Okay, common archery shooting mistakes start when you actually step up to the shooting line, and are preparing to shoot. Your body alignment with the target should be parallel to the target. Your shoulders should be facing the target. So, you're first initial stance, the way your feet are on the line, they should be parallel with the line.
One you're in that position, placing the hand in the handle is very important. Remember your hand has to be behind the handle. A common mistake is that people grab it like this, with the thumb actually behind the handle. That is going to put a lot of pressure on your thumb, and then cause you to grab the bow tighter, so that you would kick it or torque the bow when you shoot.
So, get your hand behind the bow. When you place your fingers on the string, only three fingers go on the string. See now, not four fingers like a lot of people do, but only three. And, a good way to do this and remember is to put your thumb and your pinkie together. Your thumb and your pinkie together to grab the bow with just three fingers.
So, that's another mistake that happens quite often. Once you have your hand and your fingers in place, when you bring the bow up, here's the big mistake though, a lot of people make. They hyper-extend their elbow into the path of the string. That's going to cause a lot of pain, and also it's going to deflect the arrow and make you inaccurate.
So, bend your arm away from the string, therefore keeping the string clear of being deflected. When you pull back into your anchor position, what you want to do is be consistent with your anchor. You've got to put your hand or fingers on your face in the same place every time. Very important, because that gives you the consistency. When you come back, if you anchor in the corner of your mouth, make sure that you anchor in the corner of your mouth every time.
Some people anchor under their chin. Under your chin, your fingers should always go under your chin, never diverting from that position. Remember always to keep your elbow higher than your shoulder. A lot of people when they first start shooting have a low elbow, because they use their bicep to pull the string back. Try to pull your string back with your bicep. Notice she can't do it, because she has proper form, but a lot of people can't lift their elbow up, until they've practiced a lot and built up the muscles in their back in order for them to do that.
Alright, now when you take your shot, what you want to try to avoid is moving the bow. While you release the string, the bow must stay stable, and in the same position. So, let's try it and take a shot. Come up into your ready position, bend your arm, pull back to your anchor, aim, shoot, and hold in that position. Then come back down to the rest. That was perfect form.

Satan There's a lot of little quirks that are on their bow, and even though the difference is minute, every detail matters.
@Zombinejerry
@Zombinejerry 9 лет назад
Satan Well they have an attachment to the bow that protects the fingers once the arrow is notched onto the string, it actually only takes two fingers to pull back the string and fire one above and below the end of the arrow holding it in place. Usually you want to extend your arm the full length, and wear a bracer to prevent rope burn, you lose a lot of stability when you bend your arm like that to avoid the string.

I had been taught to keep my elbow so my forearm is parallel to the ground (inline with my shoulder). I think my elbow that high would burn my shoulder out pretty quickly. I can understand a higher elbow with a mechanical release, and that it's better a slightly higher elbow than one too low. Even finger pressure on the string is easier with a level forearm, where a high elbow may mean neutral tiller may not make sense with the added pressure on the low fingers. Good video in any case.

I started archery July 27 and now I'm learning how to shoot a bow and arrow correctly and properly for the shooting range. I don't dry fire because that will damage my bow. My stance is good, but my wrist isn't always straight when I pull back, and my bow arm is slightly bent. I'm working on it though. Thanks!

Ziirf Really??? News to me and I have been shooting quite straight for over 45 years. Look at Howard Hill or Byron Ferguson. They both shoot with the same hold I do. One finger over and 2 under. Howard Hill was a tournament archer as well, and never lost a tournament.

pickin4you If you have 1 finger over and 2 under i bet you are touching the string and not the arrow.

Ziirf Really? Well they are my fingers and my arrows and my string, and I know I am touching both the string and the arrow. You cannot win this argument with me. I have been shooting this way for over 45 years. I think I know what I am talking about. Not sure where you learned about shooting or how you shoot, but I feel sorry for you if you think you should never touch the arrow or it will not go straight.

And by touching you mean the slight contact that you have have with the arrow as you are hold the string? - If you as you say have 45 years of archery under your belt you should have know i mean by "do not touch the arrow" to the comment i replied to which were: "what happened to actually holding the arrow?"

for one thing you do not hold the riser with a closed hand, You should rest the handle of the riser between you're thumb and indexfinger but to help that you should use a sling or you can also put you're index finger and thumb around the handle but no other fingers,Not doing this can twist you're limbs and you're bow string won't align correctly with the limbs

sigh, some people do shoot three under they have tabs for that too,but you are right a split tab is one over two under, instead of three under, and you dont want to grip the bow tight will cause the bow to shoot higher or off center usually, consistancy is key to developing some sence of knowing where your arrow is going to land, shooting instinctive or by memory that is, also there is a style to shoot off thumb in the differant horsebow styles or japanese style but another can of worms it is.

Ah I gotcha, there is still a little sting from feathers though, although no cut like you said. As far as the shelf concept goes I can understand that but she's using a recurve (which was what 337 giants question was in referance to) with an arrow rest on it. Not a long bow.

I know that is the thumb ring horsebow style shooting, same with the yumi three fingers over your thumb of the ugake or glove in kyudo archery, but there are a few schools of thought on kyudo, both very slow and methodical today as they are for zen cultivation and the hardest form of meditation there is even more then chado or sado tea ceremony in Japan, in korea and mongolian they use the thumb ring I know.

She is using an eye anchor (looking along the arrow), which is VERY DANGEROUS. In the event of a misfire where the arrow gets caught up on the belly of the bow or the nock separates or the arrow breaks, it will be propelled back into your eye. A lot of people teach beginners to draw with three fingers under the arrow because it is convenient. The only problem is that beginners will often start looking along the arrow and leave a gap. The one-above-two below grip prevents catastrophic injury.

Please help me to understand something here. I have gotten back into my Archery after a forced 21 year break due to my younger brothers steeling all my things (Including ALL of my Archery gear.) & selling or giving it all away just to spite me! I was taught (First by my English Grandfather & then by my school Coach.) to tilt my bow a wee bit to my right, hold onto the shaft at the nock with my first & middle finger as I would draw back with three fingers & loose my shaft. BUT! Here you have the young lady loading the shaft WELL ABOVE her right hand with her hand no where close to the shaft as she draws back & looses the shaft. I am shooting a 58 inch long, 45# pull, Hickory bow with a "Flemish Twist" Dacron string. It is not one of these fancy compound bows or a fancy take down Recurve bow. It is just a good, old fashioned bow! If I had tried to shoot the way the young lady is shooting here, my Grandfather would have paddled my backside with MY OWN BOW & my Middle School & High School Coach would have had me running laps till I thought I was dead! What is so different between 1964 to 1977 & today? I have been told by experts in England that I am doing it all correctly as my Grandfather had started teaching me at 8 years old & my Coach just kept it up the same way! Why the difference?
@Xgarbil
@Xgarbil 10 лет назад
actually in my opinion this video is pretty much bullshit. it doesn't matter how you shot but how well you score. there's no one way of doing things there are lots and not all of them are wrong or right for that matter, just what suits you
@LadyRoyce
@LadyRoyce 10 лет назад
Gar As I said before. My Grandfather was from England. He was an honest to goodness English Lord in name only & a Knight Of The Realm. No property nor money involved here due to a SNAFU between the Crown & the family over taxes AGES & AGES AGO! But he taught me all that he felt a young English Noble SHOULD know about defending ones Goddess, (God.) Family, Queen, Country & those weaker then ones self & unable to defend themselves! He HATED GUNS & taught me archery with an English Longbow, Crossbow, (NOT these new things that look more like a gun then a crossbow these days!) Swords & other old weapons used in England during the Renaissance. So, when I was watching these videos, I was a bit confused as to the way the young lady was getting ready to loose that shaft because it went against EVERYTHING Grandfather & my Coach taught me. I can defiantly use the exercises I have seen here during these cold, Cold, COLD winters here in Wisconsin & I am not able to get out & practice. BUT! There are other things that I am just going to have to ignore because they look like they are meant for archers using a compound bow & I do not shoot one of those "Cheaters bows." (Do you get the feeling that I DO NOT like a compound bow!) :-))
@Xgarbil
@Xgarbil 10 лет назад
of course i do, it's not just cheating, you also lie to yourself in my opinion. we can easily calculate our own strength but when things like that come to our hands we think too much of ourselves and overestimate our own power.. not only does it not teach us the right morals but it also gives us illusions about what we're capable of. but at the same time i don't think that if someone scores 98/100 you can tell him it's the wrong way because honestly it's not. even tho i'm old fashioned myself & i do hope to teach my children and children's children the old ways of bow and arrow i will not force them into it like i would assume your grandfather did, your body is good enough at estimating stuff and all these "rules" just ruin it to me :l (& "nobles" are nothing more than just people who thought of themselves more than others, so i hate "nobles")
@LadyRoyce
@LadyRoyce 10 лет назад
Gar You say, "nobles" are nothing more than just people who thought of themselves more than others, so i hate "nobles" I can not speak about others that were (And still are today. Just look at Federal,, State & Local Government.) that way, but my Grandfather was defiantly NOT that way & would have paddled my tail end if I acted that way! When he could leave the booze (His ONE huge downfall.) alone, he would have killed to protect someone weaker then himself AND given that person the shirt off his back. I was not allowed to act all stuck up & like I was better then others & I remember those lessons (ALL OF THEM!) to this day. I know how to behave in any given situation from dining with The Queen to having dinner at Dairy Queen & all points in-between. I am very proud of the title & responsibilities that he left me. Do I let it go to my head? ONLY where it counts & that is at The Renaissance festival I do volunteer work at two months a year. I use it against those that are playing like they are nobles during the weekends & then go too far with it & start acting like they are hot stuff ALL THE TIME & treat others around them poorly. Then I have a go at them with all the training Grandfather gave me & from the totally legal standpoint of being a real Lady Of The Realm & treat them worse then they were passing out to others! It has taken me doing that to one person 5 times before he got the point that he IS NOT a noble & even if he were, it does not give him the right to treat others poorly! The others I got after learned very fast that they had stepped over the line & did not do it again. SO! Please keep in mind that NOT all Nobles are the way you think they are. Some are very like the way Grandfather taught me to be & are not even able to act like the stuck-up ones!
@bullvalene
@bullvalene 10 лет назад
And if you were in asia you would be paddled if you draw it back with anything other than your thumb, what is your point? Some native americans used 2 fingers, others pull by the arrow instead of the string. He is not demonstrating traditional english archery with a "D" shaped yew self bow.

it's acceptable. contrary to this guy's instruction, there are actually a few acceptable methods to draw. the three finger method is the easiest and most common which is why he was advising it. but some archery methods use 2 fingers. some use 3 with the arrow between the 1st and 2nd finger on the string, others with it above the 1st on the string. in the east, archers commonly used a small tab in the hand to pull the string back, anchoring the tab with their thumb.

So why are all of her fingers over an inch below the nock point?
@TargeTrigger
@TargeTrigger 11 лет назад
Her hand is not too low on the string, she was probably using the String walking aiming technique.

I thought it was just me seeing mistakes. Its mainly in her arms her elbow is really high and also ive seen her bow arm straight and she never wears a arm guard and with her elbow she isn't rolling on the release .I almost starting questioning myself when shooting now I feel better knowing other people see the mistakes.

10 seconds in and already have a question: how to set up a shot in a non-practice range? from a tree stand or something?

Her bow arm is hyper extended. Notice the inside of the elbow is facing up.

Amount of fingers on the string isnt that important to be 3, using 4 is bad but u could also use 2.

you should actully put on finger above the arrow and two on the bottom
@lazygizmo

You forgot rule number one to beginner archery: You must have an arrow in your bow as you draw or you risk damaging the bow. The arrow acts as a counter shock to the tension of the draw. If there is no arrow in your draw as you release the shock goes to your bow instead causing damage. I made that mistake. I didn't realize that arrows were actually needed to pull a bow.

I think you might have missed that they did not let the string go without an arrow. Or, you misunderstood the principle. It is alright to draw a bow back without an arrow in it. It is not alright to 'dry fire' a bow, meaning you draw back and then release without an arrow nocked. Pulling back and then slowly letting the string return does not damage your bow. Dry firing might. They did not dry fire in this video.

A heads-up on your video, try to have another, extra, camera so that we can see what is going on as she anchors, and from the side to see the angle of the elbow. Also, ask the model to pull her hair up, as it gets in the way of the shot (camera shot) to watch in detail. Thank you for the video.

Why did he keep saying parallel to the target? I believe he meant your feet and shoulders should be perpendicular...I think he meant perpendicular "Common mistakes when recording a tutorial video" xD

Thunderheart2186 I think he mean the target as if it were a coin rolling, the part would actually shoot would be the sides, but I think he mean the way it would roll, if that makes any sense.
