Very clean work. Nice to see another contractor who takes pride in their work. People watch these videos and it looks easy it isn’t the case at all. It takes years of mistakes and failure to get to this skill. You learn from the mistakes and eventually you make it look very easy like he did.

Tech tip of the day, when you throw something up to someone, throw right to their face. Sounds bad right, but I guarantee he’ll catch it every time. This is what was taught to me and it always works! And No I have never seen anyone get smacked in the forehead doing this. Now this trick may not work if your workers are stoned or drunk. Just an FYI!

You forgot to mention the pain and soreness that comes with it. Some of the real slippery ice and water shield wrapper snuck under my foot a few weeks ago and I ended up off the roof from about 12'. Landed on my feet but it still hurt and had to take the rest of that day off. If I pick up a side job I will do the 1 sq. challenge.

Good video man. I was a siding installer for 12 years, worked solo about 99% of the time. Specialized in gables and overhang using aluminum and steel, no vinyl. I used slightly different tools and methods but end up with a similar result. It's always good to see someone else who really knows the craft. Tip for when your soffit ends right at the peak of the gable: Break off the first 4" section of that last piece by scoring it with your knife. Do it on the first line of the valley in the rib, so that the valley stays in place. Use the valley to lock into the previous piece of soffit. Now that last piece will die 4" from the peak instead of on the peak.

Our garage roof has a lot of rotten sheeting and the first ice/snow storm we got let to the dave's demise including the soffit, fascia sub fascia, gutter, downspouts, and all that. I managed to bolt in some decent sistered rafter tail repairs but ended up just screwing in so.e pine and mdf boards to keep the brunt of the elements and critters more importantly out. Will come back to this when the weather gets a bit nicer so I can properly fix everything. Love your work fellow vet, love to see when other vets are doing well 👍

Thank you so much! As a homeowner having my entire house re-sided, including soffit & fascia, and getting all sorts of "explanations" 🥴 as to why something doesn't look right, this is Gold! Just like Math...order of operations. I have been cringing everyday with the "work" (I use that term loosely) that is being done. I wish I could do it myself, but I like being close to the ground. 🤣 It seems that 1" fold under is standard for fascia, but dude is using 1.5" probably because most of the soffit pieces are cut skewed and he's trying to cover it up. Then the reveal doesn't line up with any connecting J-channel. 🤦‍♀️ I just want to cry. 😒 Ugh! Asked why the overlap on the fascia long side was not pointing to the rear of the house for a smooth line of sight, but the vinyl siding overlap is facing the rear. He says it doesn't matter because you're going to put gutters up, right? I told him it should be consistent regardless. You can still see the overlaps under the soffit. Ok, I'm done now. 🤣🤣🤣 And, thanks again. Your videos are so helpful. 👍🇺🇸

We use to house the cut away portion of the rake fascia cover in nailed on aluminum undersill trim where it runs across the bird box. It holds that long flat section flat without a lot of visible nails. You can make a narrow hemmed strip for this out of matching coil stock. Also that last piece you cut off the bird box cover should have been left on as a tab bent around to the eve side to flash the outside corner. That way you don’t have to do the same on the long eve fascia cover resulting in so many layers on your corner return(bird box). Good job on the upside down F channel to trim that roughly applied fake live edge clapboards. You don’t want birds or bats in your birdbox

Started at the top of the gable end bending the panel in the middle and work my way down both sides. Makes it even in both directions. Would like to know how you finish the top of the gable with the facia and any tricks to keep things from buckling in direct sunlight if possible. I prefer to bend my own aluminum. Also I have a method where there are only nails on my seams. I bend a receiver that I slide under the drip edge. And a reverse bend on the top of my fascia metal. Push it up and clicks in and will never come out even if you want it to. The bottom of the fascia I put an f channel upside down to receive the soffitt. My fascia metal is bent to hook the f channel on the bottom. It comes out really nice and guaranteed to not fall off. I don't like relying on smooth shank nails. Love your videos btw I just started watching
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 4 года назад
That sounds pretty cool. Do you use the brake buddy to stiffen it up orrr? And do you not nail on the bottom of fascia into the soffit ribs like I did? Coz I do that and only face nail seams and they hold up into the drip edge plenty good. If you notice we have the larger option of drip edge which is pretty standard these days
@5k37ch0
@5k37ch0 4 года назад
@@NWIVeteranConstruction I have a break buddy but barely use it. Most houses I do have a shadow board which helps to stiffen it up. The only place I nail is on the seams to keep them tight. If I could figure out how to glue it then I would have 0 exposed nails

Great tutorial. I'm about to tackle a huge garage with 44' flats and 22' gable rakes. Where do you find the aluminum fascia trim? I've searched the interwebs, and all the box stores (Home Depot, Lowes) carry is the vinyl stuff and I don't want that. Appreciate the time you take to teach us DIYers. Thanks

I do the same thing out of smooth coil bent on a break cuz not all boxes are small enough for fascia. I also think bending the soffit and only boxing the outside fascia board looks the best

@@NWIVeteranConstruction yeah i have to redo the shingles on my roof soon, i planned to do it this summer but i cant afford them anymore because of this current crap happening. had issues where i wasnt able to work and right when i was good to go this global pandemic happened. would have had work all throughout the remainder of this year. Also helping my dad build a vehicle enclosure with 3 walls for his truck just to keep snow off it and protect it from damage against the weather such as hail. will need to install soffit and such after we are done. put up 2 of the 3 walls so far with bracing and it looks great, just need to build the last then start on the roof rafters. thank you for making these video's! cheers!

DON'T FORGET TO HIT THE LIKE BOTTOM ON THESE VIDEOS IF ENJOY THEM. it helps out tremendously. Also this video was originally 55 minutes lol I cut it in half! I'm working on shortening up these videos without ever sacrificing delivery. hope you guys enjoy. only thing I left out that I wish I had added was how I make a connection on my fascia so that the next piece accepts it without being bulky. I forgot to cut it in the one that I installed on the gable and had to cut it while it was up

Great work. Only thing I would have done differently is to tuck the facia fold under the birdbox. 21:35. I feel it's a cleaner look. I use the same 15 oz Estwing too. Great siding hammer.

Agreed. They are a lazy detail with no historical precedent. Nice houses use something other than these “pork chop eaves.”

@@joshm2714 lp Is good. It doesn't take that long either. I don't usually have much of an opportunity to sell it because I don't usually get the richer neighborhoods. But it's ok.

Keep it up buddy you will make lots of money in about 10 years. There are not as many young people starting in this industry. Starting now you will have a strangle hold on the competition. When the big money realizes that all their old folks have retired and there is no one left to do this kind of work. Good luck to us all In the future.

That is OK for not using a brake. I use trim coil stock and bend it up in my brake, also much better to use the brake when the box has to be taller than the fascia will allow.
