In "Sinister" we follow a true-crime writer who investigates the killing of a family and the disappearance of their youngest daughter. In order to write the book effectively, he moves into the house where the murders happened. But things get increasingly weird when he finds a box of snuff films that contain the answers he’s been looking for. In this video we'll review what happens in the story and how to beat Bughuul.

Sinister is not the scariest movie, it's not the most gorey, it's not the craziest. But, for some reason, I find it so unsettling. I think this is a movie I will never forget and every time I watch it I go away with a feeling of uncertainty.

Sinister is a good case of less is more. I liked how they played up the mystery angle in this movie. Throughout most of the first two acts we don't know if it is a supernatural horror or natural horror building up the horror more.

Its the balance between gore, scary and unsettling that makes it so good. And also how the horror movie is also a mystery movie, but it doesn't reveal a lot of the mystery so the viewer can't just find out how to survive for 100% certainty (i.e. going to stay at a hotel might count as moving from the demons perspective, etc.)

A lot of the kills are really matter of fact and not overly flashy. Like the throat slit kill terrified me a lot even when I watched it on Found Flix's video when he didn't play the audio for that scene. I have seen many throat slit kills in other movies but this one scared me the most.

This is why I love Sinister. Ellison is a genuinely smart person, but it’s his ego and his stubbornness that ends up putting himself and his family at risk. He’s not a bad guy, but his selfishness gets the better of him. By the time he’s realised his mistakes it’s already too late.
@neldormiveglia1312

Also, the police wouldn't have done much to help the situation. They would've been very involved with analyzing the tapes etc, but they wouldn't give a fuck about the paranormal nature of some of the things that happen. Most likely, the outcome would've been similar bc Ellison would've most certainly continued with his side investigation, keeping (as the professor explained) the portal between Mr Boogie's reality and real life wide open. It would've been a bit risqué for Boogie to kill the family once the police are already under suspicion of what they consider a serial killer, but who knows. Edit: also, the age of the suspect would have to be somewhere around... 60 yo minimum. The movie happens in 2012, and the first tape we know of happens in 1966 (I think) which means the suspect has sporadically been active for at least 46y. Assuming he was young when he started, let's say he was 20, he would need to be like 66 or something... And I'm not expert but it's difficult to expect such level of detail in a killer's modus operandi in his first try. The first tape implied there was already a good amount of experience behind. The time doesn't make sense for a single human to have done it.

Most ghost movie plots revolve around stopping the bad entity. Here we see the protagonist trying to physically flee and rid the memories of the past to no avail. There’s just something about not being able to get away or defeat the bad entity makes it and the scenes around it that much more eerie. EDIT: Not to mention the fact that the entity resembles a human. Like my grandma said, it’s not the ghost you have to watch out for.

@FoggyFiend13
@FoggyFiend13 3 года назад
@@kozobrody1240 I have this feeling that the reason why all the families moved out was due to possible disturbances from Bughuul and the ghost children haunting the family and driving them out of the house because they get easily scared. That’s what happens to Ellison, Bughuul terrorizes him and sends him into a downward spiral so his initial thought is to move and that placed him into position for Bughuul’s plan to work. SPOILERS FOR SINISTER 2 In Sinister 2, Courtney (who had no knowledge of what was going on with Bughuul or her kids) and her two twin sons are forced out of the house by their abusive patriarch, but you can see in that film that the children are terrorized too because Dylan was the target of manipulation by the ghost children in order to corrupt him to join their ranks, when he chose to stray away from that path then the ghost kids turned the tables on him and mentioned how the tapes weren’t meant for him but instead his brother. That set up for Dylan and his family to die, but Deputy So and So saved them and that allowed Bughuul to come after So and So due to the breaking of his cycle of snuff films at the end of the movie (it ended on a cliffhanger).

Going off the first movie alone, ironically, Bughuul uses fear to kill his victims, by terrifying them into leaving the house and then making the child kill their family. He essentially punishes you for being afraid of him. However, if you take that fear a step further into full-on paranoia and take excessive measures to protect yourself, what is he gonna do? He operates through tiny children, what are they gonna do against an adult who seemingly jumps at anything? On another note, this pattern makes it seem like he’s dependent on whatever home the family moves into. If a house is burned down or demolished, what’s he gonna do? If he can just move houses, why would he not just increase the frequency of his attacks to more than once every few years, he could kill way faster, yet he doesn’t. If a family is murdered, the house becomes vacant, then he has no child left to possess until one actually moves in. If that house is demolished or say gets burned down in a forest fire or something, Bughuul is fucked. And what if a family doesn’t even move in? What if the house is just bought and owned by childless families? what if a family where all the children are grown up moves in? Either Bughuul is severely limiting himself for no reason or he isn’t very unbeatable at all.

No but the second movie ruined that. Apparently the taken children can touch and move physical objects in the real world so even if your child is helpless by themselves, the other kids would help them. I'm sure two or three adults wouldn't be stronger than a dozen kids. If they couldn't affect the physical environment then your method works. Just don't drink anything that your children give you, regardless of which child you think has been affected. And maybe sleeping pills so they don't get up and go to see the videos at night.
@dartigens10
@dartigens10 11 месяцев назад
In the sequel, the main character was trying to break the curse chain by burning down the houses that had been inhabited by families that were murdered... except, it turned out one of them that he thought was empty already had a family in it. (It also looks like there are multiple chains of affected houses, and it might not just be videos.) It's not clear though if rebuilding on the same site might be a problem. Based on how much effort Bughuul makes to force families to move, I'd wager that even if a couple who can't have children and have no plans to adopt etc moved in, he'd find a way to foist some kids on them. Like, some homeless kids would turn up on the doorstep, or a relative's kids would need to stay with them or something. (After all, there's no reason to think that those kids have to be the couple's biological children, or even related to them at all. So far it looks like there needs to be at least two kids, but that might not even be a hard rule.) I don't think something like 'parents move, kids stay put' or etc would work either, because I would think in that situation Bughuul would just start scaring whoever's been left behind into leaving.

I think the reason for the whole ritual of the kids killing their family is not so Baghoul can kill them, but so he can take them into his world. The tapes probably brought him into this world enough to kill the child in revenge if the ritual is interrupted but he can't actually take them with him as a snack for later. The professor mentions that he lives inside visual mediums and since we know from the sequel that the chosen child watches all the previous home movies those viewings are perhaps what is needed to bring him into our world. After all, Baghoul is seen in all the movies and we see him move on Ethan Hawkes screen indicating that he is indeed living in those images.

Sinister, if you just read about it, seems like you ordinary horror-evening-with-friends-movie. But the one thing that makes the movie so unsettling, so brutal (and to this day one of the best horror flicks I have seen, and I have seen a lot)...is the music. Combined with the low-res imagery of the snuff movies, the overall tone of kids beeing involved...its astonishing. The soundtrack is so brutal without kicking your head in with guitars or chuggs. It is the perfect embodiment of combinging music with visuals to create something unique.

Then once the ghostbusters get there they slime the youngest possessed child with positively charged ectpplasm and they proceed to capture begul or booghul. Then once booghul has a new home in the containment unit everyone lives. 😊

Reminds me of The Grudge movies where it's like there's a haunted house being bought repeatedly instead of being torn down. Because of this, the family that moves into the house suffers a horrific fate with the demon that lives within. Also reminds me of Get Out in some ways. As you point out, there are multiple instances where as the audience you think Ellison's best move is to "Get out" before it's too late... But then too late happens and all hell breaks loose
