If you have ever considered getting into the maritime industry, then this video is for you. In this video, I highlighted the two ways you can start your sailing career and the three categories of people who want to start a maritime journey. You might want to start afresh by attending any maritime university globally, for which you will graduate as an officer with the officer of the watch (OOW) certification. or you might want to start as a rating, either in the engine room as an oiler or a motor man, or as an ordinary seaman OS on deck. or work in the catering department as a chef or steward. You don't need to have any prior experience working onboard a ship or vessel; you can transition from where you are at the moment. The maritime industry is a big industry and needs more seafarers. I hope you find his video helpful. I look forward to seeing you at sea, mate.

12:54 “one year of sea time” is this log book gotten from the vessel you are attached to at this time ? I will also like to know are there known companies or institutions that offer this “one year of sea time” for those that attended a conventional university
@Thesailorslounge
@Thesailorslounge 3 месяца назад
For emphasis, the “one year of sea time” is split into six months. So you’ll come to sea twice. As for the log book, it is gotten from the intended maritime school. After which you’ll have to go back to the school that issued the log book to run your nine months program. Lastly, there are several companies that offer cadetship; some you’ll have to pay for a space and some are free.

What about Naval personnel that have log book from the Nigeria Navy and straight one year sea time on different ships of the Navy?

It’s easy for you because you’ve experience already. All you need do is get the basic mandatory documents to sail on merchant ships.

You’ll start by getting the basic mandatory trainings and documents. I made a video about that. After which you can apply for a position of either an os on deck or oiler in the engine room.

I have no prior degree in any maritime related course. I have a university degree in Physiotherapy. Is it possible to be a sailor regardless?
@Thesailorslounge

The only thing you need to work as a sailor is the right papers. No prior experience or degree doesn’t matter. You just need the trainings and obtain those papers.
