Don't get intimidated with the other truckers around you when you are backing up a trailer. Just stay focus of what you are doing and take your time. If your not sure and feel you gonna hit on the blind side, just go out and take a look. It wasn't forbidden. " do not be intimidated with the other truckers " especially if you're new driving a semi truck. Keep the rubber side down strappers and stay safe.✌

My trainer from pam taught me to look at the skyview from google to scope out the area ahead of time to get a mental picture in my mind before i even arrive there. It helps little bit, but sometimes I have more space than what it shows from the skyview. Still helps to look it up before you go.

Yeah, I second a comment below about worrying about other drivers. The first thing I noticed when taking 30 tries to get into a dock is... that even when theire in the front seat, they aren't even paying attention to you. Even if they are you provided them some well needed entertainment, or reminded them of their beginnings. Take your time and just keep truckin'

I come from farming, been driving tractors, trucks, machinery etc. since I was 8, and I feel like Im good at it. With my own car, I havent had an accident since I was 18, 25 years ago. But backing with a truck trailer is just a different animal. Places changes all the time, room can be tight, and the space you may think you have on the blind side, is not always there. That took me a couple smaller accidents to learn to get out of the truck. I drive different trucks, different trailers, long hauls, city, construction sites etc. Every day is different pretty much. Been driving for 10 months now, I thought driving vehicles was my thing, so I didnt have to go out and look. I learned to get out the hard way, so to other new drivers, know it takes time, and theres no shame in going slow and stepping out and look. The guy next to you may not, but he may also have backed to the same spot at the same place a thousand times.

Don't get discouraged even experienced drivers use pull ups s and get frustrated in tight backing especially at docks and if you're tandems are slid all the way to the rear you have to give yourself even more space because it takes longer for the trailer to start turning the biggest thing I could tell everyone is to get out and look especially at truck stops

Can not understate the importance of GOAL. I'm on my fourth day on the job (and already down for maintenance, friggin 2023's man...) I have been doing GOAL at every back, having a hard time getting it in, and looking silly the whole time. But the only thing worse than looking silly is looking silly and hitting somebody's truck. Ignore everybody else around, you do what _you_ need to do.
@Bendigo1
@Bendigo1 2 года назад
Something that should be mentioned, if you have the tadems forward, you do not want to be closer than 4 feet from the trailers or building beside you. Tail swing will potentially hit anything beside you if you are too close and turn to sharp. Also, if there is room, starting at a 45° angle increases visibility of what is behind the tractor in the swing. A 90 degree back should only be used if there is no room to set up for a 45°. The way this was demonstrated was well done. I just thought I would add my opinion for what it is worth. It bothers me to see drivers to 90 degree backs when there is more than enough room to do a 45 or even straight back, all it does is flat spot the tires and tear up the gravel or pavement.

I am sorry I am alittle confused, don't you need more room for a 90° angle, because once the tractor and trailer get straight into the whole it will be needing a lot of room.
@Bendigo1
@Bendigo1 2 года назад
@@richardr2362 it depends on where and how it is done. Technically, they all need the same amount of room, because the size of the truck is the same, what changes is where the room is needed. There are very few reasons to need to do a 90° back. But in most cases a 90° back needs just as much, if not more foom in front of a spot to back into if the tractor is going to be straight when parked.

Limited forward space isn't a problem, if so, then your company sent you to somewhere you should never have a sleeper. The real problem is a narrow space where you have to wait longer driving straight before you cut to set up your trailer. It gets more fun in a day cab with the "blind siding" (back windows help that).

For those who are really new, just understand, the goal is to set yourself up, in so that the final back up “game” is as simple as possible. He could’ve set himself up for the final position in a different way. Personally, I would’ve preferred to drive up and then reverse slowly and get a feel for how it’s falling in place instead of knife jacking in that small frame like they did. Again, the goal is to set yourself up for the inevitable backup game. The more experience, the better you measure and understand it.

While technically correct , in real world and busy wearhouse any driver should be able to back in under 2 min. Otherwise you'll hold back 20 other trucks . of course it takes time to get good at this , I'm at my 35th year of OTR and I remember how stressful it was trying to backup while 10 other trucks are waiting to pass by . So practice on your free time if you see a empty lot and in time it will become second nature. You'll run in to some odd parking spots from time to time . specially if you run east coast or older city's like Philadelphia , Pittsburgh or even Chicago .most of these wearhouse were built in 50s and 60s way before we had 53 foot trailers and they could be challenging even for experience drivers. Good luck to you all

I’ve been driving for like 7 months and I’m so used to backing the trailer that I mix up lefts and rights sometimes lol. But the reason the trailer goes opposite of the direction u point the steering whee is due to the 5th wheel/ kingpin pivot motion. So when ur turning the wheel to the right, ur making the truck go to the right, but because of the 5th wheel, this causes the kingpin to push the trailer to the opposite direction like a pivot point

This isn't possible if there were obstacles in front of the other truck because you can't pull forward. You guys should've haf another truck parked in front of that other trailer it would've been a better example

Honking your big horn is a great way to disturb everyone trying to sleep in the yard. Hazard lights is the best way to get drivers and people attention. Unless your at a place that requires you to always have them on. Then they are pointless and are like the boy who cried wolf. Trains people not to pay attention. Still good video.

Would love to see a Driver using Drones to aid in Blind Spots. Because of the risk of getting out while checking, thieves could GTA your rig, unless you lock it, but then again windows can be broken. Solution: transparent aluminum, (Aluminium oxynitride aka ALON).

I thought about that but the instructor did say to turn off the truck. Drone would be a good idea. I have one that I use with a 10 Inch tablet. Send it up overhead and you're golden 😁

Does this setup work with all tandem settings or do they specifically have to be in the back

Your set up will be different every back. No back is going to be exactly the same in real world applications.

Yes, however your trailer moves differently with your tandems are slid up or all the way back

The actual Schneider drivers take 50 tries at the truck stop, get mad and pull out make a lap around and try again 50 more times then get mad and leaves.

This video is to discourage people from getting into the business . without much money 1- get a cheap truck. Do local load . Remember is an old truck 2- rent a trailer 950 pcm 3 - fact the load . Get money in 4- put a salary for your truck and pay him every week with parts 5- every week take 2 days of and put something new on your truck One airbag or a hose .and if you don’t run with bad luck and get a engine or transmission failure you will be fine . Remember 1 - bills 2- tax 3 - parts 4- savings for upgrade and maintain you equipment 5 - you income .

Okee i don't get it, the us is such a big country why use so little room. Here in the netherlands we have more room. I used to drive with waterpipes en stuf like that, we had to go to living streets and those are small here. Often went to amsterdam. But with backing up, you really need to work. Steering left en right en pushing that trailer to a gap. If you do it so slow as here, you indeed need to pull up, but when he turned right and than straight,right again so forward, the angel is a lot less en because you do that you automaticly get more room where the other truck is. Everyone does it its own way, experiment on that what will work best for you. PS. Sorry for the typos am a dutchtrucker not a whriter 😂. Have a nice day ya'll👋

U don't always have that much space. 90° all the way.... 45° doesn't always work....
