However, We can actually become even more creative, and come up with better ideas with a process that kickstarts our thinking and gets us going.

Makes a lot of sense, That's probably why I love game jams and hate my current bigger project. I need a box.

The first reason is exactly why I love game jams. They really allow you to come up with some ideas you never would have thought of.

Sounds like something some smarmy yet suave Lightsaber wielding guy said to some 4 armed Cyborg guy. I think it was a long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away....perhaps. ;)

Nice video, it reminds me of something I heard awhile ago about how people in grocery stores actually prefer having less options, rather than more options, which sounds stupid, because why would you want less options, when you could have more? But it comes down to choice paralysis and that its just easier to work with a limited selection. I don't remember the exact wording, but it was something like that.

Yeah that's exactly right - there have been loads of studies into this topic and consumer behaviour (and I think it kind of applies to a lot of the stuff we do too)

@@Madbook I think part of it links into FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out. See, most people are more afraid of losing what they already have than motivated to get something they don't have. Look at all the people stuck in the same old, boring job, friendship or relationship. They are more worried about losing what they have. Also, with the unknown being so scary, it's much easier to stay with what you have than risk losing everything if you don't like the new thing and lose the old as a result. So, my idea is that when they have so many options, they want to try them all, or a lot of them. The problem is they can't seem to set a starting point because of the emotional overload of all the possibilities they have to choose from and their fear of the outcome possibly being terrible if they choose the wrong one. I'm sure there's more to it than that, yet that's what I've figured out so far.

This is a really interesting perspective on it - hadn't thought about it like that! I agree though, there is definitely a FOMO factor for a lot of people, and I think it can get worse when people spend a long time wondering if they made the 'correct' decision - when most of the time there isn't a right or wrong choice at all! 🤔

This is an interesting take on this. Jams and themes can really give you a great way to narrow down all the ideas in your head. Personally I'm really interested in that sprite stacking method, although I thought Game Maker supported 3D. I did when I used it back in the day.

Thanks! While GameMaker technically supports some 3D, it isn't really inline with the engine's design goals - most of the advantages of using GameMaker and it's functions come from creating 2D games - as soon as you move to 3D you end up having to pick up a HUGE amount of slack yourself. Sprite stacking is very interesting and I intend to cover it in more detail in a future devlog, but I need to try and get a fair bit more dev work done before I fully show stuff off!
