Great job. It is the basics that are all too ofter accepted as little things that everyone thinks they understand. Like any job, it is the nuances that will save a job from being shut down because of an accident or machine downtime.

Thanks Marty! I agree, rock trucks are a skill that nobody talks about because everyone assumes a monkey can do it. We only think that because we all struggled 10+ years ago and forgot how hard it was at first.

@@DieselandIron Looking forward to your next talk about the basics for heavy construction. Very interested in how you orient and manage the excavator and the rock truck. Specifically, in establishing a bench and how to stagger and position for the most efficient loading of the rock trucks. Keep up the great content.

I loved the trailer comparison used. One thing that helped me when I first started driving is to treat it like a truck and trailer when backing up (except the steering input, that one got me at first). Set yourself up as straight as you can before backing up. Sometimes you can't always do that, but maybe when first getting to know the equipment, if you keep it in mind, it will help a ton.

100%. I was probably two days in before it finally clicked that I needed to treat it like a truck and trailer. It went from being impossible to back up to me nailing it every time.

Dumb question . Do you turn the steering wheel the opposite to the direction you want to reverse in ?
@DieselandIron
@DieselandIron 4 месяца назад
No. If you want to back up to the right then you will turn the wheel to the right. This would only change if you had a trailer behind the vehicle.

Bryan are these easy to jack knife?
@DieselandIron
@DieselandIron 2 года назад
They don't jack knife. They have a limit to how far they can crank over.

@@DieselandIronis it ok to dump while Jack knifed if on level ground?
@DieselandIron
@DieselandIron 4 месяца назад
Yes, you can dump at any angle as long as you are mostly flat.

Luckily on this video it was just a reference mark. On most jobs though....don't touch it!

I’m on a stripping crew running a rock truck. I have no issues backing up to the hoe bucket. What I’m having a hard time with is back up straight to the berm to dump off the edge. One side always hits first and I end up titled. The truck has a safety feature that won’t let you dump past a 15% tilt. Then I reposition myself and the dozer man yells at me that I’m tearing up the dump site. Any tips?
@DieselandIron
@DieselandIron 4 месяца назад
As you back up to the berm one of your tires will hit first. In this case let's say it is our right hand side. Pull forward slightly and then turn the truck to the right (into the side that's hitting first). This will cause the back end of the rock truck to angle that direction which will cause the tires to hit more evenly. Also, don't be afraid to dump at a slight angle. These trucks are made to dump on uneven surfaces. While you shouldn't be reckless, I see a lot of operators that are too nervous to dump at any sort of angle. They will spend 5 minutes trying to back up and get their truck perfectly level before feeling comfortable. This kills production and really isn't putting the truck to work the way it was intended. Hope this helps!

A day after I made this comment an old timer jumped in the buddy seat with me and more or less said told me the same thing you did. He said if the truck will let you dump then let er fly. I appreciate the advice. Thank you

hi Brian just a bit off topic from your video have you run an excavator with an engcon rototilt hitch what are your thoughts, I've run one for a bit years ago on an jcb 130 found it was to heavy js are not a very good machine bit too light ,any way boss has said he wants to fit one on my volvo 145 I'm concerned about the loss of breakout force and stability of my machine also I won't be able to use boxes on deep drainage because of the rams I'm in the uk don't know if you call shoreing boxes,anyway be interested in your thoughts and your viewers thoughts could you do a video on tilt rotators ? thanks ,Colin from uk
@DieselandIron
@DieselandIron 2 года назад
Colin, I apologize for taking a bit to respond to your comment. I don't know that I would throw any sort of rototilt on a mainline machine. You lose breakout force for digging, you lose lifting capacity due to the weight of the attachment and as you stated, you can't get into tight boxes due to the rams sticking out on each side of the tilt rotator. If this were a regular grading machine then I would say go for it but, not on a machine used for digging in underground utilities.

As a guy with zero experience in a articulated rock truck anyone have any key pointers to make things a little smoother. Cuz I’m getting put in the mine without a trainer

Nice, smooth motions with the steering wheel. That will keep you from jerking yourself all over the place. Other than that, watch my rock truck videos and I cover most of the other stuff
