How to: Audi/Volkswagen/Skoda/Seat Faulty Car Boot Lock Fix / Car Boot Stuck Shut

Some tips and tricks on how I've managed to get my faulty boot lock to start working again. The issue is really common with Audi and Volkswagen vehicles of the 2003+ era. The issue seems to rise from the fact that the rear wiper motor fails, in turn causing wiper fluid to drip down the inside of the boot, eventually causing the boot lock mechanism to fail or get stuck.

Just wanted to say, thanks so much for this solution. Boot started making that stuttering sound and feared it'd be a garage repair. Your solution worked perfectly. I'd (stupidly) been spraying lubricant in the lower fixture. Tried the method you suggested (literally 15 times) and now works perfectly and silently. Thank you.

My RS6 C6 has the automatic tailgate and would constantly get stuck or make that stutter noise. I was so worried it was the motor causing the issue but this has sorted the problem! Thanks mate 🙏

It’s the same boot mechanism on almost every VAG vehicle from the last 20 years. I can’t believe there weren’t any recalls related to this because it’s clearly a common issue

I have an a3.... Exact same wiper and lock problem ha ha my central locking to the boot is opening randomly too. I disconnected the electrical components to the boot lock and using the key, it works fine.... I will try this wd40 trick though. As for the wiper (mine stopped at 45 degrees ha ha) I've ordered a new motor £28 with free delivery on fleabay).... But first try this. Remove the motor (you'll need to remove the wiper with a 13mm socket, then the door liner and then the motor (3 bolts I can't remember which socket size and the electrical cable). Take the metal backing of of the motor (t10). You'll see a big plastic cog and a metal 'elbow' looking cog mechanism. By pushing the wiper nozzle against a surface this should all pop out. The 'elbow' looking mechanism is attached to the spindle that runs up through to the wiper and it's what gets rusty and seized. Sit it in some vinegar to remove the rust for several hours. This should free it up. Dry, grease and reassemble everything and it should fix the issue..... But you will need to solve the ingress. I think mine was the wiper nozzle itself. Mine was too far gone so I've ordered a new motor.
@BenHuggett
@BenHuggett 4 года назад
Thanks for the input. In the end I went for a wiper delete. The wiper arm was totally seized to the motor so I had to use a saw to get the wiper off. I've just put a bung in the hole and really like how the back of the car looks. I'll probably get a new wiper motor at some point. But I might also fiddle around with the old one using your advice. The WD trick is still working a year later so I have no complaints!
@monkeysmum10
@monkeysmum10 4 года назад
Just tried the wd40 trick. I think the connections are corroded. As I say my lock works fine by key and I disconnected the central locking etc to the boot door. So I don't get any 'boot open' warning lights or random opening anymore.
@BenHuggett
@BenHuggett 4 года назад
@@monkeysmum10 it might actually just be a dead switch rather than the actual latch system. If it's not grounding anymore for example that would case warning lights and the switch not to work, but the manual lock would obviously still work

This is exactly my problem - it sounds like the tailgate mechanism is working but it's still locked. I do wish someone would SLOWLY show a full picture of the inside of the tailgate, to show where exactly that little flap is situated, instead of just rushing with a close up of it. Mine is a 2006, so I don't know if it's the same setup. I've researched for hours trying to find a photo of the tailgate for the same year, so I know what I'm supposed to be lookiing for. The tailgate on mine has the toolkit in it. This video didn't show that, so maybe it's a different year?
@BenHuggett
@BenHuggett 4 года назад
The flap should be very easy to spot if you have it. It's quite a significant bit of plastic. In my case it's located right in the center of the boot, you need a flathead to remove the cover! My toolkit isn't in the boot lid, it's under the floor so I assume our cars are a bit different. Mine is also an 06 but it's a sportback rather than a normal hatch.
@pgreen9705
@pgreen9705 4 года назад
@@BenHuggett - thanks for the reply - I think I can see the flap you mention. You managed to get your tailgate open in order to put the WD40 into the lock mechanism. How did you get it open in the first place in order to access that mechanism? I couldn't see in the first bit what exactly you had to do to open the boot from the inside - thanks.
@BenHuggett
@BenHuggett 4 года назад
I had to fold down the rear seats and crawl through into the boot. The little door/hole/flap is the manual release for the boot. It's a legal requirement in Europe. I just jammed the key into the boot release and I managed to push it open from the inside. It would have been nigh on impossible to film the process because it's so cramped. Fingers crossed you get yours sorted

That's probably just the actuator in the switch that's gone. It's another really common issue with these cars. Moisture makes it's way around the rubber and into the switch. They're not hard to replace as I understand. The part is about £15
