🙎🏼‍♀️ About Natalie:
Dr. Natalie Law is an active bassoonist and educator based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As an orchestral musician, she has most recently performed with the the Lansing Symphony, the Grand Rapids Symphony, and West Michigan Symphony. Natalie is a founding member of the Lansing-based woodwind quintet, Pure Winds, which was recently named a finalist for The American Prize and released an album under the Orpheus Classical music label. She has toured the United States as a performing artist and clinician at numerous institutions and conferences such as the Midwest Clinic and the International Double Reed Society Conference. Natalie received her DMA from Michigan State University, where she also obtained her Master's degree in bassoon performance. She completed her Bachelor's degrees in both bassoon performance and music education at the University of Montana. Her primary teachers have included Michael Kroth, Dorian Antipa, Elizabeth Crawford, and Jennifer Cavanaugh.
Natalie is passionate about teaching bassoonists. Having grown up in a rural area without a bassoon teacher for hundreds of miles, she understands the need for high quality and accessible online resources. That's why she founded and created Building a Bassoonist: to help students feel confident, successful, and enjoy learning this unique instrument!

I simply have a love for playing music. Clarinet is my first instrument, Bassoon is my second and I’ve recently picked up viola. I am actively playing all three in local community bands and a quartet ensemble. Can’t imagine a day without music.

I played bassoon in school, and after 35 years I'm coming back to it! I live in Escanaba, Michigan where I play in a baroque ensemble that I cofounded, called Esky Baroque. I've been playing recorders, mostly playing flute parts and doubling violin parts. In our current season we programmed a suite from Rameau's opera Dardanus, and I realized that Rameau wrote some pretty cool bassoon parts. My BHAG 3 months ago was to buy a bassoon, build back my chops, and be able to play bassoon parts on at least a few movements of the Rameau. The concert is this Saturday, and I'm ready for it! This summer, I'll be playing Handel's Water Music, and next fall, Messiah. I'm excited!

In Canada you can go online to the “Council of Canadian Bassoonists”, they help you find a rental and a qualified instructor, especially for those like myself, where the closest teacher is a 5 hr drive away.

As I was listening to this video, I thought about some of my BHAGs: 1) Play with a number of ensembles to boost my confidence and playing skills. 2) Explore chamber repertoire, especially duets, trios, quartets, and quintets. 3) Teach bassoon or coach bassoon students at a few secondary schools or in colleges (CEGEPs in Quebec). 4) Play during a church service or mini-concert. The former two have come to fruition. The third point might come to fruition this fall. The latter is still up in the air. Thanks for this video! (-:

Thanks for that video! I've always wanted to play the bassoon, since I was a kid. I don't even remember what made me love that instrument! I've been playing the bari sax which is my other big love but I never had the chance to own a bassoon until a few days ago. My aim is just to be able to play decently some pieces I love. It's a very difficult instrument compared to the sax which was designed to be easy (for the beginner).

My BHAG as a percussionist going into bassoon is just to be better than my symphonic wind players lol. I wanna prove that you can be good if you just try hard :)

(For reference, I can play many percussion instruments, like right now I’m playing four mallet technique marimba, my poor hands lol)

7:14 Something tells me that a simple listener does not hear barely noticeable overtones. Just like an electric guitar can be made of carbon fiber, plexiglass, and its sound will not be bad. It won't be a bad sound, it will be a unique sound. I heard the sound of a Yamaha bassoon ($20,000) at a concert. My Chinese from Ali (the one that is Express :) no worse! Price less than $1,000 (in the search will be brand name Moresky)

I’m not familiar with the brand so I can’t speak to it! It’s not just about sound but about ease of playing as well. Key placement and tuning of the instrument can play a big role in how easy it is to play.
