On a busy weekend at the park we give you some tips for how to beat the queues at Alton Towers no matter what year it is! Check the full description for even more Alton Towers tips!
Alton Towers Oktoberfest is in full swing and just over 4 hours in the park had us in double figures for how many rides we had been on and we'd already finished the big 6 challenge. Our goal was to only do the big 6 but we had time to fit others in along the way too.
With the park being open until 8pm during Oktoberfest Fri-Sun there was plenty more time to rack up those ride totals.
We hope these Alton Towers tips will help and whilst this weekend was certainly not as busy as Alton Towers Scarefest for example it's still fairly easy enough to get the big 6 done in one day (even on the busiest days) as we have done all of the 70+ times we've been to the park over the last few years.
Other Alton Towers Top Tips
1. Forbidden Valley and Dark Forest are usually dead within the last hour of the parks opening times. Use this to your advantage and rack up some extra laps!
2. During lunch hours the queues are usually smaller on Smiler / Wicker Man so take advantage of this and have your lunch early or late or even within the queue line as stated in the video.
3. Flat rides such as Marauders Mayhem, Blade and Battle Galleons always have short queues. Make the most of them.
4. Fast shots are currently available for £10 for Wicker Man, The Smiler and Nemesis and crazy queue times will be a thing of the past. When fast track bundles return in 2021 it's certainly worth the money if you want to get the most out of your day. Ideally suited to first time visitors at the park or just impatient people who hate queues like myself.
5. Make sure you have the Alton Towers app installed on your phone to keep track of queue times and other handy functions.

My tip is to stay as long as possible and get on all the rides. Go one your favourites more than once. When the park ‘Closes’ jump in a queue for your favourite. Because the queue closes. Not the ride

I'm quite lucky I get a disabled pass and i always feel quite guilty walking past people, especially on the smiler when everyone is pushed into the tiny cages like animals. We always manage to get on the big rides luckily. I also was quite naughty and when i visited the park a year or two ago there was a child crying because his dad wasn't willing to queue for wicker man as it had just opened. He was heart broken bless him and we even had a little wicker man hat on so he clearly loved the ride, i approached him and asked if he wanted to "skip" the queue with me (due to my disabled pass and the fact that it was only me and my friend and we're allowed two extra people). I know it was rubbish on the rest of the people in the park but i couldn't see that little boy so upset. He got off smiling and his dad offered to buy us lunch which i denied. I felt good for the rest of the day then!

Hey! Thanks for commenting. I always feel that same guilt when I get a fast pass, I can't stand queuing as i'm sure you can tell, hence making the video in the first place but unfortunately you just can't avoid it in some cases. I'd say that's a solid choice too, basically any area of the park that's away from the inner circle (Wicker Man, Spinball and X-Sector at a push) is usually quiet in the morning. With us getting through the rides so quickly we hit the afternoon stall on Dark Forest, usually an hour before the park closes its always deserted and we'd usually wait until then but we were so ahead of the curve that the extra wait didn't seem too bad considering the longest queue we'd been in up until that point was 20 minutes for Wicker Man which on a weekend of a brand new event (Oktoberfest) is not too bad. Thanks for watching! Sean

The best way to go is left. Nobody ever goes left first, so if you're going at opening - 9ish, go left. It doesn't work after a few hours since everyone is coming back around, but it's good for things like school trips. Also, ALWAYS GO IN THE SINGLE RIDER QUEUE. Although some of you and your friends might be a little separated, most rides will have enough seats to sit next to eachother. I'd also recommend going on a few rides before going on things like Smiler or Oblivion. Galactica and Nemesis don't really have long queues most of the time, so going on those might cut down the time a bit, even for the single rider queue.

Some of this is similar to what I do and thinks along the same lines. The main rule is, think about what everyone else is doing. Most people will be used to having lunch at lunch time, dinner at dinner time, ride the rides in the order they pass them and avoid having to add extra walking to their route. You also need to have a sacrifice area, where you accept you'll be queueing when the park is at its busiest. So with that in mind I would suggest: Dark forest first, far enough away from the entrance to not get busy in the first half hour and should be done before Forbidden Valley as that doesn't get busy until mid day. 1. Rita (as most people walk in to DF from fountain Square so it gets busier earlier) 2. Thirteen. Take the lakeside walk or the conservatory garden walk to Forbidden Valley. 3. Galactica (Low throughput and has longer queues that Nemesis so do this first) 4. Multiple rides on Nemesis until a queue forms. Lunch before 12. Lakeside walk to X Sector whilst most visitors are now in the park and those in early start to go for lunch. 5. Oblivion 6. The Smiler (will probably be first big queue, try to hit in the middle of lunch time and after most the morning crowds have now gone past it) 7. Spinball (Most guests would have already ridden on the way in). 7. Wickerman (will be the biggest queue of the day). 8. Hex. Then head to Katanga and Gloomy Wood and knock those 3 on the head. Then you can either choose re rides of your choice, pick up family attractions or Dungeons. Ensure you spend the end of your day in Forbidden Valley and as far away from Mutiny Bay and X sector as possible, whatever you do. It's always dead in FV the last hour of the day and you'll get tonnes of Nemesis rerides. The Galactica gate usually opens at closing time saving you the walk from the entrance all the way back to the cat park. If you really hate queues, final tip is (not during Covid obviously), have a drink in one of the hotels before heading off (non alcoholic if driving of course). The car park will empty out, you won't be queuing to get out, Alton Village will be a clear run through and the Uttoxer McDonald's queue will also have gone. Job done.
@LiftHillsandThrills
@LiftHillsandThrills 3 года назад
There's some great advice in there Matt thanks for that! We always choose FV first because well.. DF for me isn't really worth doing at all, there's just something about it that doesn't sit well with me currently, just two poor Intamin rides that don't seem to hook me in like they should. I did a write-up that stated that this video was naturally bias to my own ride tastes hence the journey to FV over DF but both routes we take always seem to have a good outcome of reaching double figures on rides regardless of how busy the park is! The reason Rita has an enormous queue is because it has a small ride capacity and it doesn’t get through a large amount of people per hour. Also, thirteen is the most busy ride in the park(as soon as wicker man calms down) because it attracts smaller kids and families.

I made a spreadsheet to work out the best time to ride everything. We’d get to the park at 9:10, then get straight to smilier by 9:30 (as walking through the gardens hotel route) Would get into the ride building and onto the ride by 10:30 Meaning we only queued for 60 mins Which is the shortest length that the smiler would ever be in average Then walk onto oblivion, then straight to dark forest, do 13 first then Rita. You do these straight away as they can fetch Upto 120 minutes, but at this time of the day 11:30, the queue is still short as people haven’t got there yet Then we’d either stop for lunch or keep going and do some smaller rides Such as duel and Congo river rapids (opens at 12, so the queue is walk on more or less) Look back as...... Lunchtime is best for the wickerman reaching the lowest advertised queue line of an hour, Then you head back either via haunted hollow or sky ride to the back of the park for galactica and nemmy Which fluctuate greatly queue length ride times, but when we went we only waited 5-45 mins for nemmy and then 20-60 mins for galactica (We did this route everyday for a 3 day trip) The spinball whizzer shortest queue time is at 2-3ish being 20 mins long, but that means a 5 min wait Then the rest of they day we just repeated favourite rides On our trip we rode about 11 rides a day and we left the park early everyday and it was in the peak of covid summer. Fair to say like these guys in this video it is very possible to do it all! Thanks for reading

My tips: 1: Try to arrive at the park around 8.45, this is really useful at the moment, especially since there's no Early Ride Time. The park gates open around 9am, so you can get in super quickly if you arrive at this time 2: Go straight to The Smiler, if you're early you'll barely have to queue once the ride opens at 10am. 3: Head to Dark Forest after The Smiler before the queues there build up. Do Th13teen before Rita. 4: Then head to Forbidden Valley: Both coasters tend to have fairly similar wait time, so you can do them in either order, but you should be able to get them both done before lunch. After this, just plan the rest of your day out according to the queue times :)

The only time to get a short queue time I've found for The Smiler and Rita is around 12:30-1:30. The Wickerman is a ride I like to avoid until just after park closing. Best tip for beating the ques.... for the ones you don't quite beat, take some small popup camping chairs in your bag for when the queues stall. All the "why didn't I think of that?" on everyone's faces around you is good, but not quite as good as when the staff complement your style and call you a genius/legend when you allow them to borrow your chairs while you're on the ride.

I'm so glad I didn't go during Covid times as there's no way I could have done the length of those one way detours, not even on a good day. AT really need to look at making the park more accessible for older people. I ended up getting a RAP, but there's many who will not be eligible for it and who cannot handle the park without some kind of consideration. Those longer queue lines even at quiet times were pretty much the straw that broke the camels back!

I always head for Oblivion first usually walk on, get that done. Then go and do Rita and Thirteen, usually very small queue first thing, seeing as they are two of the lowest capacity coasters on the park, makes sense to do them early. Then Hex, over to Forbidden Valley do those (small queues usually due to being high capacity rides. Work my way round from there, riding everything. Whichever out of Smiler and Wicker man has the biggest queue, I enter the queue at ride close. This plan usually makes everything rideable and re rides.

Let's say hypothetically I was to arrive with the X41 bus from Uttoxeter (at around 10:41 if the timetable is correct), since I'm arriving much later than park opening, would you advise that I stick to these tips or do you suggest an alternate route?
@LiftHillsandThrills
@LiftHillsandThrills 3 года назад
With arriving early being tip number 1 that throws quite a lot of the video out of proportion and would definitely put you in a position where Forbidden Valley would start to be filling up past walk-on / small queue levels. Queues this week alone at Towers have been insanity after 30 mins of opening, it really is those opening 30 minutes where you can belt out 2 rides and get the ball rolling. It genuinely depends on when you go, for example, if you went this week you'd be absolutely destroyed. If you went next week when the kids are back and the first week of lockdown freedom has died down then you're in a much better position to carry on with the tips in the video (minus the first one) Sean

Smiler induced headaches in me and all of my friends last time we went and really wasn't worth that as a ride, so i'd never bother with it again (been there, done that) and i don't really like spinball either, so any spare time is spent trying to get on fave rides again or some of the smaller ones. However last time i went (a week ago) we had 2 small kids in tow & had to keep popping back to CBeebies to check on them/relieve grandparents etc. which meant only time for a few rides each day (2 days). As we were staying at the Treetops we got a fasttrack ticket each (including the kids but not for kids' rides?!? WTF? Really irritating too as the ride queeus there were as long as anywhere else and i saw an entire go of the Peter Rabbit ride used up by 4 adult women because you can only have 2 adults on each thing and all of the kids in the party had already been on with 4 other adults. Seriously?!? With little kids waiting to go on? Why would you?) each day. These were practically useless as they covered spinball and smiler (none of us were fussed for either) as well as Wickerman and Nemesis (very happy with these two). Needless to say we went on both of the good rides a couple of times each day and barely fit in Galactica too (despite being first in the park and right there when it eventually got the all clear to start running) it was so late by then that the queues at Rita & 13 would already be mental (if Rita was even running, which it wasn't - all day). The moral of the story is - don't take kids to Alton Towers and expect to have any kind of Alton Towers experience yourself, even in a large party of supporting adults and even with fasttracks. Obviously, we found people to give out extras and half used fasttracks to before we left the park. I'm sure it was handy for them.

Yeah I mean I've been with little ones and well... it's their day and not yours. That's to be expected but any sort of enjoyment for yourself on the bigger rides is non existent unless you have a very patient and understanding partner and a single rider / fastrack queue to run down haha

@@LiftHillsandThrills absolutely - 100%. The kids had fun (despite the queues), that's the main thing and luckily the rest of our party weren't that fussed anyway, so me & the sis-in law did most of the running off to grab a go on a big ride. I did feel sorry for her though. I got to go on my fave ride (Nemesis) 3 times but we didn't get on hers (Rita & 13) once.

Great informative vid! Which is quieter at the end of the day, dark forest or forbidden valley?

Forbidden Valley is usually quieter being towards the back of the park but it does vary

It’s a little different with Nemesis being closed now for a year and Sub Terra hardly having the best throughput but we’ve been during these school holidays (and back again tomorrow) and haven’t had too many issues in the morning, certain rides go dead at certain points of the day and you can get every major ride done on every single visit without fastrack

What do you think the ques are going to be like on the 1st Nov?

@LiftHillsandThrills 3 года назад
Last day of Scarefest so it’ll be quieter than it has been but it’s still a Sunday and last day of the kids holidays so it won’t exactly be quiet either. Follow the tips and you’ll be fine. We did it first day of half term and managed over 10 rides easily. Start at Forbideen Valley and work back or if you’re one of the first in the park head to Dark Forest THEN Forbidden Valley

Does this work in the summer holidays as well? Are there any more tips for beating queues in the summer?
@LiftHillsandThrills
@LiftHillsandThrills 3 года назад
You'll always get at least the first 2 rides sorted no matter what day of the year you go following the tips. Naturally I can't predict what queues will be longer on certain days etc but these tips will at least at the very minimum have you complete all the big 6 coasters by the end of the day

Went last month and it was completely dead. Got 26 rides (including re-rides of course) 30 minute lunch and went home at 3pm.

Beat the queues by saving for and getting a fast track ticket, all the big rides done by 3pm.

Or save your money, use the tips and do exactly the same thing and have $$ left over for beer?
@Paolo8772
@Paolo8772 4 года назад
I suppose you're speaking on behalf of anyone that doesn't buy a skip the line/cue pass. That's ok: they're 100 pounds per day, on top of regular park entrance fee that allows you to ride any ride without skipping the lines/cues.
@LiftHillsandThrills
@LiftHillsandThrills 4 года назад
Whilst we hate queuing and have used fast passes numerous times before the park aren’t doing the usual range of fast passes currently, just one shots. So it’s much easier to follow the tips, save some money and still enjoy your day without being stuck in a queue

I mean it can add up as if you pay for multiple then it’s £300 for 3 My family have only bought them when we could all afford our own 😂 But they can be worth it, as I managed 28 rides with one once
@LiftHillsandThrills
@LiftHillsandThrills 3 года назад
@@tattie.b8594 I love fast passes, only ever seem to use them if I just have absolutely zero patience for queuing on any day I go haha but if you’re visiting a park for the first time etc then they’re perfect so you get the full experience with lots of time spare for re-rides etc
