Hey! 😊 I see a lot of health informatics jobs out there! I’ve only had a little experience with Epic but I hear that people love it. Cerner is good once you get familiar with it but some people find it difficult to navigate.

Hey! I think you can definitely transition into informatics without going back to school. I know a few individuals without informatics degrees. If your institution has an informatics committee, definitely join. Also, if you see any job postings, apply. UM and any nursing background is a benefit for informatic nursing.

With your background you will be an asset to discussions on how to improve the EMR systems in order to improve navigation of the system and workflows for the nurses and doctors. Plus having the experience with different applications is a plus. With informatics you’ll be hands on in building and maintaining the system.

Hey! Hope all is well! It would be beneficial to have at least a year at bedside because it would make you more marketable in nursing informatics when applying for jobs. Not unless you have a background in IT already.

The pay is definitely comparable or higher depending on your experience, place of work, and state. For me, definitely higher.

Thank you! I haven’t seen scholarships but I’m sure it’s some out there. Check to see if your job has tuition reimbursement. That should help out with tuition. From my experience so far you don’t need to know to much details about cloud computing. My institution focuses more of the background build of the EMR system and making the front end for the user easy to navigate. Cloud computing is needed for just general IT. I hope this helps.

Hey! I’m glad the tips were helpful! I don’t think you need a degree in informatics. There are a few people on my team who doesn’t have a degree in informatics. However, I do think it will make you more marketable if that’s your goal. In the meantime, I would join a informatics council at your institution if they have one.

Hi! I didn’t take any extra courses besides getting my masters in informatics, but I would encourage you to seek informatics committee at your place of work if they have it. Also, just apply for informatics roles. Employers like nurses with clinical experience. You’ll learn the role once you start. I hope this helps.

Hi you don’t need to get your masters to work in informatics. But in order to work remotely, you will need some in office experience. If you currently work at a hospital you should see if there is an informatics committee and join that. That will give you an idea of what goes on in the workflow for informatics nurses and teams.

Hi! Hope all is well! The first thing you would need to do is get into a nursing program. Depending on where you live, you can go to your local community college. There are online nursing programs such as excelsior.edu and you can do your whole program online but would need to attend clinical sites that the school provides. Once you complete nursing school and pass your state boards, experience in acute care is preferred then you can start looking into nursing informatics. Most hospitals have a nursing informatics department.

Hi! If your place of work doesn’t offer classes on your EMR system, you can look into obtaining your Masters degree in Nursing informatics. Or you can join the informatics committee if your job has one.

I went to GCU (Grand Canyon University) It was online. I highly recommend this program. The advisors were very helpful throughout the whole process.

It takes time. I didn’t get my first informatics nursing job until 5 years after completing my Masters. But you’ll get there. Just keep applying!

It depends on the institution. For nursing informatics, yes you need be a nurse. But, if you are in IT and want to transition into clinical IT I think that would be a smoother transition.
