We have been to a TON of whiskey festivals over the years. And wow, have we seen some crazy things!
Here are some tips to avoid looking like a complete idiot at a whiskey festival. Also, we share some funny stories, haha!

Have not been to a festival but we have made 2 trips to Kentucky. The first trip taught us to pace! Now we try to share tastings if possible because neither of us want to get intoxicated.

Great information as always! I always try to drink plenty of water when I'm tasting, but it can so easily get ahead of you. My husband doesn't drink, so I always have my designated driver!

I’m on the distributor side. I got tickets to whiskey riot for a buddy and myself. Told him, this is 3 hours of drinking HARD. I EXPECT you to drink a bottle of water per hour. You won’t survive if you don’t. He did and we survived lol.

I was taught young to not be wasteful. Never been to a Whiskey festival but hopefully in the near future. How about an infinity flask for the festival?! No dump bucket needed.😅

Bourbon is such an experience for me. I think there are alot of people in it that don't enjoy it they just want to fit in. I can't force myself to drink something just because everyone else is doing it.

I've been to various state fairs and such like (I've never been to a whiskey festival 🙂), and I quickly decided that I won't pile onto a long line, unless it's food that I really want. There's just so much else I can spend my time and energy on without having to stand in one place for half an hour. And I've found some really enjoyable booths and tables that way - booths and tables that I could examine without everybody and his ruder brother shoving at me. 🙂

I always apologize as i dump. I've also been amazed at the number of reps that are pouring several ounces into my tasting glass. It's like, are you trying to kill me?

As a LEO, I have dealt with hundreds, if not thousands, of extremely intoxicated people. At first it is funny, then it becomes routine and becomes slightly annoying, and then, after years and years, it becomes an absolute nightmare. My tolerance for overly intoxicated and obnoxious people is very low. Kudos to you Randy because they are not fun to deal with!

Went to an event...and shared the pour with my wife. Definitely drank water between stops. And only tasted whiskeys that I never tried. Discovery is what is was all about! Well done with de-escalating the situation with the woman. That is the best way to work through the situation! The Uber driver probably charged him $350 for the clean up!!!!

Never been to a whiskey fest but want to at some point. Family is not big into whiskeys so I’d be going by myself. The ones around me need to have a DD ticket for a lower price Been to a lot of bars with a good selection and always only try things that I’ve never had before.

That's s because you can't actually offer dd tickets. Any ticket sold has to allow full access to all drinks in the building

@@KristopherHart Actually noticed after posting this that one of the Detroit larger Whiskey fests does have a DD ticket option. More then 1/2 off the price of a standard ticket.

I have been tempted to attend the new whiskey festival in Beaumont the last few years. But unless they start offering a free ticket for designated drivers, I think I will continue to pass. I'm not dropping $80 just for a DD ticket. And the festival that takes place in Houston doesn't even discount DD tickets at all.

@@StillLivinginthewoods it's a facade. Technically in Texas for that type of event, the way it is structured if you are in the building you get access to alcohol regardless of whether or not you've even bought a ticket. Even though you have a DD ticket you can still drink and they can't stop you

Every event I have been too limits the samples for the reasons explained at the end. Of course some people share their coupons, but then the vendor is responsible to not serve people who are drunk. Just stupid behavior.

Not really a vendor problem. The people who get that drunk drink so fast that they have the alcohol to nearly kill them in their stomach before the signs of their intoxication are obvious. The devolve quickly.

@@BourbonRealTalk Didn't mean to say it is a vendor problem. As a vendor myself, the event organizers always tell us to limit anyone who seems drunk. Most of the time when coupons are shared the person giving up the tickets is the DD and not drinking. Agree 100% that people should be responsible for themselves, but we know some are stupid.

I am not aware of that market. We go to Houston Whiskey Social (only Houston), Whiskey Riot, and Whiskey Washback. The last two might have locations there.

I want to echo what Zach_Hewitt said below. Whiskey events are an opportunity for me to taste things that I am not familiar with. I am particularly looking for things that I am not comfortable investing in, because of a particular price point, not knowing if I am going to enjoy that spirit or not. If I find I enjoy it, then by all means, lets go out and buy a bottle or two. Also, this is the first time I had seen the ad for your whiskey glass. I can assure them that there are far more people making that glass shape than just you. Since I now know how they reacted, I am completely comfortable ordering cheap knock off glasses from China. But I am also going to give your glass a try as well.

I was going to apply for a design patent, but after we had the custom mold made we discovered a couple of other companies with a glass so similar that it would not be possible.

As a firefighter, both the cop and firefighter were in the wrong. They were called to the scene for the couple for real medical reasons (unresponsive, puking all over themselves, ETOH). With their level of inebriation, they are considered to have an altered mental status, which means they are unable to make safe, responsible decisions for themselves and can not refuse to go to the hospital. Doesn't matter if they are in a private vehicle. They are forced to go to the hospital under implied consent, which means it is assumed that someone who is unconscious or lacks responsible decision makings capacity would consent to medical care.
