Oooo DO NOT use soil for an orchid!!! It will rot! You need FRESH orchid bark or moss! And put it in a special plastic orchid pot so it will stay root bound, that’s what they love. It looks like it was rotting from too much water before, don’t over water either! Honestly it looks like it may be too far gone but perhaps not, just get it out of soil 😫
@@lapua9828 NO. do not use sand, soil, or peat, ONLY use peat if you use ALOT of perlite(peat:perlite=1:3). Use moss, fern roots, wood chips, wood, coal and porous stuff, like hydroton. Some species of orchids like some vandas and vanillas love soil, so do your research.
@@lapua9828 the only reason you could use peat and perlite, but no soil. Is because cocopeat or peatmoss doesn't have a lot of nutrients in them. Beware, and do your research.
All those roots look rotted. You were pulling the velamen off of the roots which is a sheath that helps the roots absorb water, and it being so easily removed is a sign the root is too far gone. In the future never use soil as a potting medium for orchids unless they're specifically terrestrial which phalaenopsis orchids arent. You should use orchid bark, pot it into a clear plastic slotted pot, and water when you can see that most of the roots are dry and silvery white. When watering, use distilled or rain water, and let the roots soak for a couple minutes before dumping the excess water. Best of luck!
You just ripped the velamen off of the few viable roots you did have. You also planted it in SOIL! The vast majority of orchids are lithophytes or epiphytes…..they don’t grow in soil. Hence why it was originally in bark. People please don’t follow anything you saw in this video when it comes to growing orchids.
Everything in this video made me gag, considering I've saved an orchid that looked like what she had at first. I fear for anyone doing anything remotely like what she did
The tittle is totally incorrect, it shouldn’t be title will this being my 💀 orchid to life? Is still clickable and honest. However the tittle she used is a lied 🤥 and frankly I will never want to follow her channel or click on any of her videos as she’s misleading her audience and also if you’re an orchid person you know what she just did is totally horrible for the poor plant
@@luci_datum Literally. My orchids sit in *empty* pots and I either spray their roots with water or let them sit in the sink for a little bit and they are doing great.
Happy you are so a happy go do girl. But never remove the outside of the root like that. Only cut of the ones that are bad. You killed it. Looked like there was 2 good roots still there. But practice makes perfect. You are a good person with good energy. Keep posting.
There's a lot of newbies to gardening, landscaping, and plants that decide to start channels to make money. (And a few I've seen lately have merch stores). This channel isn't so bad, but it's hard when you do this for a while or actually have a passion about something (orchids are not mine), and then see people just make videos and make these big mistakes. My pet peeve are the fruit trees from seed videos. Most trees take FOREVER to get from seed to anything even resembling the size of a fruiting tree, and typically they're grafted to ensure you get A) fruit. B) the varietal you want. A lot of hybridization can occur and cross pollination meaning what you get is probably going to be weird or bad, or you'll get nothing.... Citrus, stone fruits, and pears and apples all are like this, and they're the ones most commonly attempted. It's also not like after 3 years of trying to grow a cherry tree you're going to go back and say, "you were wrong and that totally didn't work!!!" Landscapers esp the mowers and cleaners DESTROY everything in their massive cleanups. They completely scalp overgrown grass, move over neglected flower beds, and just go to town with the string trimmer on hedges (wrong tool and it severely damages the plants). They're supposed to be "satisfying" but as some of the biggest cringe content.
i will never understand people that can just hear a tip once or twice then immediately trust it and implement it without any further research. i gotta research for at least a couple hours before making any decision ever 😭 lol
IT WILL DIE IN THAT POT. They are very particular, need orchid soil specifically, and should never be put in that ridiculous pot. Christ. They are sold in that manner SO THEY DIE and you will buy more. Don’t leave it in there.
@@growithjessie in pot that’s a lot bigger than that with proper orchid soil. This orchid in particular already looks pretty gone, but there’s a chance it could come back if treated right. In the future, always repot your orchids after buying them
@@growithjessie a plastic pot with holes that promote air ventilation!!! (Very important) and also a transparent pot that you can see the roots and you dont need to take the plant out of the pot to see what is happening to the roots. (And never use a decorative pot with orchids because its necessary to have a transparent pot with holes for drainage and ventilation) I hate to say it to you, but if that orchid was salvageable, you killed it (To see if the root is good you need to feel if its mushy or hard, if its hard Its a good root and if its mushy you only need to cut the mushy part) ps: please dont destroy the root by opening them!
Orchids in the wild grow off trees, using aerial roots to cling onto to trees, they really like a lot of airflow and humidity, so repotting in sphagnum moss or orchid bark is your best bet, I’ve found that orchid bark is a lot better because it’s a lot less likely that you will over water your orchid, it’s best to also keep them in a plastic pot with holes on the side and in the bottom (and if it didn’t come with one you can diy it with your own plastic cups I did that to one of mine lol 😂😂) but they are tricky plants sometimes, so don’t get down on yourself that you killed one it happens! Best of luck on any future orchids!
That thing is beyond salvageable. It would be a miracle from the plant gods if that orchid rebounds from all trauma to whatever roots were left and manages to survive from that dense soil.
You could try it in mulch or just spray it with hydrogen peroxide, let dry, and spray the inside of an empty Tupperware with the tiniest bit of water and close it in there. A lot of epiphytic plants will bounce back in just humidity as long as they're clean and no developing mold
I'm not sure that'll actually recover 😔 I'm new to orchids but one of the things I learned is that when the fleshy outer covering rots or is taken off of the root, that root is no longer functional. Also typically when the orchid dies back it keeps most or all of its leaves, just the flowers die. Orchids are epiphytic so they grow up in trees with very little actual soil around their roots. That's why orchid bark is used. It emulates the natural, quick draining environment they grow in. I repotted my orchid in espoma (just the brand my nursery had) orchid mix in a plastic orchid pot with drainage slits on the bottom and sides and I bottom water/let it soak in a bowl of water for about 15 minutes whenever I notice the leaves are getting limp and wrinkly. Avoid getting water into the crown of the leaves as this might cause rot. I also keep it in bright indirect light, the brightest spot I have where the sun never actually hits the plant directly. I think this is working well, I'm getting a new leaf even! Good luck, and happy growing!
My boyfriend gifted me an orchid a few years ago, the bloom died and the leaves are healthy but it will not rebloom! Meanwhile his mother has a collection of massive incredible orchids that ALWAYS flower and last for months and months
Hey all these roots are rotten, if the roots are mushy like that that means they’re dead. The thin roots you’re seeing is the internal parts of the plant’s roots, you need the whole thing. Also, if there is no crown it can’t grow back
You don’t necessarily need to use an ice cube, it really doesn’t matter how much water you put in it, just so long as you let it dry out before watering again, orchids like warm water much more then cold, but man six years!!! That’s an impressive old orchid!! Props to you!
Orchids grow on trees, you put it in bark with a air pot, soak when bone dry and keep it at 17c for 6 weeks for flower spikes it’s so easy 😭 how are people still making these mistakes
Omg 🤣🤣🤣 this right here is too funny! I don't know why the sheep people get me but they do🤣 and don't forget to never water it, that's how you get it to bloom foreverrrr 🤣🤣🤣 believe that one
I did this after watching this video not really thinking much of it after tossing it into water and putting it at the top of my kitchen cabinet instead of in bark or soil. I literally forgot about the thing but I pulled it down one day because I wanted the glass to propagate something else and what do ya know! Two air roots about an inch long, thick, firm, juicy and green now idk what to do so I put fresh water in the bottom only high enough to touch the naked roots and my goodness those air roots have just taken off!
so glad I read the section because people know what they're talking about. I got to replant my orchard and will put it in some water with no potting soil
It has some greens, and has 2 "main roots" (ig that's what their called??) It should definitely be able to grow back! It might require more care however-
It’s not going to grow back bits crown was already dead to begin with. Then she literally butchered the few viable roots it did have and to top it off she reported it in soil. Please don’t follow these instructions.
You could also just tie it on some driftwood, with some moss covering the roots. I've had mine since last year and mounted it to driftwood. it's pushed out 2 new leaves and 2 flower stalks, at different times. I'm also terrible and give it water from my fish tanks. I let it dry to the point the leaves get leathery before I water it again. Not all the time but, most. It gets bright indirect light most of the year but, in the beginning it gets a few hours of direct sunlight. I also don't keep my house at a steady temp. It gets cold and hot in here.
A green root is a very good sign but I would not add potting soil to the wood chips because the green root might rot. The potting soil holds too much water. I am using Orchid baskets now.
Do you have an idea for an Orchid where the roots have rotted of? The leaves are still a vibrant green, and there are 2 small airial roots, but the rest is gone It has some sentimental value and is quite old and big, so any tips would help 💕
You have 2 possibilities: you put your orchid on top of water but not let it touch the plant at all (évaporation will help it) Or you just wash well with soap thé transparent pot (because phalaenopsis roots photosynthetise) with fresh dry bark and you let it alone for a couple weeks or more then you slowly water it again. An orchid like bright sun (but not sunburns si be carefull) and it's better if it's thirsty than overwatering. If it's recent rootrot spray some sulfure fongicide
Orchids are more sensitive to care for. Most stores don’t pot them right and I’ve learned after killing a few. Here are some tips: Orchids need air in their roots otherwise they drown. Water less once a week warm water (preferably filtered), no ice cubes (cold will kill roots), if they are potted like yours with soil repot it asap in a clear orchid pot(plastic). Pots should have lots of drainage holes, use orchid bark or moss no soil. Orchids live on trees like Hoyas so bark and air for roots makes sense.
In my province all orchids are berry green because the weather there is balance it's more green when it's in dark place.but do not plant orchids in soit It can't be alive just plant it in a pot full of moss mixed with blended wood or just simply plant it in alive tree
I understand the climate is totally diff but here in the Philippines, we never plant Orichids in soil. We only "attach/bind" them in any bark - fresh/live or dead and even with little to no care, they grow well without issues. P.S: we use loose coconut husk to wrap/bind the Orchid and our plants have been thriivng for decades
You NEVER use soil and you should NEVER RIP the dead off an orchid. You should use sterilized cutter and trim the dead off. This orchid should of been place in water for a while
You pulled off some living parts… and stripped some roots that weren’t rotten. I cut the rotten roots and replant in moss and do an overnight soak in the moss.
The soil will rot it worse. Needed some hdrgen peroxide solution spray and a holed pot with bark moss or red rock. I'm interested to see it it survives
Please don't follow these instructions.... Missorchidgirl has a great RU-vid channel about orchids. You need hydrogen peroxide, proper tools and orhid bard. You also need proper orhid bark and sphagnum moss...
