Let us know what basing scheme we should cover next please! - Paints Used in a 1 click bundle: elementgames.co.uk/artis-opus-limestone-basing Doombull Brown Skrag Brown Zandri Dust Morghast Bone Screaming Skull Any white (Any black)
I really like the look of this. And it’s a really nice video tutorial! What citadel paints would you use for basically the same but in cold base colour? Like black or dark grey ashe world?
This is very quickly becoming my favourite hobby channel on RU-vid. Love that you cover all aspects of painting by doing more than just the actual model, but scenery, bases and weathering too! Things I'd like to see you cover next are camo patterns (I know I say this one all the time) but then also maybe some metallics. I'd love to see you tackle some of the new Necron models and cover some silver and brass schemes using Series D.
Again a very simple but very effective tutorial, like others have said this is becoming one of my go too channels for tips, guides and inspiration to keep me motivated in the hobby, thanks again and keep the vids coming.
I think the real topic here is not the base and color recipe itself but how painting minis isn't one direction straight but a back and forth process: bringing your hues back after highlights using focused glazes then pushing extreme lights here and there. Wet blending for dummies, etc. The fact it's "just" a base makes using these advanced techniques look more like a natural progression than intimidating prone-to-fail stuff. Still not sold on videos length but even being "above" the need of watching basing videos, I never regret spending my time watching these. I'd love to watch your take on more complex subjects (intermediate and advanced) or insightful out of the blue stuff like that purple/green neon wall, the smoothly stippled vehicles...
Hey Javier, sure I replied to this, so apologies if something has bugged and you get two! We're still working on timing, this is actually an older video that we had in the bank, hopefully the more recent ones have felt less baggy? You should get a kick out of our 10k subs video, watch this space! :)
Amazing Jono, I really love how this style offsets minis, it doesn't interrupt many paint schemes and is fairly universal, it also takes adaptions and customisations/alterations really nicely!
As always: Great video. Can’t get enough of it! When it comes to basing I would be interested in lava bases and icy/snowy bases. Thanks for the excellent content!
Any interest in doing an Obsidian and Lava base? Also, love seeing these new vids pop up in my feed! Video quality and sound is great, and the contents are practical. I hope every wargamer watching is sharing these with their friends!
Absolutely fantastic tutorial! I really enjoy your approach which is similar to my own but at a much high level of skill. You are really helping me step up my painting. Thank you.
Brilliant video! Watching the base evolve into the finished product was amazing. You may already have a video, or series of videos out there, but I would like to see some best/recommended uses for the various Artis Opus accessories (dry brush pallet, dampening pad, how best to clean and care for your brushes, etc.). I absolutely love my Artis Opus brushes and since I’m in the States it takes awhile for replacement brushes to get to me. I want to make sure I make my brushes last as long as possible. Thanks for all the great videos!
Hey Andrew, thanks so much for the kind comments, mate! We've got a couple of products pending which're waiting on for doing a comprehensive break down like this, it's 100% planned :)
Another great simple tutorial how about a series on basing you've done a few all ready so making it a set but there are the industrial bases and then the likes of snow/winter themed marshes etc...
Sounds good! It's been added on the list already. We'll definitely build up to having basing playlists and a wider variety in the future! Thanks so much for the support mate😊
This could not have come at a better time, just when I was thinking about basing my own models! This has given me plenty of ideas! Also, I would like to see how you would tackle an urban base, I have seen plenty just painted to look like concrete or tarmac but those just look boring, so I would be interested to see how you would go about making those more interesting!
I agree that the black base rim is the only way to go :) It would be interesting to see how you built that base. Why and how you used the green stuff that seems to be poking from beneath the sand at the beginning.
I can absolutely do this at some point in the future, GS cuts nicely before it is dried, and doesn't crack, plus is sticky enough to hold slate/props/details nicely at any angle, it also drills beautifully, for pinning, as well as giving you bottom-heavy minis for gaming!
Hi Jason, highland and mountain are my go-to, from AP, but I've been shifting around testing Gamers Grass and GSWorld too recently, here's the AP ones: elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery-by-manufacturer/the-army-painter/basing-and-accessories?d=10051
Love the system and the final look ! great job ! Could You show us how to paint some scales , like Mawkrusha or some Throggots ? I bet You could achive great and intresting results !
Yeah, I usually feel like that about Artis Opus videos. I like the content but footage should be cut or speed up a notch. These days people want it all and want it now, so I guess some would bounce off the bandwagon just to spend 10 minutes on a whole mini + base video. I'm tempted most of the times...
Thanks for the tips guys! We do agree on this! This is actually an older video, hopefully you've noticed our recent ones are being more aggressively cut😊 We're constantly working on improving the videos, in terms of speed and quality.
@@ArtisOpus I do appreciate it indeed. I know there are algorithms to please doing this or that so the vid can stand out from the crowd but (and maybe I'm wrong) internet doesn't work line TV. IMHO contents (hobby-wise) are meant to be played multiple times, like in 6months you have a bunch of SW stormtroopers and you think "Byron's did a good job painting white a while ago" and you check back some parts no as much as a lesson or entertainment which may be the 1st time watching the video but like a instructional reference. I know I might be dead wrong here, but at least I feel it's worth considering. The 3 white shields in 1 video has the standard AO's length but thrice the contents so in my book that one was awesome 😊
Cheers! You'd be surprised Devin, it barely picks up paint, and when it does it doesn't come off, you can flip it over and use the other side also, the most important thing is to let it dry fully every so often so you don't promote it festering :). We also sell replacements, but they're not needed nearly as regularly as you'd think.
Hey dude, you can wash whenever you like really - one thing to note is that premade washes often finish satin, and I wanted the base to look natural and Dry AF, so I avoided them - you can always mix wash + water (/medium) + paint to get a hybrid effect
I have a question about the textured palette( I got the set, xl D brush and the texture palette in the mail this week, very happy with it and looking forward on using it); you mentioned repriming in some vids. what do you mean with re prime ? ; priming the texture pad with a spray primer or ? wouldn't the primer flake of during time and usage or ?
Lovely base colours, gives off a great Mediterranean vibe that would look great on some Ultramarines I thinking of painting up. For the details section, do you have any particular flock/tufts brands or makes you'd recommend to finish this base off? I'll need to pick so up so would love to know if you had any recommendations for good ones. Edit: Also keep up the great content, this is rapidly becoming one of my favourite hobby channels that I've recently subscribed too!
Hey dude, sorry for the delay! Yeah absolutely, I was thinking of Greece when I worked it out! :) Highland and Mountain tufts are my go-to, but there's a lot of fantastic options out there!
I am always wondering how people tend not wash their brush for each color - while on the wet pallete, oh well, but straight from the pot? How does that not contaminate the colors?
You're completely right, I just go real fast and don't mind small percentages of similar colours mixed in with each other. I'd never dip my red brush in a white paint though😊
I think I shall be doing this for my lumineth basing. Could you do a video on batch/speed painting marines to a high tabletop standard using your dry brush approach? Suggested chapter...space wolves!😋
Hi James, sounds perfect dude! Mhhmmm, I think I absolutely could, I'd have to pick the right chapter, we've been debating doing a 'how much can I paint in 24 hours?' video, perhaps this'd be a good idea for it... This is going to kill me 😂
Artis Opus lol that’s pretty hardcore, similar to Miniac, goobertown and midwinter. I think miniac got to about 30+ hours. Might get a bit hysterical by that point, it would be interesting to see the difference in quality between first and last mini painted.
this is a really specific request but could you do a tutorial on ice rock or stones if you look at the iron priest or Logan grimnar for the space wolves that sort of thing ive struggled with it and ive seen squidmar do a glazed blue could i achive this effect with stippling if so how cause i cant find any videos on this let a lone d sires ones.
Absolutely dude, ice has been requested quite a lot. If you're looking to do grey stones you can follow our Dungeon wall tutorial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XlgG7A-W6bo.html
Dat dud is right: most people misunderstands dry brushing by rubbing actually dried out paint into minis. It needs a degree of moisture, that's why he uses the damping pad, he keeps the brush "fresh" without letting it suck water into the belly. IMHO the key is to use soft brushes like the D series (makeup ones will do too), keep them from being 100% dry and leave the slightest amount of paint on them. There's tricks like rubbing graphite with your finger or use darker metallics and then edge highlight with a pencil so you get different degrees of shine in you metals. Glazed are always adviced too 😊
Any chance your store could remove VAT for people outside the uk/Europe? Would go a long way towards paying for tracked shipping and mean that I don't get double taxed.
Just lightly glue one foot to a temporary base buddy, snap it off when done, stick to fancy base. It's how I have painted all of my armies, saves a huge amount of time, I have a bunch of old painty bases I reuse (I use small ones, it helps me reach the minis legs, and feet, etc
Thank you! 100% YES, it's tried and tested. I've used the exact same colours from the ghost wall to paint up Nighthound. Use a smaller brush and go a little slower and more carefully and you'll achieve amazing results😊
My only issue with this video was it just says it is a basing tutorial when really it is a tutorial specifically on painting bases. Ended up here because I am trying to learn how to do bases for the first time so I don't know how to get to the very starting point before you even started painting.
Good to hear! Thank you for the support😊 Great question by the way, you absolutely CAN. I'd recommend starting with our large and shifting to a medium for highlights.
We've been asked a couple of times for the building method Ben, we primarily focus on painting, however perhaps in the next tutorial we can do an extra bit showing the work beforehand :).
very nice. just about to start a Raptors Primaris Marine army going to give this a try for my test figure. I could make the Olive green armor look really nice.
I actually just did my first real stab at a base today. This is so cool to see. Attaching the mini is a bit of an issue for me. Had two super glues fail, so I made a sort of anchor for the foot with a drill, some sprue plastic, and plastic glue. Seems to work, but can you recommend any more elegant solutions?
So along the lines of idea video’s I was putting a bigature (big min in my case a large demon but also apply to vehicles) and I always have the bits to build and glue and there are the bits you know need to painted separately and then glue. It could be a good video to discuss a series of mini’s and what to paint separately when you going to used the series D techniques. And maybe some tricks if you find yourself with your light source out once ensembles as I know that is something I’ve srufffed up if I’m not look at the rest of the figure at the same time. I guess it would be a bit talky face and a discussion on light in a more general sense but practical examples assuming you have a decent pile of shame could be really useful....now I’ve written it I’m not sure if is a good idea or not, to me the big appeal of an airbrush is getting directional highlights is super easy and the series D allows this also
This video has gotten me thinking about my basing for my White Scars army. I had originally planned on using Vallejo Earth Pasting paste with some brown wash with a dry brush, but this has me reconsidering the amount of dry brushing... mebee add some rocks for a chunkier base. Thanks for sharing
I use Vallejo's pastes along with Kitty litter for bigger rocks. Kinda slap grey into the rock while brown is still fresh so it wet blends then dry brush everything with a yellow white (ice yellow, hikey yellow, maybe ivory...). I personally wash everything with pigment powders to matt down and bring everything together, then snipe some extreme highlights.
