My notes: "Your Anxiety is Telling You the Truth." - Anxiety is related to freedom, drawing from Kierkegaard's concept of anxiety as the dizziness of freedom, how freedom requires making choices and imposing limitations on oneself. - The metaphysical aspects of freedom and the experience of looking into the abyss of one's own potential explore the paradoxical nature of freedom, where true freedom is accessed by self-imposed restrictions and limitations. - Examples of creative expressions, such as music and writing, are used to illustrate the concept of self-imposed limitations leading to artistic success. - Individuals often realize that once they have complete freedom, they lose the essence of their powers and creative abilities. - Jack White's music highlights the importance of creating limitations and small rooms for creativity. - The paradox of freedom is that it is accessed indirectly, requiring limitations. Lacan and Freud - Lacanian theory suggests that anxiety is a mode of truth and arises when we get what we want. - Lacan argues that desire is insurmountable and essential to our sense of self. - Freud's theory of anxiety revolves around fear of separation from the object of desire. - Lacan radicalizes Freud by emphasizing the desire to fight the symbolic father instead of being with the mother. - Idealism (naive, critical, self-reflective) and materialism are contrasting philosophical approaches. - Hegelian speculative idealism upends the previous idealist approaches. Kant and Christians - Kantian self-reflective idealism suggests that truth is mediated through conceptual reason. - Some Christians talk about the freedom they find in being Christian, seeing Christianity as liberating. - GK Chesterton describes Christianity as an armor that restricts movement but underneath it is unmitigated joy and freedom. - The crucifixion is seen as liberating people from having to do as God wants. - In Kantian ethics, the anxiety of existence arises from not knowing what God wants, and belief requires acting as if one knows. - Idealism upholds the idea of a master in the sky, while materialism transposes this relationship into the world of appearances. Psychoanalysis - In psychoanalysis, the psychoanalyst does not act as a master but as a barrier to communion, allowing the individual to find autonomy and freedom. - Paying the psychoanalyst is precisely to pay them not to care or appease, but to provide a space for open expression. - Some people seek substitute father figures in thinkers or public figures, desiring a master who allows them to feel a sense of liberation. - The psychoanalyst does not give rules or tell people what to do but emphasizes personal responsibility and freedom. - Impressionism introduced negation and abstraction into art, challenging the traditional depiction of objects and subjects. - The true master is the one who acts so freely that others recognize their own freedom. One piece :v - Luffy from the manga series "One Piece" exemplifies the Hegelian master, setting others free through his absolute freedom and indifference to societal norms. - Freedom is contagious, and when we act autonomously and freely, we inspire others to do the same. - Freedom is not about being better or more successful than others but about doing something that sets others free. - Embracing the futility of freedom and doing things for their own sake could somehow brings fulfillment.

For me this is one of the best lectures I've ever had, I find your passion, knowledge and capacity to mix different concepts in a very interesting and enjoyable adventure, through a jungle of really difficult topics, to be just amazing. And I've just learnt one thing: your not a Master.

Another real good (and short) Anime, which depicts this hegelian Master is 'Blue Period'. In this Anime the protagonist Yamato decides to chease a life as a Painter and tries everything to be able to study in the university in Tokio (Geidai). Although the chances to pass the entrance exam are extremly low (below 1%) he still pursues his dream and while he is doing it, the people around him get inspired by his dedication (without him even noticing it) It is a really good Anime which I would highly recommend^^ I really liked your lectures Julien! You are helping me alot because I am struggling with my life right now and your Videos a one of the very few things that brings me joy.

Loved the lecture, the ending especially resonated with me. I’ve long held a similar belief, inspired by Daoism, that I put into a short phrase: one cannot blunt a pointless object. But my comment is really interested in Christ and the law. I don’t think he means to set us on our own paths or to abolish the law, as it says he has come to fulfill the law. However, I do think he presents a radical transformation regarding the law. When asked what the greatest commandment is, Christ distills the Ten Commandments into two: love the Lord and love your neighbors. This does not undercut the law, it underpins the law. For really, love is the basis, not a replacement, of every commandment. And every commandment shows us the conduct of love. We should not see instruction as a burden to carry, that burden has been lifted by Christ. Instead we should delight in the law, it should be written on our hearts. God’s statues should not repel us, they should nourish us - even in their difficulty; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. The terribly hard part is really this: to enjoy the Lord and his law, you must die - so that you may be raised up with Christ. So that the spirit would intercede on your behalf and grant you a new heart that does not detest the Lord in its own unrighteousness, but a heart that enjoys him fully. But even with this difference in reading, I think we can arrive at the same place if we focus on the operation of love, especially as it is demonstrated by Christ: Loving to demonstrate that he is loving, and by extension, to demonstrate his glory through the depth of his love in the crucifixion Bit ranty but was very motivated to comment having witnessed your energy. Thanks for the great lecture 🙏

I am accustomed to listening to lecture as much as possible but for a while I did not. I listen to this yesterday and now today again and I am grateful for your calm demeanour yet deep philosophical take. The irony is that you are sharing more than creating...kinda reflecting a light you found....not saying your *Enlighted* just saying we are damn lucky for your videos.

For me. I feel like dejavu like i know all this in before hand. Like ive learnd all these smaller parts before. But now, julian merged the thoughts together and built a castle from it. I now have a question for you all. I had this question. about freedom, even before going into this video. Still the question I had, remains unawnserd: what is a free action if all my actions are enforced on me. My thought is that there is no free actions since im forced to take action even not to do action which is a action in itself(enforced by the world like rules or anything within the world). My hypothesis is that its impossible to be free in this sence.

Thank you for your lecture. I find this speech perfect for stressed white metropolitan medium class who use to go to analysis, but how to find happiness everywhere around you, doing these tiny activities without reward, enjoying the symptom, if you are a kid soldier in Congo, a slaved worker in Bangladesh or a Palestinian in Gaza? Or are you trying to say that even in these conditions humans can be happy if they just learn how to manage their own coflict blahblahblah? I think that tactical trascendental ideals are necessary, as well as paternal metaphors, in order to mobilise some historically determined social and political actions. Thank you again.

Julian it's so funny I had the same Gameboy experience haha. Till the part you got rid of it. I went on a spree on the other hand. Same thing with coca cola. Couldn't drink it growing up due to family restricting me, when I grew up I ended drinking a liter and a half per day for two years .. I guess I'm an anomaly on that part haha

Julian, I listen to both Why Theory and Psyche Podcast and think to myself, often, how nice it'd be to hear u speak with Todd McGowan, Ryan Engley, QuiQue Autrey--even, say, Richard Boothby or Petter Rollins, Rouselle, Craig (from Acid Horizon), Doug Lain (from Diet Soap), Julie Reshe. Do you ever have contact with anyone like this to talk philosophy/Lacan/Ziziek and so on? I'd love to hear it--or even arrange it in some way (however that'd be possible...)
