How To Become What You Value

J. Krishnamurti once said that you have to become a light unto yourself in a dark world. The moment I heard that, I knew he was right. But how do we become our own light? How do we find our way in the darkness? Your values are your light in a dark world, but most people don't know what their true values are. When you know your true values, you'll never feel lost again.

The majority of the people in the change work community only give you the "how to process" without any detailed explanation "why it works." Damon is giving us the " why it works" and giving clear, concise and detailed reasons "why" the process works.

Just this morning, I was looking back at some choices I made early in life that I have regretted and beaten myself up over. When I looked at them from the vantage point of Self Concept and particularly Values Elicitation, I saw that I simply had a value that was higher for me at the time. Connection was higher than Freedom. When my values switched over time, where I began to value Freedom more than Connection, I looked back and judged my behavior by the new hierarchy rather than the hierarchy I had at the time. That was what has been causing my suffering! I didn’t betray my values back then. This is à phenomenal realization! And one that allows my value of Love/Compassion room to flow over all. I love that I can now look back and honor the choices that I did make in two big areas of my life that have made me feel so bad about myself for years. Profound thanks, Damon.

Replay: whate are other examples of "life contexts" other than work and relationships? I'm not sure where other things like hobbies, health, spirituality can go.
@DamonCart
@DamonCart Год назад
Health, spirituality, and hobbies are contexts. It all depends on how you see your life and how you would chunk your life down into 3 to 5 major life contexts. For example, a single parent may think of parenting as a major life context, but a person who parents with a spouse may call a similar context Family.

How do you overcome the situation when the person eliciting values does not have the vocabulary to say what they need? When discussing values with persons that have never discussed values in their live, I noticed that, even though that, maybe, they have some clarity of what they want, they do not know how to speak it and they get lost in a lot of words trying yo explain it. The other situation is that they feel the value...like freedom for instance but they use their mind and, since it does not have any apparent connection to their initial purpose, they ignore it. How do you make them to include everything and trust what it comes to them from within? Any magic words?
@DamonCart
@DamonCart 2 месяца назад
Anyone of reasonable intelligence has the vocabulary. They're just not used to accessing unconscious information, which is what a values elicitation does. The more you do it- like anything else- the easier it becomes. It won't always come out in an easy question and answer way. If they ramble and speak in paragraphs, they still usually give you their values. You have to listen for them and notice them between the other words. You will hear their tonality shift to emphasize the value. Develop your sensory acuity. The language models of NLP like the Meta Model have great questions you can use. They're effective at elicitation.

Knowing our value > makes us not need the external thing, and yet get the external thing easily… and be resilient bc value is still intact. Success > fail over and over > get back up and going. Knowing true values > aligning behavior > self-esteem, confidence, self-affirming (byproducts) Eg > Value kindness > behave kindly > confidence in myself as a kind person 13:41 Value = generalization about experiences that are important to me. Something I want more of. Eg > Happiness defined by my understanding of happy experiences 16:42 Values elicitation - in each life context, what do I want? What is important to me about that? Values will pop out. Break it down to the value level that leads to the goal… Want X Goal > achievement > success > happiness > freedom > peace 22:27 Connect with these values - goals aligned with values = motivation Make values-based decisions and act accordingly > In each context, rank values. Make better decisions.

At what point do you know you have a character trait that stemmed from your values? Ie: valuing integrity then knowing you are integrous, valuing authenticity then knowing you are authentic. How do you know you earned the title? If I mess up, and lack integrity in only one situation. do I lose the title and have to earn it back? If so, how do I earn it back and make it more stable?
@DamonCart
@DamonCart Год назад
I would call those qualities rather than traits, but that really doesn't matter. Also I wouldn't think of these words as titles and that probably does matter. Key to having a solid sense of self is your ability to validate yourself. This doesn't mean that we don't accept external feedback. Whether it's someone's constructive criticisms of something we did or whether or not we succeed at something, a person with a strong sense of self is not afraid of feedback. But we do not allow other people to validate what is important to us especially when it comes to validating who we are. No one is perfect and no one is 100% anything so don't judge yourself by the standard of perfection. You will always fall short of perfection, which means you'll always feel bad about yourself. The model I use is called the Self-Concept Model, created by my mentor Steve Andreas. It's beyond the scope of this comment to explain it all. We have an entire training program where my coaches and I teach it. Included in that model is how to self-validate and also how to integrate your mistakes to make the qualities you value even stronger.

@DamonCart
@DamonCart Год назад
Eliciting them using the exercise I give, which you can find in the Description of the video, will connect you to them. Most people aren't conscious of their values so connecting with them his haphazard. The process of elicitation will give you that connection and then once you know what your values are, you can always act in alignment with them, which will connect you with them as well. You will feel it. Your self-esteem and confidence will get a boost.
