*During my high school years, Mrs. Carter, my Trigonometry/Geometry teacher, recognized my potential at an early stage. I had the privilege of participating in the campaign trail of her spouse, Mr. Patrick H. Carter. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to form a partnership with Mrs. Chism, alongside Commissioner Sidney Chism, before his political involvement. Notably, my current internship with our college police department has been transformative for me. In light of these experiences, I am confidently charting my course forward.*

Hello Jay! Im interested in getting into politics. Im starting an Masters in science in political science in September. I want to know if a person with a generalized anxiety disorder can ever run for office. What do you think?
Hello Mr. Townsend, I am now a sophomore in high school and I am very driven towards politics, I always have had a passion for law but with current events I have now aspired to become a politician for our people, I just wanted some advise on what classes I should take in high and collage? What can I do to further pursue this career?
Major in a subject that you love. But you 1/. should take courses in public speaking, and writing, and perhaps one in literature. 2/. Get deeply involved in campusg activities where you'll make friends. 3/. consider getting involved in student government where you'll meet people who may become friends for life.
It says you answer all question do you, I have the passion, I am smart, I am good with connecting with people but my resume is not good in terms of making money. I have every thing else I have the volunteering, toastmasters, passion, good causes, great ideas, but I have a hard time making money because it does not motivate me. Any suggestions ? Thanks Andrew
@@andrewaltimas9907 you are not good at making money? So what. Who cares? To the extent that voters care about the length of your resume, that is the least of their concerns. They are more concerned about what you are going to do to make their life better. From what you’ve said, it looks to me like you already have all the resume you need. Jay
@@jaytownsend22 Thank you! i had one unsuccessful attempt already I find it hard to find a party that lines up with my views. It seems to me that parities are becoming polarized. I will try again and I will keep watching your videos you seem like a solid guy thanks for answering my question!!! I will most likely try municipal politics as it stands right now in Canada there is an option to run as independent in city elections. Cheers Andrew.
Hello Mr. Townsend, in reference to point 1 "Educate yourself", I would love to see a video on how to educate yourself (books you recommend, online courses to take, lectures to watch, etc...).
I'm referring more to just the basics of government, how it works, etc... The very basics you need to know before even considering running for office. Before campaign strategy.
@@armstrongsimms6565 A quick reply. Read the national newspapers -NYTimes, Wall Street Journal, Politico plus your statewide and local newspaper. Books I suggest (I've read many-those below are my all time favorites: The Art of War, by Sun Tzu (If you read nothing else, read this one) The Path to Power, by Robert Caro Master of the Senate, by Robert Caro The Passage of Power, by Robert Caro Reagan's Revolution, by Craig Shirley Robert Kennedy and His Times, by Arthur Schlesinger Robert Kennedy, by Evan Thomas Power Plays, by Dick Morris
Hi Mr. Townsend. What can I do right now as a high schooler wanting to go into politics. What should I participate in or get involved with. What are some key attributes I can gain here?
Feed your brain right now. Go to college. Get a degree in a subject you love. While there, get involved in campus goverment, political clubs, organizations that include the best and brighest on campus.
Start educating people , start running a school or a create an education system in an innovative way - see if your education is making a change in people’s mind set ?
@@Gyro506 get involved with the community where you live. Volunteer for candidates you like, get involved with the political party of your choice, volunteer for activities that allow you to rub shoulders with influential people in your community. And always make an effort to be well informed about news in your community, state and country.
Thats great. My suggestion is that you watch as many of the videos on my You Tube Channel as possible. You will learn a lot about how to become a great politician.
Thanks for this video Mr. Townsend! I wanted to ask if there's any advice you might have for someone like me. I'm going to be a college graduate this year and probably head to law school, and spend time building up funds and paying back loans before campaigning, but my hometown leans the opposite way from me. Is it worth it to try to flip a district that is 5 points or so in one direction given that I have a ton of connections, or is it better to move to a district that better reflects my own beliefs?
You can overcome a 5 point deficit, especially if you are running in a city where you have deep roots. If you move somewhere, you’ll have to spend a lot of time developing a new network of friends and influencers. Jay
Politicians are getting a bad rap due to the divisions in our country. I think we need to redefine what a politician is, such as "public servant," with the emphasis on "servant." The first qualification is, is this your calling. Second, is there someone that aligns with your values, that you genuinely admire. We need good people to be politicians at every level. Thanks, Jay, for educating us!

They can’t do that well if you can’t tell them why you want the job and what you want to accomplish if you get it. so, first step is making a list of problems you want to solve, and how you will do it once you are in office. j
I'm young, (23), married, out of school, and working full time for what I went to school for. Not sure if you'll see this question, but I need to figure out how I begin planning for my run as a State Representative in PA. I have many ideas in what I would want to do as a representative in the Legislative house, but I'm trying to figure out how to get into the political sphere and what I can do to get started. I feel like I might be too young and the incumbent of my district has all the qualities I feel I don't possess. Any ideas/advice? Or what should I even do?
Dont tell yourself you’re too young bro , we’re the future of this country and I believe our generation will heal our country and make things better. Good luck brother
I’m younger than you so don’t take my advice but I’d wait until your incumbent leaves the office if they’re old. Something like 95% of incumbents win their races. So maybe keep building up your fortune and then run.
Mr. Townsend, how relatively important is fundraising in the political world? I want to be a successful politician, but I plan to be an entrepreneur beforehand.
You will be a better candidate if you’ve made some money before you run. And more likely to be your authentic self if you have something to fall back on if you come up short.
