This is such an important conversation~ I like the tithing analogy but have talked with many people who attend church and feel like they can't give10% or even 5% of their income. The Pay Yourself First has also been lost on some of the entrepreneurs I know who say they'd rather buy themselves something with their earnings as that is more of a reward than putting money in savings. During my last couple years of working (at a job) before I retired, I turbo-charged my savings because I wanted to have the ability to use my own savings rather than tap into our family funds. That was a driving force for me and I learned to live on 50% of my income. I was able to start a business (before I retired) to make sure I didn't need to tap social security before age 70 and then Covid happened, so I didn't have to take RMDs from my retirement accounts before this year. Delaying gratification requires discipline and the willingness to see yourself in the future and have a desire for financial independence not for yourself but for your legacy. Thank you both for this great discussion!
