand so can crush them). It feels a very "Nilaus" way to do it. It feels like when you're ready to go on the offensive, making use of additional power from the lava seams may be useful as long as that doesn't become a weak spot. I could see a strategy where you build some geothermal, build a bunch of lasers that use that geothermal and creep outwards a bit like that. It feels right now like you will need at least 4 or 5x your current firepower to be able to actually overwhelm them, and the lag time to fetch missiles and cannon ammo from your home world might be too much if you scaled up the current setup. Either way I think what you're doing is great.

If you really want to YOLO: one really agressive thing to do would be to ensure your planets are sheilded from bombardment, and then set Missile turrets to destroy the relays. The bases run out of power pretty quickly during assaults and so you can wipe the map of them while the 3 Hives are assaulting a planet without drawing additional aggro. I had plasma turrets operational by that point however, doing it with missile turrets might be too slow.

You can change the Missile turrets to target Space on targets and they will lose there shuttles - Once the shuttle dies the base will slowly drain away it's resources and you have an easier time clearing bases once they are drained. This will trigger the space attacks so you need to have shields placed and more missile turrets on your homeworld set to space.
@Alron222
@Alron222 6 месяцев назад
In my experience there are 2 ways to take over a planet like this one. You can either keep attacking each base until it runs out of energy (this is a SLOW process to do for the entire planet, and only gets slower the further you get away from your fortress). Or the other way is to set up some space defenses on your planets, then destroy the relay stations with your missile turrets. After that, the bases quickly run out of energy and can't produce more units so you can take them out.
@christianvanderstap6257
@christianvanderstap6257 6 месяцев назад
That will mean incoming attacks from the space hives as well. So that needs some prepping on the other planets. Could work, since this is the last planet and that would start the starving process.
@doctort2853
@doctort2853 6 месяцев назад
Nice one. Not sure how fierce the attack from space will be but clearing the bases from ground will probably also trigger that anyway. So maybe just attack the relay station. I am stuck at the same spot and I will try that too :)
@prototype21
@prototype21 6 месяцев назад
Few questions: what are "some spaces defenses", how do you get missile turrets to attack a relay station which is in orbit & not ground. Where do you find the copper needed to spam missiles at the ground command base if thats what you actually meant for my second question. And how do you run them out of energy without increasing the hive's threat?
@doctort2853
@doctort2853 6 месяцев назад
@@prototype21 you can attack a relay station by setting missile turret to attack high air, which is the third option. It is off by default and you can turn it on. You don’t even need a signal tower in most cases you shoot almost globally. By destroying the relay station you will cut off energy for the ground base and material (from this ground base) to space hive. And I assume some space defense means missile turrets + shield for early-mid games. Quantity depends on the difficulty chosen.
@Alron222
@Alron222 6 месяцев назад
@@prototype21 Space defenses means that you get planetary shields to cover your infrastructure, and ideally all your entire colonized planets. Also missile turrets, on max difficulty you'd need at least 20 per planet i would think, but more means that your shields will take less punishment. Copper you will have enough unless you are playing on scarce resources or you already used it all, then you have to set up a dark fog farm and save up. I believe 1 missile is 10 copper total, so if you have 20000 copper left that should be enough to cover 2 planets from at least the first hive atttacks. The shields will cost you a ton of energy though, so save up some batteries and get lots of coal or oil power. Or even better hydrogen if you have managed to unlock orbital collectors. If you want to run them out of energy the hard way, you continually attack the guardians (the spinny star units circling above the base) and keep repelling their attacks. This will mean the whole planet attacks you, but at some point the attacks from that base will stop for a short time as the base has run out of energy and needs to get more shipments from the hive. In that window you can destroy the core of the base, and then the rest of the buildings. But all in all, I think that strategy would cost you even more copper unless you have a very good laser turret setup to defend you, which is very tricky because laser turrets hard had to use to repel mass attacks. This strategy will also increase the hives threat a bit, there is no way around it. But not nearly as much as attacking the relay stations.

Now I'm curious how you'll handle the offensive, cuz, well... it's much to chew through on this planet, lol And, I dare to remind you, it'll be the last step - on your road to conquest - before the culmination point in this system: defeating the space hives. Activating Supernova (which is a feature on all weapons, not a weapon in and of itself. Referring to your choice of words) is more of "Hail-Mary", and most effective against space attacks, as it increases both damage and splash damage (maybe more stats are affected, not 100% sure). Orbital attacks are spread out more than ground units tend to be. Looking at the Hive threat, activating Supernova might become useful next episode, though

Did something similar on my occupied planet (not 25 bases only 13 but all level 20+) and what worked the best for attacking: Hit & Run with only signal towers. Once everything has settled in a bit with raids, only leash out to a single nest and get one volley onto them and quickly retreat the towers. All other nests will try to find you at the location where you placed you last tower and if you + your buildings are gone, they will simply end the raid and retreat.. rince and repeat until done.. takes ages in the beginning because not much space / repairs between attacks / lots of units to retreat but gets faster with every nest you clear because you can safely leave half of your signal-tower-trail standing without any unit crossing it's path.

Well, the only planet I can remember seeing that many Dark Fog bases was in the black hole system. And I used it to get the stuff to get the special Dark Fog science stuff - unfortunately, I did a major mistake. When having the only left ground base at level 16, I thought about wiping one space hive (from two in total) from existence. Nice plan, beautifully executed and then - after a looong while - I noticed I do not get anything from that system anymore and checked it out. I still got my base and they got theirs - but just the buildings and not a single enemy. It seems ground bases and space hives are connected on a even deeper level - not only need the space hives the ground bases for materials, the ground bases need the space hives for energy. If one is missing, the other one will die out. And I accidentally took the wrong space hive out. Ground bases have the greek symbol of their corresponding space hive next to their names when clicking on them... An important thing I totally missed.

Something that needs to be done is to remove the 2 power poles on the four corners and replace them with a signal tower to give your missile turrets additional range on the outside corners, on top of just being more durable power providers for the corner turrets. Second, this is a good blueprint to just set down one at a time, doing what you can to make sure it goes up (like prioritising the battlefield stations for faster construction, using the initial fortresses power to do so) ASAP and just push with multiple of these blueprints one at a time, it'll be slow going, but you should slowly wittle down and destroy one base at a time.

I think it's all about the ratio of turret attack capacity to dark fog unit attack capacity. You have to outproduce in volume, so a second landfall base might give you enough firepower to start the signal tower creep strategy while protecting your assets. You might want to do a signal tower "area" creep instead of a single line now.

I tried this on a planet with 20+ bases. They steam rolled me twice. I had unlocked space fleet though so I rolled through the upper atmosphere destroying their orbital base. This upset the hive but my other planets had shields and missles and felt they could handle the ships they would throw. Without the orbital base the planetary bases don't reinforce or build, like they have no power so you just have to kill off current units and clean up the planet. Grants I am just barely breaching green science for this strat but it made clearing the planet on max difficulty super easy. Didn't help that my landfall location with this design had 3 bases next to me so when they started raid got dump from base defences as well which overwhelmed me. I didn't put fighters in BF bases, might have helped alot.

Yeah it seems like there's definitely room for improvement to the mechanics. Rockets + Signal towers just seem too good, not sure what the best approach would be, whether straight nerf or they rework how signal towers function to an extent. I also wouldn't mind seeing more defensive tech, walls would be a welcome addition IMO, given the space setting there's ample thematic room for wall types, from simpler physical ones (stone>metals>etc.) to more advanced "laser" walls or other space-y technology.

Yikes, that situation looks painful. I am unsure that fortress is up to par, like you said, there isn't enough missile turrets to go on the offensive. One help could be to incorporate the lasers into the forward bases to help with the defense response and use multiple FOB to support the main one with incorporated lasers. Like a delta or triangle formation. Once you place your main tower and set them off the rest of the formation will defend and aggro the units away after the signal tower is destroyed leaving an opportunity to replace it while the units engaging the supporting assets and the unit replicators are on a cool down. That should leave enough time for one tower to be in the heat of things to get the targeting for a decent volley against the main core. Tt might take a couple rounds. The main thing is to watch your health because it isn't obvious when their laser and plasma towers are ripping you to pieces and it is easy to be to close, especially while flying when it seems like a line of site thing with those defense lasers. I would recommend the implosion cannons with the forward bases, but it is such a pain to manually load them. Maybe a blueprint with them included with a box/splitter feed. It all should be great content later. Good luck.

Your Attack pattern blueprint instead of just the tower and those two repair/build units, quadruple that and toss in a good amount of laser turrets to really maximize the push. You could even go so far ans to run it in a strait line and run ammo out there on lvl 3 belts if you wanted to get technical about it. Another thought is to double up on the build you made there and make a second on the same planet and then supplying power at the same time. IDK, I'm just spit balling

My understanding is that the energy exchangers take priority over the other energy sources when they deliver power. So when they calculate how much power they need to deliver, they just ignore that there are other power sources on the network. Example: If your network needs 30MW, generates 100MW by other ways, and you have an energy exchanger. It will output 30MW and the other energy is just wasted. My way to fix this is to have 1:1 ratio of exchangers discharging and charging. The discharging ones max out the charging ones, but when there is not enough power on the network they charge slower. When there is plenty energy on the network, you need even more chargers to make use of that.

I agree implosion cannons a best for defense but I prefer to go all missiles since they can perform all roles. They are good enough for defense and can pivot to offense as soon as you start dropping the signal towers towards the bases. This simplifies management of turret and ammo too. so "why don't you just...." go for mass (~120) missile turrets?

What if instead of the loot sorter you just set up a bunch of battlefield stations with different item filters. As opposed to setting up the loot sorter in the earlier game. Would that be more efficient than placing the loot on a belt to pass through the various filters? That could create a problem of say an item being dropped on the opposite side of the defensive line out of reach of where the station can pick it up, but in that case maybe you could set up a few unfiltered slots which do place stuff on a belt to pass down the line? But that might cause a problem where you end up dumping the things you want onto the belt. Darn if only you could filter the inserters in such a way as to not moving a specific item as opposed to only moving a specific item. Maybe there is a workaround that that can be created with splitters, but maybe by that point it gets too complicated and the regular loot sorter is just easier.

Now this is handy, you could pull a bunch of stuff, stick into a tower (unpowered, just a spot for the home ships to pick up from) and get a bunch of stuff home. Maybe in steps if the "raid" would destroy the tower then you'd need to have everything off before dropping and loading your tower so they won't raid your tower full of loaded up goodies

Mining still consumes power from Icarus, so after a while, the fog will roll in on Icarus. A lot less threat from it's imternal engine than what a single wind turbine gets, but still. (Not trying to say it can't be done, just saying that they will aggro at some point, as long as something (other than the fog themselves, like Icarus' internal engine) uses power. And Icarus uses quite a lot of power taking off into orbit. Go back and forth enough times, and Icarus will get attacked as soon as it lands. This happened to me when trying to get some titanium. After having Icarus set to mine Titanium manually, I went afk as the inventory slowly filled up. About two hours later, I sent Icarus back to get it all smelted and processed. Icarus then got destroyed shortly after landing on the titanium planet, during it's trip to set up my first ILT tower for passive collection. Didn't have a farm set up, as I have pretty much the same sentiment as Nilaus on this matter)
@Alavaria
@Alavaria 6 месяцев назад
@@salemprompthous3820 Thanks, I now know to plan around this, if basically taking off just once means no more going back on max difficulty... ok, it might be possible even on minimum resources to scrounge enough titanium on the starter planet (from the basic rocks you can break) to get the Interplanetary Towers, then land on the fog-occupied planet, and by my looking at the threat meter while mining, pull like 60,000 titanium from it, and have an unpowered tower as a passive pickup point. That might be enough to get at the basic warpers (via graviton lens), which then mean you can try going elsewhere to grab stuff. Ideally an unoccupied system I suppose.. (Though it's been pointed out the game would let you literally slowboat over without warping. It also takes like couple hours to arrive which would be an annoying round trip, even more if you ended up in an occupied spot. but you could at least get a Tower down, and then pull another set of titanium (the logistics ships can also slowboat, which I think without the research they do faster than you). Which would be rather hilarious (but would definitely be enough to research and have warpers when you got back home)

Once more, do not use so many signal towers to push, extend power with something else, maybe wind turbines, put a signal tower down for a second to get a barrage and pull back. Or a cannon line with BABs but without signal towers and again just a signal tower for one or two shots. Otherwise you will drag all attacking waves from that side of the planet to your signal towers at the front and not to your base where you have more cannons and repair BABs than you have at your offense extension.

Playing on difficulty 879% (2x resources, 500% power threat level instead of 1000% but everything else is the same) and I am also stuck at this place. I can set up a foot hold on the lava planet but not unsure how to purge it. Also built 40+ missile turrets and loads of BAB and signal towers, powered by geothermal so a bit easier to sustain. The difficulty is to attack. Anything goes into the range of their turrets gets sniped out instantly, and there is no way to efficiently clear out their structure as they constantly streams stuff out to me and attracts all of my missiles

Fascinating... especially because I tried this setup and for some reason, I don't have enough power for this base with this kind of a power source... which of course is impeding the launch of missiles, and then all other dark fog bases launch attacks on me. I'm not sure how you're getting enough power for the entire base from those two dischargers, but my base is in the red all the time - aka insufficient power. My Dark Fog isn't set to maximum though... almost all settings are at maximum, except the power level and DF base level? I think those I set to 7 instead... and I STILL can't do this planet for some reason (and I'm running out of Iron elsewhere). I think the problem with the power consumption are the two interstellar stations... they just suck up too much energy, so I'll probably leave them unpowered for now.

To attack, you need to destroy the relay stations. Without them, the bases gradually weaken and it becomes easier to capture the planet. This will provoke Lancer attacks, of course, but for me, the lancers attacked only the home planet. Perhaps because of the higher level of energy production. However, nothing prevents you from putting a shield on this planet too. It is not necessary to kill lancers, it is enough to have shields and a reserve of energy. After a while, they retreat on their own. If you want to destroy them with missiles, you will need a very good supply of missiles. 3 hives can send 300+ lancers (at higher levels). It is easiest to destroy relay stations with corvettes, they are defenseless from space.

Well, you can't take out the relays from space without the space ships (they regenerate). I suppose one could try from a mass of ground rockets but that doesn't seem to really solve it... Then again, I think the Dark Fog might not actually have colonized every single planet in every system so it might be possible to find other places that aren't "taken" and instead set up there to get more resources, would be a bit tricky to get the right stuff to do so with just initial planet's resources though

Obviously wouldn't apply to this planet, you needed to clear it for the titanium. But in the future if you did want to do some farming why not assign a heavily infested planet as a designated farm world. Set up some defences at the poles or wherever and just ship out the unique or rare resources off world. Once set up you wouldn't have to put up with the noise.
