Sophie Mensah is an actress and acting coach at many drama schools across the U.K. including; East15 Acting School, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, ALRA, St. Mary’s University, and more. This class will focus on how to approach a script and a character from scratch, from the first reading of the text to creating a timeline of events and how to work through the text and get all of the information you need to create your character. You will discover the initial detective work the actor needs to do when approaching a role and how to work on a text as a whole.

just wanted to thank you for taking the time to go through all of this! I’ve been studying acting for a short while (1yr) and this has been a great help for me to pull together and recap on everything I’ve learnt thus far and prepare for my first true role on camera outside the classroom ! 👌🏻🙏🏻

Thank you, Sophie Mensah. Your lecture has taught me in a way that I can understand of how to discover a character. Many Coaches and at school as well, I’d frequently hear, “the acting process is fun”. You helped me discover the fun and how the process works. Your use of diagrams, examples, quotes, etc were all perfect ways to make this process less complicated. I am a kinesthetic learner, so your choice to explain things in many ways helped me truly understand this particular approach to character development. My sincere thanks and appreciation for your time, preparation, and teachings 🤗🙏🏾🏆😁👌🏾

Thank you so much for posting this! I'm currently taking a Theatre class in university and I'm just getting back into acting! This is all extremely helpful in order to get in the zone for a long period of time, which is something I struggle with. Thank you to Sophie as well! She is a literal genius 🤍

And perhaps add a 4th question: What does the screenwriter say about my character? This is such an amazing resource Sophie, can't thank you enough for this video.

Thank you so much! I followed all the steps you recommended. And I got casted successfully in my school drama! I don’t have any acting experience before. I was really shocked when the director contacted me!

Hey Sophie in my own interesting point of view, you didn't mention one of the greatest acting teachers alive Larry Moss. And full disclosure, he's a good friend. 😃 His book is "Intent To Live" and check him it out on RU-vid as well. Be well, sending rich blessings, Garrett

Good suggestions all around, although I would argue that discovering how other characters feel about yours isn't "one-size-fits-all." A lot of comedies, for instance, revolve around that old Shakespearean trope where there's an irony of a character with inflated self-importance, unaware of the mocking happening behind their back. (Bottom from MSND comes to mind). A lot of cases aren't so obvious. For me, I've found it easier to initially take stock of those differences and then simply disregard them later.

Thanks for your comment, I definitely wouldn’t recommend anything to do with character creation from a one size fits approach. Once you have your three lists you need to then further interrogate what could be a ‘fact/opinions/lies/surmise’. Because of course not everything is as it seems! Hope this helps.
