I love this style of painting rather than realistic because you see the brush strokes and it tells you it's a painting, not a copy of a photo. Beautiful work, thank you

I don't even paint, but I'm stuck in the same rut/obstacle course/ mine field with the guitar. There are days when I want to throw it out the window and myself after it, but listening to you and watching you work has actually helped, because even though painting and playing the guitar are basically two different planets, many of the ideas, as well as the process, appear to be the same. Watching a painting take shape is quite a remarkable thing to see, especially for someone who knows nothing about it such as myself. What it's done is take me back to a state of mind similar to the first time I heard Segovia or Django Reinhardt, or Eric Clapton or Jimi Hendrix. The sense of wonder is often lost as things that we do every day become increasingly familiar. One of my favorite "reset buttons" is to go and feed the birds and just hang out with them. This helps immensely, and I am certain that those birds were indispensable in helping to keep my sanity intact over the last two years. Now, after watching you work and hearing what you had to say, I can tell you that something upstairs has been reconnected. A lot like opening the window and just letting the breeze in. Simple, but unbelievably effective. Thank you so much, you are a fine artist and a good soul. I wish you all the best.

i find painting with friends can be great, can help each other out and laugh together when a painting just doesnt work and maybe work together to fix it 😀

That’s what’s happening to me now. I’m doing a commissioned portrait from a poor reference photo and I have 2 weeks for it to be finished , dried and delivered. I’m trying to figure colors and details from a black and white , unclear photo -

Not sure if this this for everyone but when I’m working with a bad quality reference for a portrait, I’ll put it through an AI engine that upscales the image. You can also try colorizing tools to give you a general idea of what colors might work and even use photoshop to tweak the reference until it seems like the colors are right

In your case I advise getting some inspiration from artists you admire, then use some of the things you like about their work (not like stealing, more like how they craft composition, lighting and color etc) and use it to make reference photo

Make references!!! Make your own photos, and one painting doesn't need to come from one perfect reference photo, you can make several (photo of background, of subject etc). But reference is key, noone expects you to be able to paint realism out of your head.

I paint for hours most days, but I also practice guitar and work with audio stuff so I don't have time for a class, but is there Patreon or something I can join to contribute to the huge help you've given me with these videos on RU-vid? There is no other source lately that has helped me with my painting than your videos, so I want to join something to give back. I can be cerebral to a fault and often just helping me to think differently has made a huge difference, in addition to real technique advice. Thanks!!

Chelsea did ( still does) some videos where she talks all about the painting she is making. I think it's nice to have tutorials and some video to discuss some art related subjects. When you're a professional it's not all about painting itself, it's also about dealing with failure, anxiete, the relationship with client and so on. I think she makes a great job with her vidéos. Plus she has a patreon if you want purely tutorials.

Making rude comments on a public RU-vid channel repeatedly (as this isn’t your first) because it’s not what you personally want to see is incredibly childish and entitled. What you are describing that she should do is centered more at beginners. As there is an incredible wealth of beginner-targeted videos on the internet, I would argue that the commentary she adds to her videos is much, much more valuable than a step by step tutorial-like structure for any given painting. I would suggest that you focus more on “improving your oil painting” instead of trying to police other painters’ content, since you clearly have the time for it.
