Hello everyone, in this video I will be showing you guys the process of becoming a lawyer in Malaysia. This video is divided into three steps and let's take a look at each one of them. I will be referring to the Legal Profession Act 1976 (LPA) as well as the Bar Council Rules and Rulings.
STEP 1: "Qualified Person" is where you need to get a recognised law degree from a university which the Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB) has listed under the LPA. Some of these universities which offers an amazing law school experience, including;
i) University of Malaya
ii) Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM Shah Alam)
iii) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
iv) Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIA)/ International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)
v) Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM)
vi) Multimedia University
vii) Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UNISZA)
viii) Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM)
NOTE: For Malaysian students studying abroad, upon graduating, you would have to undergo the CLP examinations which is under the purview of the LPQB. Some notable universities that may have to undergo this is Brickfields Asia College. For local university students listed above, you are exempted from the CLP.
STEP 2: "Chambering" is where you will be training, learning, guided under the tutelage and apprenticeship of a "Master". Usually, this would be done in a law firm. A Master is typically a lawyer who has practiced for at least 7 years.
To apply for chambering, there are many documents and other requirements that you would need to have such as being a Malaysian, at least 18 years old, not convicted of a crime, not adjudicated bankrupt, and undertook your Bahasa Malaysia Qualifying Examination (exempted if you already took Bahasa Malaysia during SPM).
Other documents include;
i) Your IC and Sijil Kelahiran (true copies)
ii) Sijil kerajinan (Diligence Certificate)
iii) Evidence of Good Character
iv) Forms/ Borang 1 to 8 and related affidavits, notices and petition
STEP 3: "Long Call" in the end after completing 9 months, you will finally be called to the bar and be admitted into the Roll of Advocates and Solicitor at the High Court of Malaya. You will be there with your master, and usually pupils take pictures in front of the court with their friends and families.

Very tough CLP exam That is why most students join the MMU ( Law ). No need to take a CLP exam.

You have to check with LPQB whether the law degree from the India university is qualify you to sit for CLP. Further, you have to check whether your pre-university qualification is acceptable by LPCB in order for you to be eligible to sit for CLP. This is referring to the question LLB from India

Helloo, just asking for your opinions sir..um okay so i will be taking spm this year and i AM interested in learning law (stem A students who struggled with addmath) well ngl, one of the reason i kind of(?) Interested in law is i just dont want to be in sci field anymore (i don't want addmath, i hate it (but for spm i have no choice so //wishh me luck🙏) okay but after learning like a bit like introduction of like perlembagaan and so on in history textbook i do find law is interesting👍🏻 Plus im good with reading and memorizing BUT i never been in debate (and im quite shy and ambivert myself so like does this suits me??) Like i want to learn law but the part where lawyers need to fight for the cases kinda freaks me out . I believe i still have chances to improve my personality to be more braver(?) And confident to be a lawyer. Oh ohh pluss i feel like i would be super nervous to fight like debating for the cases (um im not thaaaaatt introvert im just afraid of it like the whole serious situation, um so what do you think sir??. (But i do have passion for law😫😫 my problem is that debating part, like do you have tips?? Like what should i do??😫😫. Sorryy i made a whole essays in the comment but i wish you understand my concerns😓😓. Anyway Thankyou sir for the video!!

Hello there! It's okay to feel that way, add maths is a difficult subject and very hard to deal with. Also, debating can be hard and it also makes us nervous at the same time. It's a natural feeling. But it's great that you find history and the perlembagaan to be an interesting topic and you should expand on that because it is related to law. However, in Malaysia, a lawyer is both an 'advocate and solicitor'. An advocate is the one who goes to court. A solicitor spends his time in office. Therefore, you do not necessarily have to debate or fight orally in court, but get involved in corporate and conveyancing work, not litigation. Though, in law school, you might have to learn subjects and do practical on oral assignments, so we might have to do it just for the sake of passing. Hope this answers your question!!!

Owhhhhh i see, okay so i had no choice but to overcome the challenges la ( i mean the debating part) but after that i have choices either to work as a solicitor or advocator. 😮wow that's a really great explaination sir. Like i now knew what my goal is like seriously it's hard to stay motivated without goals and now i have clear goals in mind and i feel motivated somehowㅋㅋㅋ. Thanks again sir🙆🙆, i was so happy my question got answered cause i have been wondering this for a while now and i just don't know who to ask. Im glad i came across your video. thankyou sooo muchh sir

Hi sir . I just finished my spm this year and i have passion to study law. May i know what are the pros and cons of law
@Averroes_313
@Averroes_313 6 месяцев назад
Hello there! I'm not sure what aspect of pros and cons you are referring to. For me the pros are: 1. Wide career opportunities 2. Allows you participate in many curricular activities 3. Build connections and networking 4. Exposes you to many areas of law and how the world works Cons: 1. Risk of failing subjects and extending semesters 2. There will be drama among the students and lecturers 3. Mentally and physically challenging I hope this clears up your question!

hi sir, i’m a 2023 SPM candidate in the science stream (STEM) interested in becoming a lawyer. i’m interested in continuing my studies in UM after SPM (hopefully!) can you explain what exactly i should do after SPM? do i go to matriculation? asasi? how exactly do i get a law degree? thank you in advance! truthfully i’m a bit lost on what the proper steps are 😓
@Averroes_313
@Averroes_313 9 месяцев назад
Hello! The fastest way to do law is either foundation (asasi) in UiTM or UIA law and you'll automatically be offered to further your degree in law in either the both, it's only for less than a year. But you'll have to sit for an interview. Also, you can do matriculation which is slightly slower, but you won't get an offer automatically and you have to fill in UPU and go for an interview with stricter entry requirements, such as 3.75 CGPA, unlike foundation with minimum 3.00 only.

For UiTM, syarat dia 3.75 cgpa, ada interview lepastu SPM kena at least credit untuk matematik and A- utk 3 subjek x silap, tpi x pasti syarat ni apply utk universiti private, usually IPTA yg apply degree law.

Hi, I would like to know that could i study in law programme if i have got 3 IGCSE credits for the main subjects MATH, CHINESE and PHYSICS, not included English and Malay, but English is passed ?
@Averroes_313
@Averroes_313 5 месяцев назад
Hello there, yes you may for IGCSE, however, you may only apply to private universities either local or international. They have their own entry requirements on the minimum amount of credits passed for IGSCE. For public universities, you would have to take SPM to study law, since SPM is an exam designed for public universities. With IGCSE you may apply for public universities, but there may be a lot of paperwork involved. Hope this helps.
