Thank you for this! Another typical scam is as you're walking near a site, someone behind you will shout at you and say "hey, you dropped this" and show you a nice gold ring or other piece of jewelry. They'll put it in your hand and while you're looking at it and saying that it is not yours (you're distracted), their accomplice will try to take something from your bags or your pockets. They once tried that on me. I said "merci", put the ring in my pocket and walked away. Of course, they made a fuss. I turned around, gave the ring back, and asked them not so nicely to get out of my face.

During our most recent Paris trip in 2017 my wife totally pissed off a scammer who was claiming she was deaf. We had walked past her and her partner having a spoken conversation. A little while later my wife noticed one of them working this couple with the “I am Deaf, please sign my petition and donate” deal. My wife walked right up behind the scammer, looked straight at the couple and said “She’s not deaf.” The scammer quickly turned around glaring at my wife as the couple walked off.

Hello Colleen and Antoine, While watching this video, I realized we fell into the rickshaw tram scam when we were in Paris. We were very tired and approached a rickshaw driver about the cost of a ride. He said 40€ so we considered it and thought it was worth it but you know what happened. When we got to the tour boat area near Eiffel Tower it was not 40 but 80€ . We paid and learned our lesson. We also had a very lovely lady approach us in Gare de Lyon train station to warn me that I was carrying my day pack in a very careless way. We were tired once again having travelled from Chamonix that day and I had let my guard down. We were so grateful for her kind warning. Just appreciated her speaking to us and grateful I had enough French comprehension to understand the warning. So many kind people everywhere you travel. Travel and days packed with new sights and experiences can be quite exhausting and pickpockets and thieves are very good at spotting the weary novice. It’s their job. Be aware of how tired you are becoming and plan breaks to refuel and be more vigilant at times nearing the end of your day so as Not to become a target. Thought the whistle was a very good idea. I would say, wear the whistle around your neck, under your shirt if you wish, whenever you are out in tourist areas. It is a very small item but having it at your immediate disposal,when called upon is the insurance you can use in the moment it might be needed.

Currently on my first trip ever to Paris and I was scammed minutes after arrival. We took the Eurostar and we’re funneled into the taxi line (yes a legit taxi). We got into his car and he switched his meter to a fixed rate of €63. We asked if that was really the rate because it seemed high and he said “yes because you’re going left bank.” We also asked to pay with a card and he said he only took cash. It was only after arriving at our hotel did we find that our trip from Gare du Nord to Musee d’Orsay should have only cost about 1/3 to 1/2 of what we paid. Would be good for your viewers to know what we learned the hard way: taxis by law MUST take credit cards, MUST give you a receipt, and frankly just take an Uber!

It’s mad to think restaurants and cafés are scamming their customers. I got scammed years ago for two coffees and I was with my French girlfriend at the time. Learned very quickly to always ask for price in advance. Also, a side note; those fake surveys have another part to the scam where they use the clipboard to hide your phone if it is on a table and then steal it while it’s under cover of the clipboard.
@pierreboyer9277

Yeah, never leave your smartphone on the table of a restaurant. There're plenty of ways to get robbed in this situation. Few months ago I heard of someone pretending to be drunk with a bottle of vodka in hand, and coming to a table to seemingly play the very drunk falling on the table trying to discuss, the kind of drunk that you want to get rid of asap. It was an act he just stole a phone.

A couple years ago visited Paris with my son and daughter. We dropped our bags at the hostel and walked over to Sacré-Cœur. In less than 5 minutes my daughter had someone tying a bracelet around her wrist. I immediately assumed it was a hustle but wasn't too bothered as I see this as part of traveling these days and at the least she would have something to keep out of the deal. They ran through their script and we joked a bit back and forth. Then, they asked for money. I smiled and handed over 3 euros. They immediately tried to tell me it needed to be 15 and I was clear that they got their 3 and they should be happy with that. Then, things got weird. The 'head' guy smiles, guffaws and says something along the lines of "then I guess we will just have to kidnap your daughter" and while the others laughed good naturally, the head guy actually gave me a look. Like, a serious attempted intimidating look. I calmly gave him my "dude, I am a crazy ass American from Chicago so you decide where this goes next" look back and after a few short moments his demeanor eases and he laughs it off. This one really shocked me. Again, I have seen my share of scams and hustles but this was the first time that I had come even close to any kind of an even implied threat. I still agree that they only want the cash and have zero interest in confrontation or unwanted attention, but this one felt like it really came right up to that line.

While in Paris near the Louvre my wife and I saw some girls with clipboards. Now, We had heard about this scam and others and knew to stay away. Before we went I even purchased pickpocket proof pants and a vest. I even have a hard time finding and getting into the pockets. However back to the event a guy nearby, just a few feet, stopped us and asked a question. We said NO, but he wouldn’t give up. We kept walking but he got in front of us and stopped us again. Then he started tapping my vest with a pencil. We had enough and were no longer the polite tourist said NON! and walked away. If you have to be rude … BE RUDE! They are not your friends. We’ve been back to Paris since without incident… just be aware.

Nicely put together! I never feel scared in Paris but these people are so annoying! They are everywhere à bit touristy or crammed with people! Watch out for the funicular to and from Montmartre at each entrance their little hands going to Handbag just before getting in and they run away whilst you are moving inside with the crowd and they keep out you get trapped in with the motion of people getting in. I’ve visited Paris dozens of times, and the one and only time I ever had a “rude Parisian” experience was in a small bistro. My wife and I went in to get some lunch, and there was already a table with a group of very obnoxiously loud Americans there. We sat as far from them as we could, but the waiter very obviously wanted nothing to do with them, and nothing to do with us by association. He treated us with obvious contempt, when we could get him to come over to us at all, even though we weren’t acting anything like the other group and were as annoyed with them as everyone else there was. So not only will being loud and boisterous mark you as an American, it will probably be seen as being rude and get you treated rudely in return. The only scam I’ve ever encountered personally was the “I found this ring, is it yours?”, also when I was with my wife. We had visited a museum near the Eiffel Tower, and were accosted almost as soon as we left. We just kept insisting that we didn’t want anything to do with it and kept walking away, The guy was quite large and did get angry and aggressive, which was concerning, but eventually he did leave us alone. The whistle probably would have been helpful there.

Some remarks. With the bracelet trick they make you feel compelled to pay because they put on the bracelet but you can always demand them to take if off again since you did not ask for it and since they did not say in advance a prince was due. You want money for the bracelet? In that case I do not want it, take it off? You can not do that? Then goodbye. And otherwise, just make a scene or walk away. The taxi trick I experience although not in Paris but Manila, the taxi mislead me as he showed a picture of a hotel with a price of 3600 peso (EUR 60) per night and afterwards that turned out to be the price of the ride. I told him I would not pay, and in the end paid EUR 10 (PHP 600); the hotel later said they reported the driver. So here as well, make a scene and insist on the price they mislead you to suggest. 15 per person while you heard 15 overall? Here is EUR 15 and I am not going to discuss further, goodbye Sir. Good chance they leave it at that. Another trick you encounter a lot in Paris are fake subway tickets. A ´helpful subway employee´ offers to sell you a ticket for a hefty price when he sees you struggling with the vending machine. Not only does he overcharge you but also the ticket is a children´s ticket which opens the tourniquet but puts you at risk of being fined if you get checked. Here too, only buy tickets at the counter or vending machine and if somebody approaches you, leave or tell him to go away. As for the violence, not only might you get yourself in legal trouble but scammers are street-smart and more familiar with violence than you are. Unless you have a military background they will probably wrestle themselves free and you never know what kind of harm they may inflict on you if they feel threatened.

When they scanned ours, they officer said it's invalid and asked us to step aside and we have to pay 35 euros in cash as fine for using invalid ticket. and when we looked at all the people whose tickets are invalid, we are all tourists (British, Japanese, Indians, etc.). I kept asking why my ticket is invalid but they're not answering. I tried calling 112 but they queue for English was long. We were all shouting for help but no one bothered to help us. Until we all finally decide to just go up. They were intimidating us and blocking us but thankfully no one tried to hurt us until we just made it to the exit.

Just came back from Paris and I saw those girls with fake surveys, I knew they were trouble 😂. I was lucky enough not to see anything else even though I was travelling on the #1 métro line all the time 😂. I stumbled upon the video while looking to watch videos of Paris to feed my nostalgia, I would have liked to see it before I went. I would have been more confident when I arrived.

I was in Paris last week and was pickpocketed at Opera station and the thieves, 3 of them and my credit cards only wallet was pickpocketed; however for unknown reason to me the chief of thieves returned the wallet to me intact. I didn't realized that they had successfully pickpocketed the wallet until he returned it to me. I'm lucky this time. Other than that Paris is great.

Confused by the champagne example-why do you consider this a scam? It sounds like they brought you what was ordered, it was just more than you wanted to pay for it, but did you not check the price before ordering? Or did they actually charge you more than what was on the menu?
@LesFrenchiesTravel
@LesFrenchiesTravel 10 месяцев назад
We didn't order from the menu. Just asked for a glass of champagne. We could taste that it was not "good" champagne (we do order often and know a thing or two about the quality). We were charged WAY too much for what we received. We don't mind paying extra for the good stuff.

If a realUnicef person asks you for a donation for instance, and you offer cash, they'll answer that they're not allowed to take cash. No real organisation accepts cash in the street

hi from a french native pov they are relevant and exist in cities like Nice, Montpellier and Aix-en-provence - the deaf scam sometimes shows a table on a paper, and asks for a "signature", looking like a free petition to help. But then they move their fingers and you see on the next colum is written 10 euros - asking to use your phone (because they want to call their parents or w/e) : sometimes its legit, but as a tourist you probably dont want to risk losing your information tool if they run away with it - games in fairs with rewards : they're always fake/low quality (might as well buy the plush from the store) and "guessing" games like the cup, or the "find the correct envelope in this mess", you'll lose 100%, there's no luck or skill involved in those. Even casino games are better - not a scam but you are a sitting duck for snatching while next to bus/tramway doors ; and when your belongings are on aisle side on trains

Hi guys brilliant vlog and such great advice, thank you for making it and sharing your knowledge. In the time of the great luggage losses and delays now that everyone is traveling again can you do a piece on where to buy basics like underwear, replacement pants, shirts toiletries etc can you also include it for a plus size person. I'm talking a range you would wear yourselves and enough for 2-3 days. This would be helpful for those whose luggage has gone walk about. Another thing can you please share with us the details of your filing equipment. Do you use your I phone or something like a Cannon GCX7 and a hand held tripod or a simple gopro on a tripod? Cheers K 👩‍💼😊

Oh my gosh, it's a very safe city, I've lived here for the last almost 20 years of my life and I've never been scammed or robbed even though I had the very bad habit of always carrying my phone in my back pocket, but my jeans are always tight fitting and if there's a crowd I'd put a hand over it. Just use your common sense, don't engage with people who look sus (which can be said for every city in the world) and you'll be fine.

Seasoned traveler here- Just got back from my 4th trip to Paris via London. Scams all over. I travel alone. 59 year old female. US citizen I see it all. My routine is: I carry only 50 euro, pounds, etc. In a pouch around my neck, with a cut proof cord- long enough that I tuck it in my waist band under my shirt I carry the rest of my cash, along with the name of my hotel, my emergency contact information- and a photo copy of my passport JUST IN CASE. credit card, passport and ID. The 50 is my working cash. That goes in a crossbody (brand by Travelon which is a wire reinforced crossbody with RFID proof interior. I take a backpack that carries snacks, a jacket, spare shoes drinks, a few souvenirs etc. I've been to 30 countries, countless cities and NEVER have been scammed, pick pocketed, or robbed. I wouldn't bet my life that I wasn't over charged for things but I do every thing in my power to keep things simple. Paris, Lisbon-Portugal, Rome and and Barcelona would be the ones to stay alert in. London has it's moments but easy to avoid if you know what to do. I ALWAYS call them out if I see they've got someone on a hook. I don't hesitate.

Great channel. Been to Paris and will return. However, if warranted I will fcuk up a scammer if necessary being a NYer. However, when I was there most Parisian thought I was native because I dress extremely well ( read: Not American or "flashy" as I know how the French roll) and carry myself as a grown "quiet" man. Looking forward to going back.

Thank you sharing the tips about scam . When we were in Paris last time. we met some of the scammer near the Arc of the Triomphe but they backed right off when they were confronted by the four very angry Asians with a loud voice. They tended to pick on lone traveller but if you are in a group & let them know that you are watching them so they will wandering off to pick on another victim. A whistle or scream is a good tip

Paris is definitely not a safe place … an exceptional dangerous place for us Asian tourists … Not so different from all other major cities in W.Europe .. Rome .. Barcelona .. London .. Madrid etc … we’re vulnerable to all street crimes .. particularly pick pockets .. in any busier subway lines there .. Been to all major cities there .. really a pain in the neck to watch ourselves .. turning over heads around during quieter evening hours on less crowded streets .. by then we’d worry more about robbery than pick pockets .. We do have a solution .. she don’t carry purse .. I don’t carry wallet .. only a tiny plastic bag thin enough to have a credit card and paper money .. in the tight front jean pocket

We locals wear sneakers all the time. We mostly wear the kind of sneakers that look the most like casual shoes instead of the gym kind of sneakers, but if you go for the colorful sneakers it won't make a huge difference. It's not your shoes that will give you away. It's how you look and behave as a whole...we know when someone is a tourist, it doesn't matter if they're white, black, Asian, we just know. We also know when a black of Asian person is a local and not a tourist.
