beadaholique.c... - This video shows you how to do a classic 8-warp beaded Kumihimo braid but instead of seed beads, we are using Miyuki Long Magatama beads. The result is a thick 'scale' looking braid.

The bobbins that were used in this video are a size 2 1/2 Inch. You can get the supplies featured in our videos on Beadaholique . com's website. The links for the supplies in this video are located in the video description underneath this video.

You only need to pre-load as many beads onto each strand as will comfortably fit within your bobbin. It is easy to just unwind the bobbin and add more beads to the cord as you need them and then wind the bobbin back up.

Hi! For a 7 - 8" bracelet, you strands will need to be 30" long each. If you want to make a necklace, 60" would be a good amount of thread.

If the holes of your gemstone chips are big enough to get the cord through, then yes you can use them.

As long as they are all facing the same direction, it does not matter which direction that is.

It took two tubes of each color (8.5 Grams in each tube) to make the Wreath of Independence Bracelet - Project B636. There's a link underneath this video for a complete list supplies to make that bracelet.

The number of beads really depends upon the project you are making. Here are the full instructions for both the projects shown in the video: Wreath of Independence Bracelet - Project B636 - (do 1/2 a tube of magatamas on each strand) and The Grey Knight's Dragon - Project N675 - (do 1 tube of magatamas on each strand). There are links for them in the video description underneath this video.

Neat! I'm practicing with a braid with 4 beaded strings, is there video(s) that you made with 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 or 8 magatama lines or can you make one? I'm wondering if you can make a tutorial on how to sew the beads in the braid.
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 11 лет назад
You can use a wide variety of bead sizes for making this. I would not go too much bigger then the long magatamas just because the hole in your kumihimo disk is only so big and if your beads are too big, your braid will not thread through it easily.

The thickness of the bracelet is determined by all those factors. A thicker cord will result in a thicker bracelet and larger beads will result in a thicker braid. Also, more strands will also increase the thickness. It is hard to estimate the thickness when you start because you could use a thin cord but large beads and end up with a thick bracelet. Unfortunately this is really one of those things that you just have to experiment with to see if you end up with your desired results.

In general, you can estimate that a bracelet will take 4 tubes of magatamas (8.5 gram tubes), so 1/2 a tube on each strand and a short necklace will take double that (but depends on the length of the necklace you want).

I wish I had seen this video before I made a bracelet using wire instead of thread. I didn't know where to tuck the beads underneath so ended up with a "caged" look of wire around the beaded braid. It was not clear in the directions I had where to put the bead but your video was very helpful. I'm going to try one with C-lon and another one with wire. May even cut the first one apart.

If I wanted to weave the beads in 2 directions...where the "scales" both face towards the center of the bracelet...would I weave the beads on the 2nd half thru the opposite hole in the bead. Like: \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ center/////////////////////// ?? Sorry, I'm not sure if this is covered in another video...I just found this one today. Thanks!!

We don't have a video on that technique but did make a bracelet that has that sort of effect (Though ours has the beads facing toward from the center). Check out the Instructions section of this page for more info on how Kat did that: beadaholique.com/collections/beading-projects/products/butterfly-kumihimo-bracelet

I was wondering what determines the thickness of the bracelet or necklace? Is it the number of threads or the size of the beads?? Thank you so much!!:)

I understand why it's important that the beads all face the same way, but does it matter which direction you pick when you're threading them on. In the video, she started with the hole at the top and threaded down, but would you get a different result if you threaded them the other way, so long as they are consistently threaded in the same direction?

Sorry for the delay... Am sorry, this has changed and now I don't know where must I write to you!! I am htinking to make the necklace as long as the Magatamas let me...:-( maybe is not too long, but, it is all I have!! Thank you again for your time answering my doubts.

Ok, thank you for your quick answer! I think that with only two tubes of Magatamas won't do much, right? I was thinking, maybe... a necklace?

Hi, Thanks for the tutorial. How long does cord last? Also can I use fishing line? Thanks
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 10 лет назад
Hi! I am not quite sure what you mean when you say how long will the cord last? I have not used fishing line for a project like this but I don't see why you couldn't (just my guess since I have not tried it). It might be a little stiffer and you might see the "plastic" look of the fishing line in the gaps between the beads. My biggest concern would be tying off the fishing line at the end and adding a clasp, you will need to experiment to see if this will work.

Jay Thank you for the clarification. Super Lon is a very strong cord and should last a long time with normal wear.

Hello! The amount of beads per strand will depend on the project you are making. Here are some projects which list how many per strand beadaholique.com/search?type=product&q=magatama*&_=pf&pf_t_product_type=0-Product-Type%3AProject&pf_t_product_type=0-Product-Type%3ARetired%20Project I hope this helps.

the only difference is that the "daggars" would point up instead of down, it would still end up like scales but pointed up.

Is it possible to use the long magatamas in the kumihimo bracelet pattern using the spiral bicones?
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 6 лет назад
Yes you can absolutely vary the beads in a kumihimo design. If you are trying something new, we recommend working up a sample swatch to see if you like the way it "lays". The bicones, depending on the size, might push up the magatama but you won't know until you work it up. Sounds like a really neat design!
