Interesting stuff. Now that I've played some games as a D, all this makes perfect sense, especially because I'm inclined to be offensive. Will use this in future.

This is one of the best videos to review with a 10u burgeoning defenseman. Many kids who fancy themselves "offensive defensemen" really do think that means handling the puck in dangerous areas and rushing the puck end to end. This video effectively debunks that myth and should be used as a tool to help ground your defensemen in their primary responsibilities.

I just don't understand why one should give up the chance to go end to end, if the potential is there. The real issue is about whether forwards are ready to put themselves in the defensive role, when it's necessary to cover for a good chance created by a defenseman. I went end to end in my last game....and it would have been stupid of me to pass off when the situation begged that i keep moving towards the slot before shooting and also pushing for the rebound. Making a useless pass just to move back to defense...is NOT good hockey. Bobby Orr changed all that...and one should not forget that in the obsession about defining roles. We need thinking players...and players with flexible minds...and not robots.

If you have the potential to rush the puck....I say...rush it! A good team covers for it's rushing defense. If I'm in a rush...and I see the chance to get involved in a 2 on 1, I don't hesitate. Rushing defensemen can often create those plays....as rushing with 3 forwards and a defense so often overwhelms a team's defense. Just have to be careful not to cough up the puck when hitting the neutral zone or the other team's blue line. The lagging forward should be covering for the rushing defenseman, if the play goes wrong. That's real teamwork. When i see it, I'll shout it from the bench, to make sure that forwards ensure they are covering for that defenseman.

Nothing wrong with rushing the puck but you don't want to skate past an open player. They'll need to slow down, you'll go in without support. If you don't have an open player to head man the puck to or if you have players skating up the ice with. you and have room, keep going! The point is, you don't need to skate the puck to be offensive, there are a lot of other ways, and I see too many good defenseman get shut down trying to rush it all the time instead of head man passing and following up the rush.
