How to bond wood with epoxy and fiberglass

When bonding two pieces of wood together using epoxy and fiberglass, technique will make all the difference. Properly using epoxy fillets will ensure that there is little stress present in the corner which will produce a much stronger joint.
Fiberglass tabbing also helps to spread out the surface area of the joint and decrease the loads on any given part of the joint. The fillet also helps the fiberglass tabbing by reducing the severity of the bend as it increases the radius of the bend of the corner.
You will be well prepared to bond your work next time you tackle a project using epoxy and fiberglass.

THIS is absolutely THE BEST, MOST INFORMATIVE video I've ever seen in using a fiberglass technique! It felt like a friend with expertise was explaining to me how join two pieces of material together, for a durable, high strength bond! I LOOK FORWARD TO ANY VIDEO BY THIS CHANNEL!!

Great video! I am trying to bond wood some ribbing to a fiberglass high top in my van so that I can have supports to build off of. I want to bond the wood and then fiber glass it to the main structure so its super strong. I think everything in this video will work for me (aside from the glue needed to hold the wood in place while glassing). Do you happen to have a link to any of the items used in your video? Any suggestions on what to use to initially bond or glue the wood strips to fiberglass prior to the steps in this video would be awesome as well. Ideally, it would need to be something that did not need clamps or supports for curing, since it will be on the upper walls and ceiling.

This is what I used for epoxy at the time: amzn.to/4370Gsv It’s by West System but I have since tried and prefer the epoxy from Total Boat. It is less expensive and works the same: a.co/d/39bJp5V To hold them in place while the wood bonds up, you can always use tiny set screws. You would put the screw in to hold the wood in place while the epoxy cures, then remove the screw and fill the screw hole with epoxy before putting the cloth over it. That will hold everything in place without clamps and hopefully won’t make too much of an issue with your roof. The alternative is to use fast set epoxy in small batches on a hot day. It will set up in a few minutes so you can just hold it in place while it sets, then you can let go and avoid making extra holes in your roof.

Does sanding the fibreglass back once it’s dried achieve a neater seamless finish?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 4 года назад
You can. To get a really smooth finish on it you can then cover it in thickened epoxy that is thickened with fairing powder. This will let you sand it back with ease and get it all smoothed up and ready for paint. The end result will look immaculate! Being how this was the underside of something that will become a storage area, I just painted it once it was cured.

Interesting series of dinghy build videos. A lot of work and that looks to be one tough tender, but also very heavy. How are you planning to launch and retrieve it from the mother ship.....halyard/deck or davits? FWIW that dinghy keel fillet would have gone a lot cleaner, faster and easier if you had put the thickened epoxy in a ziplock bag, cut off a corner and used it to 'ice' the epoxy into the keel joint.

Thickening agent... what exactly is that powder you added into resin and hardener to make that paste? This seems a perfect way for me to attach a fibreglass piece on to a wooden surface.
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 4 года назад
It’s a powder by West System. They come in different properties 405 being the strongest to 410 being the easiest to sand later. This was done with 406.

i'm about to use this exact thing to replace the support for deck on my old 79 snipe. gotta replace all the beams below. what's the best temperature range to do this at? i'm asking bc of the season or time of year

also what kinda wood did you use?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 7 месяцев назад
You want it to be warmer than 60°F and you want to use Douglas Fir because I have been told that it works best with epoxy resin.

Could I just place some quarter round molding in the corner and then glass over all of it?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 6 лет назад
The top and bottom edges would still be 90 degrees. You might be better off with using a triangular piece. The right angle into the corner and the top and bottom edges would only be a 45 degree bend.

Can I apply fiberglass on only one side of the wood as reinforcement? or it will fall off eventually? just fyi its for a piece of furniture, not a boat or anything near water
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 5 лет назад
You can and it should adhere very well to the wood. In the example shown, the fiberglass was only put on part of one side; the rest was simply covered in resin.

Having a hard time finding marine plywood to repair my rear boat seat/engine cover. Would regular plywood waterproof in resin be good enough?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 2 года назад
Yes* *it’s supposed to be good enough but I’ve seen over and over where regular plywood in epoxy rots out quickly next to marine plywood in epoxy that holds strong. If you can’t find plywood, maybe give foam cores a look. They work the same as plywood but will never rot!

I'm sorry but this is messy work. You're smart and can do better. May I suggest using a radiused (rounded end) spreader for your epoxy fillet and masking tape to keep the thickened epoxy off areas you want to keep clean. Why bother keeping it neat and clean? In areas where this joint will be visible, less fairing will be required and you can feel proud of a job done meticulously and precisely.

How bout just putting the think epoxy in a big Ziploc, cut the corner and pipe it into the corner, like a cake...wait then go over it with your finger.
