When we start our journey into practice, necessarily it's all about us - about facing ourselves and getting to know ourselves truly and deeply. Through our practice, though, we begin a process where our burdens or bindings slowly begin to release. When we're burdened or entrapped by things, we're necessarily tied down. When we let go we become more and more free. Our vision expands, and the drama of "our stuff" seems less compelling. In this talk, Daizan Roshi describes how, at this point, the universe starts to live through us and we start recognising opportunities for helping others and to be of service. He discusses what's called in Japanese "intoku", meaning secret or private virtue (practising virtue in the shadows), when people just start doing thing of help without any need to be seen or recognised. He comments how wonderful it is to see this starting to happen here in our dojo, in our sangha.
In our lineage - the lineage of fools as it's known - it's not important what you know, but how you embody and live your understanding. And this is the path to becoming the next Zen master.
Zenways (www.zenways.org) promotes and encourages activities and practices that enhance human wellbeing, balance and awakening (satori or kensho - the enlightenment of Zen) in the many different situations we find ourselves in. Over many years of strict training, in Japan and the west, Julian Daizan Skinner Roshi received dharma transmission and permission to teach in both the Rinzai and Soto lineages of Zen. He now teaches at the Yugagyo Dojo in London, UK. May these recordings help you and those around you to find and realise the truth.

Excellent because of late I've become more interested in this life goal as opposed to the material life. I want to remove the ego and keep my humility intact. The need to be more spiritually serving and accountable makes me feel ebullient! I find meaning in my life and feel less unusual...getting some physical thing no longer excites me but living a whole life does.
