This was a very helpful video - thank you! I never understood how to use light color pencil in method #2 despite watching it done I never understood the pressure and how to do it properly.

Thanks for making this video! I've been so confused, I thought oil based pencils on pastelmat worked the best, but I think I got it wrong. I think oil based pencils work well on sanded paper with powder blender or with pan pastel underneath... I follow a few artists on instagram who use wax based pencils on pastelmat, and while they are such wonderfully talented artists, the work ends up looking like a grainy photograph. I guess I don't like that grainy look so I'm glad I found this out because I wanted to get pastelmat. I think I'll stick with a sanded paper or gesso'd paper that also has a toothy surface great for colored pencil.
Both oil and wax pencils work extremely well on Pastelmat, but you do need to change your technique a little between the two to achieve the same sort of result. But that's simply the nature of the different pencil types.
in your technique, i dont understand completly how you chose the mixed color... sometimes you use light blue, with brown, and others colors... how you choose that??
You mean general colour selection? It takes some practice, part of it is learning to see different colours in your reference, and part of it is colour theory, knowing complimentary colours etc. I have a video with one example of how to choose colours, but I don't have a video with colour theory yet.
