How-To episode for you guys today! In this one I'll show you how I've been breeding and raising my own worms. I don't know about you guys but I spend a lot of money on worms for fishing every month. Not exaggerating when I say I possibly spend $100 a year. I use worms for bait fishing, Bass, and some Catfish species. Since it's so easy and cheap to make a worm breeder box, I decided to try it out and its really paid off only 2 months in. All you need is a container with a lid, preferably one that has latches to keep it closed and prevent your worms from getting out. Some soil, I use Miracle Grow's Nature's Care Organic Potting Mix. And Worms. This $10 investment can really pay off if you do it right.
Some key points to remember to make this project successful is:
1.Make sure your soil is always damp and moist. Worms need moisture to survive and keep happy.
2.Make sure they have plenty of food. I use cricket feed from Petsmart/Petco. $4 and will feed them for months. You can use old vegetables too.
3.Chose your soil wisely. A lot of commercial gardening soils and potting soils have harmful chemicals that will harm and kill your worms.
4. Choose your Worm breed wisely. Some breeds like Canadian Earthworms need to be cold and pretty much refrigerated to stay alive. I use big Red Worms and they do fine in warmer climates.
5.It takes time. This will not happen overnight. It took me a month before I started to notice worm eggs/cocoons and little babies. But once they started to get comfortable my box has cocoons and little worms everywhere. My population of 60 worms to start off has tripled in only a couple months!
Follow those steps and you should be fine. Breeding and raising these guys is not hard. If you find your worm box isn't producing I can guarantee It's because you have one of those 5 points wrong. So hopefully this can help you guys out and save you some money because it sure did for me!!!!

Thank you for your reply, I'm raising 15 baby bluegills to hopefully do aquaponics with them. Looking for alternative ways to feed them a little more self-sustaining. The idea of raising worms was excellent. I attempted to raise crickets and did not have any success at all. It was somewhat the feeding, when I saw the baby worms I was very excited. Thanks again

You can take this set-up even further and incorporate calci-worms/pheonix worms and springtails. The calci-worms become black soldier flies, which you can use to breed more calci-worms. The spring tails will eat any mold that pops up. You can feed the colony veggie scraps too, but don't give them anything you wouldn't want your fish to eat. And it makes great soil to add to your garden

Dude, turn it into an actual vermicomposter. Toss em your kitchen scraps and some gerbil hay (they love timothy hay), the colony will freaking EXPLODE. Worms self regulate their colonies. Meaning they'll breed like rabbits as long as they have enough room and food source. If there is not enough of either they will stop breeding and only mate when the eldest gen is about to die off (it's crazy brilliant). People commonly make the mistake of thinking they are eating the scraps, but in fact they are eating primarily two things: the bacteria that is actually rotting/breaking down the organic matter, and the waste product that bacteria is producing (the notorious rotting garbage smell). Slurp slurp! Bury the scraps a couple inches down and toss some soil over top to contain any smell and they'll LOVE you for it! It takes a LONG time for that cricket dust to create the bacteria they like to eat. But like anything, they'll eat their bedding and whatever you put in that's organic until something better comes along. Let's not mention the value (both financially and personal use) of worm castings for plants/trees. Little trick, if you want to collect some cocoons, lay a piece of white bread (yes it has to be white) on top and leave for a couple days. They seem to like to scrape their cocoons off onto the bread while they're eating the sugars and yeast. Another trick, bury half a brown banana and wait a week, come back and the skin will be filled with all ages of worms where the banana meat once was. An easy way to collect since banana is one of their faves (I suspect it has something to do with the ethylene gas it emits). Ok, so I'm a worm nerd in case you hadn't realized by my lil novella here. Somehow I was watching vids about terrariums and you were in my suggested feed...so, being the vermicomposter dork I am, I had to share. Good luck and compost everything!

Great info thank you I started using scraps lettuce these things like that coffee grounds to feed my worms they seem to be doing really well. I am getting mold on the top of my dirt do you have any idea what would cause this
@Beansie
@Beansie 5 лет назад
What causes the mold is not enough air flow if it's sitting on top. No fear! Toss a little loose dirt on top & they'll find it & tear it up. That mold is a lovely snack for them & they will eat it up. Just mind that the mold doesn't outgrow your colony, stir it up to get some air to it if it's more than the colony can eat in a reasonable amount of time. If it's not the food molding & your actual soil then give the bin a good tossing to aerate it & let it dry out a bit. Adding powdered dolomite lime or eggshells will neutralize any souring if you've got your bin too wet.

Mold is fungi not bacteria, just saying
@Beansie
@Beansie 5 лет назад
@@arrhazes8198 I didn't explain clearly and thanks for pointing that out! The fungi will be eaten by the bacteria that the worms will devour. AND they will eat the mold as well LOL!

I am a superworm breeder. One advice: Make sure to only make holes on the side of the container at the top. The reason why you don't do it on the lid is because dusk, pollen, bacteria, and fungi spores can get in. When holes are on the side, this is dramatically reduced.

A mealworm farm that is basic and has no humidity at all (like my farm) mold will not be a problem, a basic mealworm farm is oats/bran/cornmeal, a food dish, and some things for climbing like egg carton. This is all you need besides food for a mass producing farm

Arizona/Arkansas Fishing Sir I want to thank you on behalf of my youngest son and his friends. They found your method now they are making a little bit of money selling their worms to places that sell bait including to me because I own a small sporting goods store. They also do leeches and wax worms. How they do it I don't keeping up with school work and doing this. Plus they make their own plastic baits. The only thing I kind of disapprove of they set most of their stuff up at my home. But I guess it's a lot better than sitting around playing video games.

Just another update the first worm tote that I started is doing exceptionally well I fed my bluegills 24 smaller babies last weekend, last night I pulled out another 10. And still there's a lot left. Lots of babies and lots of eggs! The Second tote that I started I am starting to see quite a few eggs now the worm seem to be doing good they're a lot bigger when I first bought them they're eating. This week I just started a third tote with nightcrawlers. We will see how this goes I'm excited. I am also looking into making some living soil to grow some veggies as well and use the worms. Thanks again! Bluegill seem to like the worms they're getting more used to them.

Mitchy, unless you do a lot of fishing or have voracious vermiphiles as pets you will experience severe overcrowding in a few months. I started out with a Rubbermade 37 gallon.tub filled with a foot of crumpled moist cardboard, newsprint and a thn layer of peat on top (with a light sprinkling of sand for grit), I added 2 dozen red worms, each 1 dozen from a different bait shop (genetic diversity) plus a few I found in the compost pile. I fed them layer mash and some pulverized egg shells. In a few months I had more worms than bedding. Transfered a bunch to a second prepared tub which shortly became overcrowed. In less than a year I have been giving worms away to maintain a semblence of population control, and the old bedding is an excellent fertilizer/potting soil. The excess make an excellent chum

They love 50/50 yellow cornmeal and blended dried old bread, a little cheaper than cricket food and most veggie or fruit waste. Bedding PH is pretty important too. I love using a big box store bucket and cut a 6" hole in the center of the lid and I drill a ¼ hole close to the bottom and screw a plug in it for emergency excess water removal (drain)

So this has been out a while now. Just wondering how many of these bins you would recommend doing to be able to cycle though without cleaning out the worms? Or will one bin produce enough worms? I was just thinking of setting up 2 or 3 bins or is that overkill?

Hi Arizona Fishing, Hope you are keeping well. I am enjoying watching the wormery video, It's great to see the building of the wormery and with the great clear talk through you give, its very encouraging. May I ask if you have a problem with moisture in the wormery, I noticed 'no holes' were drilled in the base of the container? Wishing you Tight Lines Guy

I set mine up in a old bathtub in a dark barn. To keep it moist I used wet newspaper. I started out using soil that had worm eggs bought from worm farmer. I didn't have to buy food it appears that the newspaper was used as food. We had rabbits and put the droppings in the tub with the worms. They were healthy and very active and caught lots of fish using them.

Good question. I'm not sure where we bought them was was only a few miles from one of the biggest trought fishing spots in Oregon. And I alone would go out there 2 or 3 days a week in the summer. So I imagine hundreds of people coming through each month they needed restocked before newspaper was bad.

@Beansie
@Beansie 5 лет назад
@@annmantuzzi1012 Actually not everyone does. I don't. It's terrible for my vermicomposter in fact. I live in the PNW so the humidity is REALLY high. The newspaper stays wet too long and traps moisture in the bedding which makes it become VERY sour (and not a happy place for red wigglers). Then I find myself having to add more dolomite lime and eggshells than I would if I'd not added a top layer of paper. My worms VERY RARELY get any kind of paper products, even inside their bedding for these reasons. I may toss a paper towel in every now and then, but I usually put it in their pre-rotted food I keep for them. The only paper they get on the regular is my coffee filters, again torn and added to food mixture. If I still lived in the desert, lying paper or cardboard on top would definitely be the way to go.

No, actually it won't affect them. I've fed compost and worms GMO stuff, plenty of times and it never affected anything at all. The microbes were healthy and fed on it and the worms and castings were just fine. The biggest threat to microbes is actually salty fertilizers (like Miracle Gro) or "organic" insecticides, like Copper Sulphate. Copper sulphate is one of the few organic insecticides approved for use by the FDA on organic crops and it is highly toxic to things in the earth and aquatic life. Far more toxic than Glyphosate or Monsanto's Round Up could ever be. Just because something is considered "organic" does not make it safe. Nor does something being GMO, mean it's dangerous or inferior. It's been around long enough now, that we know there are no ill effects from GMO or Glyphosate.

Scotty Mack , sure you can. I mix top soil, peat moss & manure. I bought a box of bait & dumped in. Cover dirt mix with a thick layer of Hay, then cover that with News paper. It keeps them moist and fed. I do add plain corn meal to the surface when the hay gets gone, then add another layer of hay. Insane amount of worms in a cpl months! I have an old freezer, with door still attached, i did take the latch off. Plus an old bath tub sunken into the ground I have plywood covering? Both are worm factories! Only problem I've had is with moles, I think I've solved that prob with steel wool & SS mesh in the drain of the tub. That seems to have stopped the moles from coming up & in and raiding the bed. The freezer isn't a problem, moles can't get in thru the .22 cal holes shot thru the back of the freezer.

For $4 you can get 10 lbs. cheap DOG kibbles at dollar store. [ Dad paid $5 for a broken 50lb bag at the feed store] Contains corn meal, soybeans, vitamins, minerals...all kinds of stuff. √ the labels, cricket-food and dog-food are aboot the same, bro. Sawdust (free) mixed with river sand (free) and dash of lime (cheap) is all you really need + kibble (cheap) grows worms fast & casting soil (no sifting needed) easy. All that $chmansy $tuff is B$. ;-)

@heavymechanic2 7 лет назад
I used to grind up chicken feed and mix it with oats, cornmeal and some dolomite limestone powder. To get the worms to breed, they need calcium and grains. Worms also like coffee grounds, lettuce, pumpkin and corn husks. Peat Moss is better bedding than potting soil.
