I love how people are mad at me for telling them how to wear their hats in the same breath that they are telling me how I should or shouldn't wear my hat.
Thanks for the info. I wouldn't buy that type of hat until I just watched this, flat bill not my style. I am way too old for that, love your work here.
1033stein tried this for the first time last night on a hat that I had with the higher crown and it worked perfectly. You should get paid from New Era, love some of the Minor League hats but would never buy them until now. Thanks again!
When i got my first caps at sge 17 I used to use em flat with the crown and sticker... 2 years later I just break em, remove the sticker and idk... I just got tired or idk but you are right lol ;)
luket905 Not everyone wants to wear a hat that still has the stickers on and with a super straight bill. Personally I think people look like douchebags when they wear hats like that
This is brilliant! I am a woman with a head so tiny I have to wear kid sizes and even those look utterly ridiculous because of the high crown. I honestly didn't think I could wear fitted hats but I recently found one that I couldn't resist so I tried this method and it worked perfectly. I did this twice, wore it in the shower a few times (without getting it wet), and did the stretch until it pops method (6 3/4 was a smidge too tight) and the hat now fits like a glove. Thank you so much for posting this!
I looked ridiculous wearing these high crowned hats, I hated it! After running the hat through hot water and drying it several times it still had the high crown. After the blow drying technique it's almost gone! Thanks man!
You're my saviour, man! I've had two high crown caps for a while now which I really liked the design of but always looked awkward and goofy on me. This method sorted them right out!
Thanks DFW, this method worked perfectly. My wife was close to kicking me out of the house because of the high dome. I call it the birth control look. Thanks to you, she digs the hat and all is well in the universe.
My personal Hero! Hate those swaggers with the stickers on. Thnx to this tip I can wear 59fiftys. There are to less 39thirtys. The 59fiftys are way nicer and thanks to this tip, wearable!
This video literally saved me over $300 dollars. I bought 8+ 5950 New Era hats online off of Lids, Hatland and New Era. They were all 7 1/2's with extremely high crowns. I've been trying to sell my brand new hats for $5 or give them to my buds with bigger domes then me. I found out all the 5950's that have this problem were made in China. I have 25 5950's, and the 9 that are made in China they're the only ones that look like this. The rest are made in the USA and fit fine.
Nice video! This doesn't just work for 59Fifty either. I just did this on a flexfit hat and now it looks a lot better on my head, Made it fit my head better. I'll probably do this with a lot more hats too. i did this with my 59Fifty and it worked but I just don't love how I look in them. This is awesome, glad I found this.
I'm a lifelong Rangers fan (grew up in Dallas) who now lives in Harrisburg, PA, home of the Senators (Nationals AA team). Since the Rangers were once the Senators, it feels like I'm following the Rangers third cousin. So yes, I have Rangers and Nationals hats in my collection. Which is why I followed your tip in the first place. And it worked great! The shower, the oven... I've tried it all and ended up with a wrinkled hat. The hair dryer lets me shape it just right. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! I wanted to get an authentic hat, but I'm just too old to wear it flat. This video gave me the confidence to know that I wouldn't look like I was trying to be a teenager.
I'm going to try this tomorrow. I got a Seahawks hat that I haven't worn because they take SO LONG to break in. My bill was of course, Flat, I put a ace wrap around it for about 2 days and that worked pretty good for the bill. Thanks for the info! Go Seahawks!
I'm from NYC and we wear hats with stickers ok billy !! and like our crowns big cuz where kings I think, but no all jokes aside its all about preference and I respect u sticking to your roots of cap wearing and teaching others how to do the same if they want , but nobody wants to billy!! Kidding , cool video I might want to try and rock it like that one day very informative billy.. Lol.
I saw this video years ago bro! I've been using this method ever since , THANKS ! I used to do the water inside method but it was too time consuming, anyways 4 years later I come across your video again LOL thanks again man !
Thank you so much for this i tried on a 59fifty the other day and looked like a big idiot, because the crown was too big. So i decided to just buy the golf nike hats, it just fit better and looks better on me. But i'll be trying this method out on the New Era hats i like em better because of the huge catalog they have and that nice embroidery on them.
I tried this last nite and it worked. I immediately noticed the difference after just the first burn and mold. There's still some bump...but I'll keep at it. AND DON'T USE A BLOWTORCH LIKE I DID MY FIRST TIME!!
I can't wait to try this. I like the look of new era hats (colors and embroidery) but HATE the flat brim and high crown. And the idiots who leave the stickers on them. Thanks for the video!
Dude, this is right on!!! Thanks! I haven't had a fitted baseball cap for almost 15 years because of the high crown. I watched this video went out and bought a blue Rangers cap and did the blow drier trick and poof its perfect!!! Thanks!
Thanks for the video man! I've got a new 59 fifty authentic Braves all-star game hat coming in tomorrow and i'm super excited to get it fitted the way I want to PROPERLY...this is one of the better videos out there... one guy was pretty much soaking his entire hat before hand
Thank you so much, I've bought them for years and I've always used the shower method but this is a much better. I live in the UK and I agree the 59Fifty that are made in the USA are different and far superior to the ones made in China. I'll be using this method from now on.
Love this video, watched it about 4 times. As with people complaining.... unfortunately most of the exclusives, and yearly hats are made in the 59fifty style and if you don't like the high crown you are basically screwed. However, this video has opened the floodgates for the real lovers of hats to expand their collection with hats they will actually wear and love.
at 22 years old i want to start wearing my cap like you as I feel ridiculous wearing my fitted the "hiphop" way as im not a teen anymore but my ears stick out way too much :(
Thank you!!!!!!!! The only hats that fit my Fat head are size 8 fitted hats. Nothing else. Fitted hats are high crown flatbills. You solved my problem!!!!!
Good video! Unfortunately I don't have any hair hence I don't have a hair dryer (why would I?). I generally use the hot water/shower method which is pretty similar.
Thanks for the help. I am about to buy my first fitted hat (have stayed away from them because of the high crown). Looking forward to getting the hat in now.
I just did my official Dodgers cap and IT WORKS. Keep the blow dryer moving EQUALLY. Don't keep it on one place, especially the tape that says '59 FIFTY." It can shrink and crinkle. If you do this with the nylon mesh caps, keep heat away from the area past the frontal support, mesh area. It will melt it and distort it. The whole cap is actually polyester and that is plastic. It all shrinks with heat. That is why you need to go slow. Go slow and retry if need be. Do it slowly. I ruined a nylon mesh cap, but it worked on the second try. Luckily it was an imitation. I we the bill part and was able to mould it to the shape I wanted. That took a long time to dry. I had to sit in front of a portable fan.
Thanks a lot I have passed over so many hats because of the brim shape. I thought fashion had moved on too far for this. I tired this it took about 2 minutes and I'm happy with the results. :)
Awesome idea my friend. I can break in a bill prety good. Even do the old timey kids thing STILL to this day if im inside a building, because that's how I was raised, which is folding the brim and keeping it in my banck pocket. Take it and roll back n forth like play doh. I still have the high arch on the top though, which looks so awkward!!!! Feels uncomfortable to boot. In all....thanks for the tip! Just bought a new hockey hat today so this is a godsend for me. Even my old ones which I hate the feel and look of. Not anymore if I can get it to work THANK YOU SIR!
Man , i bought long time ago new era cap , and i sweat many times with it and my cap was fitted me always good , then i bought a new one and i always had a problem , and i was looking ridiculous with those cap , and i bought another one , the same thing ... and i had a big problem , i thought that maybe a New Era making caps in diffrent style right now or something , But when i saw your film you helps me up !! ;) , thanks for share :))
Thanks for this video I'm definitely going to give it a shot! I've been able to get a good curve in the bill of my hats but the high crown always looks weird.
Haha, tired it with my Mitchell & Ness Cleveland Browns hat & aside from almost burning a hole in my head from that damn scorching hot 'button', it worked like a charm. Cool!!!
Good video! 59fifty's high crowns were always the reason that prevented me from getting into them. And you're right, I never understood the deal with the stickers haha
I wore my hat many times with the mesh, no hairdryer treatment, just wearing it, then one day I cut the mesh out and continued wearing it. Over time it will achieve the same desired effect but obviously this is faster.
awesome video! just got a new bo sox hat going back from the stretch fitted (which never fit properly) never thought of using a hair dryer before! btw all you weirdos this is how an mlb hat should be worn! ever see a player with a straight bill? no because it looks goofy! and take off the dang stickers lol! it's not 'fresh' you're wearing it....it's used sorry to burst your bubble lol.
HOLD ON. *WAIT* did I just hear what I thought I did? At 1:27 he just shared an honest opinion about the "New Era Hat Sticker Issue" without *ANY VITRIOL*. I respect him for that.
The first time I saw a young guy with the sticker on his hat, I actually told him about it, because I thought he had missed it before going out with it one. I was just looking out for him. He said it was intentional. At the time I thought it was a little weird. I don't care what the trend is from one year to another, I just feel comfortable with no stickers and a good curve on the brim, I find it looks better on me too so...
Cool vid thx. I've always avoided buying 59fifty because of the high crown. Ima try this method out. And your daughter was funny have 3 girls of my own.
Do you have any advice for a guy with a rather small head? I know the sizing and everything, but putting on the flat brim hats without the proper bend makes it hard to tell if it does fit well (especially on the sides), it looks like it sticks out a bit. Thanks!
when u try on hats in the store slow push the edges together like ur bending it in a curve so u can see how it'll fit when u purchase then u can bend it
My issue with the 59Fifty is not the high crown, which forms over time (mine looked better after just a few times out wearing the hat) but how poofy the back half of the hat is. The crown looks okay now but the back is still too poofy for my taste. Luckily my hate was purchased on the ultra cheap ( I think $10) at a fire sale at Sloan Park just before Spring Training kicked off last year. Actually, I've wondered if maybe the hats were flawed/defective and that's why they were so cheap. I'm skeptical enough that I don't want to buy another at full price as I don't want to have the same issue again.
Awesome tutorial. Always wondered about how to do this. Love the MLB hats but hate the way they fit new. Just did it with two brand new hats and love it. I don't like that much of a curve so i didn't do that part. Blow dryer worked great though.
Actually, I wouldn't. I really only recommend this process if you want the hat to fit more like a traditional on field hat. I have found that curving the bill while eliminating the crown forms the hat to fit straight on your head. The slanted or cocked look plays better with a flatter bill in my opinion. Hope this helps.
Seeing that you're a Rangers fan you should consider the "Nationals" cap a "Senators" cap. They wore the exact same color and "W" and of course you know, the Senators moved to Texas and became the Rangers.
I'm trying to break in some hats and am watching videos of ways it can go wrong. Do you have any experiences for how it can go wrong, how to avoid it, etc? I can't really afford to go buying backup hats right now but I am just a few years too old to get away with wearing them looking new. I'm also doing it to a 9fifty snapback style. So far so good, though!
never knew u could do this to these type of hats. when i go to lids i always look for a reg hat that is meant to bend but the selection is slim to none. ill have to try to bend one of these. i look like a penis in a flat prim
wow, awesome, thanx alot for the info, ..i actually would not buy it b4, way too goofy...now i ive purchased the hat for 35 bux and followed your vid instructions, and wah-lah..thanx dude...
man thanks so much i been doin the water trick or just wearing it out by wearing it snd it would take way too long...love this! i actuslly stopped buying these caps becaus eof the stupid high crown
Beware with the POLYESTER caps. What softens the crown, softens the joint where the crown meets the back area. The heat on the crown will distort the thin polyester on the head part. Do it with a counterfeit, but not a real cap. Save time, and frustration and buy the adjustable or the right size.
So I picked up a 59Fifty Harley Hat today after looking at it for a week. I've never had a 59Fifty because I think they look ridiculous, but this hat style was 59Fifty only. I saw this video and decided to get the hat and it still looks ridiculous. The crown is lowered but it still seems high on the edges. Any suggestions?
wow~ amazing~ can u give me a tip for size choosing? my size is 7 3/8. do i need to buy smaller or bigger? I guess size should be changing after bending cap & breaking crown. I have already thrown away one as failing re-shaping... OLZ
Negative. 39thirty hats are stretch fit and made with a curve. 59fifty hats, like the pros wear, are made to fit just right and the Bills can be customized. They're not made to stay flat unless YOU like them that way.
Thanks for this. I never knew that there was a way to break in a hat other than wearing the hell out of it. Which is why I've generally stayed away from the New Era caps. From my understanding, the New Eras are polyester now instead of wool, will that make a difference? Gonna try your method out.
