Your premise is flawed from the start. Tens of thousands of people branded and marketed themselves as programmers when they flooded the Microsoft Store, Apple AppStore, Google Play, ... with absolute garbage software. Sifting through the enormous mountains of trash these so-called programmers put out in order to find a gem is a herculean task. There needs to be a baseline level of quality that is substantially higher that what morons will throw at the public. I was once in a web design class decades ago, and the dipshhht next to me shared with me that he was starting his own 'web design' business, yet this ayhole was sitting in an introductory web design class. Gawd help the poor bastards that hire that incompetent fool.
I really appreciate the content you presented to the Audience I myself enjoyed every second of your speech it was so much quality and clarity do I have to rewind and come through your words thank you
I was on board up until the moment you recommend Fiverr as a resource to find graphic designers. I'm sorry but that website is an insult to designers and other people who provide creative services. You cannot get good quality design work for $5 or $20, which is the rates that I see when I go on Fiverr. No good designer would be caught dead on that site. It devalues the hard work designers put into their craft. You wouldn't hire someone who charges $5 to make a video. Why would you hire someone who charges $5 to make a logo?
I do agree with you on most of your points Michael! A solid single brand creation costs around $30k for a professional agency (like the one I used to work for) to develop, design, and implement properly. That’s on the low end of the spectrum too. In contrast, this talk was geared to college students who are looking for ways to enter the workforce. These are people who are still finding their way on set to work for free. The likelihood that they have any money at all to spend on their personal brand is slim to none, so I want to offer those people the option to have a starting point. Is Fiverr going to give you agency quality work? Definitely not. Is it going to give you something that can represent your brand better than you, on your own can? Absolutely. Definitely didn’t intend to insult creatives of any kind. Just trying to help meet people where they’re at.
