Thanks for the helpful tips! I have been a makeup artist for two years now and have pretty much gone through the same journey in the professional makeup world as you but I have not yet set the goals I set for myself. I noticed in all your videos, you don’t have tons of makeup products, like a lot of other artists; but very expensive and good quality ones. Omg thanks for making such a helpful video! As a freelancer, I always want to connect with other MUAs just to exchange advice with each other. I am loving watching through your videos!! You are so sweet and cheerful to listen to, and I agree with so much of what you say as a fellow MUA. However, I disagree with using Facetune. I'm a huge proponent of letting natural texture shine through and giving clients a realistic expectation of what their makeup will look like. I only recently started blurring my backgrounds of client photos, and previously I just changed the exposure of the photos if they were too dark. Just my two cents for any MUAs still reading comments!

Not in every state you’re allowed to be a freelancer without being certified. If you must be, certify bc you should do what you love specially if you’re great at it! Life is too short😘♥️

Thank you for sharing your journey. I can definitely relate to the process. I also started in 2016 but since then I’ve struggled with growing because im not on social media much. I always thought using facetune was like cheating but in reality by not editing photos im losing out! It’s very competitive out there!

It’s a normal feeling to experience before doing something different love. I was scared to fail too; still am. But that’s life! you’re still so young! Take this time to learn everything you can about makeup and practice for free on your friends and family and if you enjoy doing others makeup then go for it and start off doing it on the side with another job. 🤗

Hey Jen! I'm on Long Island and I really appreciate you posting this video. You mentioned that you do all the girls for the bridal party.. even with great timing (30- 40ish mins per person), if the have an AM wedding and need to be ready by 9am and you have 10 people..I mean do you get push back for that? Because that's 6 hrs minimum right there and some of the potential bookings that have reached out to me want a shorter time, so I've been looking to hire other freelancers. And then that's another stressed of who to keep in my network, does the quality/service match, etc.. can you shed any light on how you would deal w this?

It’s never too late hun. You can’t think that way because there will always be clients who will prefer your work, service and personality over someone else’s. I thought the same before I began my journey 4 years ago. Specially with RU-vid! I didn’t want to start one bc I figured there were so many mua on RU-vid already. But I was wrong, because my audience loves my channel, there’s always room for talented people!

When I first started I charged only $20 then $35 n now I charge only $50 for full face of makeup.. my clients tell me I m very cheap n my work is very good.. they love it n they come back alwayssss.. but still many ppl think I m expensive 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Where in the world are you located? There will ALWAYS be people who think you're expensive. Those people have no idea about makeup artistry, what freelancing entails, how much products cost or appreciate you as an artist period. Stay away from those type of clients and don't give out discounts. Know your worth, good luck love! PS: Make sure $50 is average cost for makeup in your area for freelancers* do not go by stores like mac or sephora. Also, pricing should depend on your quality of makeup artistry and many other factors!

You’re very welcome. However I’m confused by the second part of your comment. Hygiene in makeup artistry has always been the same. If the pandemic made you start practicing good hygiene you were definitely not doing it right before the pandemic.. not sure what hygiene has to do with this video though love..

If a client reschedules their date, does that mean you take another 50% non refundable deposit for the new date ?

The entire purpose of requiring a retainer/deposit is to prevent your business from suffering a loss should a client reschedule, cancel or doesn’t show. Keep in mind that if other clients inquire for that same day/time you’re turning them down because this client secured with that deposit/retainer. So yes, of course if they reschedule, it’s considered a cancellation for the initial appointment so they have to send a deposit/retainer for another date.
