Brewing dragon ball puer doesn't have to be difficult. If you've tried, but found that you can't get much out of them after even 4-5 infusions, then we have a few tips that might help.
For the most part, you can gongfu brew the dragon ball just as you would any tea. That means a 1 gram to 15-20ml water ratio is recommended, along with very hot water (95c to boiling).
During the first brew (rinse), allow the dragon ball to steep a little longer, for about 30 seconds. You can also go by feeling, extending that if you know that the dragon ball is rolled a little tighter. If it's one of our balls though, it'll be on the looser side and start unfolding well within 2 brews.
The first real brew can be about 15 seconds. Again, you can play with this a bit if you think it might be a bit weak. This should be a good amount of time though.
After this, just go back to regular gongfu brewing times. 10 seconds, +5 seconds per brew. Your dragon ball should be fairly open and the tea should be flavourful.
If you want to try for yourself but don't have any dragon balls, you're in luck, because we know a place: www.bitterleafteas.com/shop/t...

That's some impressive spin indeed! I like the idea of reusing the first water, I hadn't considered that before. Thanks!

It works well enough for us during the rinse. The temperature may be a bit lower, but it still opens the ball and saves a bit more water, rather than wasting.

I appreciate that you laid everything out as loose suggestions. I got into smoking pipes a couple decades ago, and I found there were more opinions on the "right" way to pack a pipe than there are citizens in Chicago. The lesson i took away from that was that *every*method works, and you just need to settle on the one that fits you. I'm learning now that tea is the same thing. There's no *wrong* way to brew it. Experiment and find the one that best fits you, or the moment you find yourself in.

That's just it. Especially when the experience is subjective, there's no one size fits all method. We're happy to share what we think is the best way according to our experience, but that's not necessarily going to work for everyone, which is fine. Even then, other variables can change and require adjustments, so it's important to be flexible and experiment.

I think it also depends on the tea you are using, i have a 9 years old dragon ball puer that gets bitter easily so i prefer to do flash infusions. The amazing thing about tea is that the more you get to know what you are drinking the more you understand how to brew it in the way you like the most

Heh yeah... maybe not the most helpful, but in some ways I find it makes it more enjoyable than weighing the tea, timing the steeps and all that - outside of evaluating teas, of course!

FYI, I really liked the dragonball approach to samples this season. I don't know how practical it is for you guys, but definitely a superior experience.
@BitterleafTeas
@BitterleafTeas 3 года назад
This is good to know! We definitely like it too. It's extra work in terms of portioning maocha for different pressings, but saves a lot of effort when it comes to portioning samples. The main criticism we've had is when people want to use less tea (4 grams or so) to brew - it's not as easy to cut a dragon ball in half. Still, I'll think we'll probably continue with this format!

I just got a Sheng puer that only came in dragon balls. When I tried brewing I tired to brew it the same way I did any other tea and was confused as to why it was coming out so weak. Thank you, now I can get the full experience out of my tea!

They're a little bit tough to brew at first, but I'm glad this guide could help out a bit. Some balls are also a bit tighter and slower to unfurl than others, so feel free to adjust the timing for the first 2 brews if needed 😎

How did I never think to use the warming water for the rinse? That's such a good idea
@BitterleafTeas
@BitterleafTeas 3 года назад
We do this all the time when we're just brewing for ourselves. This goes against the brewing technique taught to tea masters in schools and training centers, and in a more formal tea brewing setting it might not fly... but for us normal folk I think as long as you're happy with the results, you should be free to brew however you like 😁

How'd you need an almost 3 minutes video to explain 1. Put dragon ball in 2. Brew as normal
@BitterleafTeas
@BitterleafTeas 3 года назад
We didn't, that's why most of the video is covering the "brew as normal" part, but with a few tweaks. A lot of people who haven't brewed dragon balls also haven't brewed gongfu and it's a question we get almost daily. But maybe we should hire you to plan future videos and save everyone some time - our next video will be "how to boil water" and I'm worried we're over complicating by explaining how to collect rainwater and start a fire.
