Amidst the Modi government’s push for expansion of the Metro network in the country, low ridership in all operational networks is a major concern. Transport experts Professor G Raghuram, former director of IIM-Bangalore, and Aswathy Dilip, managing director of ITDP India talk about the challenges and way forward to increase metro ridership.

Awasty Dilip sounds comical when saying don't improve roads and force people to take the metro. The fact is, as Prof Raghuram pointed out, the metros are poorly designed - very difficult to access and not integrated with the rest of the transportation requirements. We need the metros to be designed by a good design organisation, which incorporates all the learnings from previous projects, but executed and owned by the city transport system. If adequate parking facilities are provided, people can take the metro a little away from the crowded areas as well. The present system appears to be designed by bureaucrats rather than Engineers

People only take public transportation when the travel speed of public transport is greater than the speed of private vehicles. And when more people start taking public transport, the speed of private vehicles also increases. And as long as the speed of private vehicles remains greater than public transport, everyone goes slower.

@@AbhiPatel-pb9pp You forget the convenience factor. A lot of people want to avoid driving in traffic and the metro gives them the opportunity to do something else instead of worrying about the traffic. However, metros are designed badly as Dr Raghuram pointed out and that is a big reason why metros are not used

More and more people and businesses would come up along metro routes so they don't have to change routes and all. That's how most good cities work. If you see picture of Seoul,Korea, they would have really tall buildings along the metro route and very tiny buildings everywhere else.

Not denying that this type of assessment is required. But, to try and assess the viability of Metros when all the lines are not formed shows lack of basic understanding. Until the network is formed, usability of metros will always be low since point to point travel is still very limited. If such a survey has to be done, then it has to be in terms of how much is true potential for the lines that are open instead of simply quoting city populations! But, show banane ke liye kuch to masala chahiye na.
@theatisgr
@theatisgr 7 часов назад
The secret for metro stations to have many passengers is called inter-modality. The city where I live has a population of 3.3 mln people and the metro system with only 3 lines has a daily ridership of about 1 mln. There is a single ticket for all means of transport (metro, buses, trolley buses, trams and a part of suburban railway) which costs 1.2 euros and is valid for 90 minutes. In practice, you can ride from one end of the city to the other with just one ticket, because if your ticket expires while you are already in a bus, you do not have to validate a new one.

My 2 cents: 1)Metro is only sensible if there is at least 40-50km of network..just one or two showpiece lines of 10-12km don't serve any purpose. 2) Multimodal connectivity is important..like outside the metro stations you should be able to get autos/buses. 3) Parking is a genuine concern but I realise metro often passes through old and congested parts of the city where building a station itself is challenge, so parking spaces don't even come into picture 4)Fare should be regulated. And it's even more true for RRTS, maximum one wants to pay for one way journey is 100 rs. Not 180-200.

In London, I can WALK to the nearest bus stop (total 19,000 stops with 8776 buses) serving 670 bus routes, which is less than 800m from 10 million Londoners, and then connect with over 600 underground and overground train stations. Lazy people, growing fat as a result, and families take the car, but fit and beautiful people usually take the extensive public transport. But then all this was built using $45 TRILLION extracted from BHARAT by the British Empire and the sweat of African slaves. REALITY: the cities of BHARAT are unfit to walk like London, as the footpaths are missing, aren't they? JAI BHARAT JAI BIHAR!

1) First privatise all metros because government employees don't care if people are taken care of. 2) Parking and access must be made easy and plentiful. There are no parking in some stations. 3) end stage connectivity must be done so that life is made easier. 3) Bus Travelers must have concessionary programs. Regular travelers also must have monthly / quarterly programs. Tourists programs also introduced. I lived in Kuala Lumpur and always used taxis / metros only. 4) Make ticketing even more easier 5) Surveys must be done to improve services and ridership's. Nobody wants to use their own vehicles. You have to make it convenient or cost effective. All these talk of banning or restrictions of sales or even charging etc sales in car ownership and forcing people to use your poor infrastructure is stupid. that woman talking of restrictions or extra charges is elitist in her view where she wants to enforce her views on others.
