How to break into tubular Lock

TOOLS NEEDED .... Punch (optional), Small Drill Bit, Large Drill Bit, Drill. 1 Mickey's Big Mouth (ICE COLD - NOT optional)
I used a 3/32" for a starter Bit, then switched to a 1/4" Bit.
I have a tubular lock pic tool but my lock had so much crap embedded in the lock I could not pic it.
Replacement locks are cheap anyways
LOCK SMITHS ARE OVER RATED.

The video was straight to the point. No rambling, unnecessary talking. Good job.

Vice grips, a bolt slightly smaller than the center of the lock and a big hammer. Will blow the guts right out the back. No drilling required.

Not sure I understand. Freeze, like freeze it then strike it to break it. Not sure but wouldn't it be easier to just drill it out? You must have some knarly way to do that?(freeze)

I have one, used on another machine and had good results. On this dryer however I could not pic it. with the lock facing up, over the years quite a bit of grit and dirt got down into the lock. I spent a lot of time using a needle and vacuum to try and clean out. No joy. Time to drill. Thanks for commenting.

I had to drill one of mine out. Bastard put up a fight - but it was tangling with a machinist - that's fully armed with a shop full of carbide drills and mills. Regular drills worked fine at first, but as I was increasing the drill size, I hit a hard pin or something. So it was time to bust out the artillery... solid carbide drill-mill and my 1/2" Milwaukee. Yea.. it was game over. Poor little lock pissed himself after that and popped open... Made quite the mess on the carpet, but that's what vacuum's are for? :) I did nick the hole on the lock bar/plate on the back a little. Not sure if it will affect the stud on the new lock from tightening correctly, but I'll fix it with a spot weld to be sure. Thanks for the video!

I manage a large self-storage facility. When units go to auction, we have to drill out these cylinder style locks. Those darned things should protect Ft Knox because they take nearly 2 hours to drill out, and I've broken tons of bits. I'm going to try this method next time. Obviously, prior management didn't teach me this method. Wish me luck!

May want to invest in a tubular lock pick (quite cheap) and watch some videos - Lockpickinglawyer, BosnianBill, and Lock Noob are great youtube channels to help you. It's really not that difficult and will save you so much time

I hate those, at work we have those in almost 600 units, holding an MDF access panel to the compressor and coils for the AC unit in each apartment, and the painters always paint those key holes, so we have to stand there for 30 minutes, picking paint out of them, but then they get stuck, and we break thru keys all the time trying to get them open, until we ran out of keys... we ordered another 600 keys, but due to the shortage, and back orders, its been 2 months since we ordered them, and nothing, luckily Most people dont use their ACs, in the winter, so hopefully we wont have to drill these out 😫
@breakerbroke23
@breakerbroke23 2 года назад
600 units OMF !!! You would think somebody would just put a piece of painters tape over the lock before painting. It would take like 5 seconds to do that to each lock, that would save so much time and money. OMG 600 units! I had a 4 plex at one time and that was plenty enough. Stay safe and... Thanks for watching.

@KG-si3il
@KG-si3il 5 лет назад
Thank you very much, and it turns out I'm not a rookie: I am a moron. And thanks to my next-door buddy who helped me assemble the cabinet, there are TWO morons. My story will probably make some guys laugh, or worse roll their eyes and sigh. Here's the deal, I did use progressively bigger bits to drill the lock out all the way through. I still couldn't open it, as I wrote in my first comment. Problem was that the cabinet lid was stuck shut, and not even locked, as we had thought. My buddy had helped me assemble the new multi drawer tool cabinet, and he thinks maybe we should have waited until AFTER dropping the drawer chest into it, and THEN tighten up all the structural nuts and bolts. He and I tried to open it when we finished assembling it....and we THOUGHT it was locked....when in fact it was just jammed. We had closed the lid with the ring of keys INSIDE (duplicate included, and so we hadn't even locked it. Trying to open it later that day, we thought it was LOCKED shut, even though neither of us actually remembered locking it. He and I both searched for days. Today I watched your video again. I got mad again....went out to the garage, and gave the edge of the lid a strong underhand hammer blow --- and it flew open --- and before I could say jackrobinson, it fell closed again. I couldn't re-open it. That's when I fully realized the problem. I gave it a strong whack to open it again, and caught it before it dropped shut again. And there, right in the top compartment were the keys. The front corners of the lid were simply too tight. So, then I got some pliers and carefully bent out the lid's front-edges little wider. Now I can FINALLY open it with ease, and where I bent-out the lid corners in front isn't noticeable unless you're looking for something wrong. Of course there is no lock anymore because I drilled it out. But I hadn't planned on using the lock anyway. The tool cabinet is safe in my garage. I called my pal next door and told him what happened. We laughed, and he said "Well, I guess the joke's on US!" All's well that ends well. (It had been two months since we assembled it...and I was giving enough time to accidentally fin d the key. Finally: case closed!). Signed "Moron now promoted to rookie."
