I made a dipole a couple years back with some lamp wire and some scrap coax.Ive talked about 10 miles to my son in his truck.I usually take it when i go camping. Handy to have and cheap to make. 73's 514 Ontario Canada

Βeautiful work, in the true spirit of CB and Ham radio. That's how it used to be in the 'good ol'days'. A lot of our equipment was home brewed, including linear amps (tubes and high voltages). Well done! 73's from Sydney, Aus.

Good job on the free Stealth Antenna !! ......Any kind of bare or insulated wire including stranded Stainless Steel works fine.....Horizontal 90° ground Radials have a slight "Theoretical" Lower radiation angle towards Horizon for Stronger Local (non--skip) signal range....It seems amazing that a "Calibrated Standard" 1 S- Unit change = 4X difference (4 watts to 16 watts for example) in Radiated power !! ....

Cool! You probably know that putting the base of the driven element at 1/4 wave length above ground then running those 1/4 wave length radials from the base height, attached to braided side of yer coax of course, out at 42-45 degrees toward the ground yer transceiver is seeing a 50 ohm match. Makes tuning easy. Just adjust yer driven for resonance. I’ve done this on 10, 11, 15, 17, and 20 meter bands. Works beautifully, and without the additional lobes taking off at higher angles when using longer driven elements you avoid the lightening crashes and other unwanted noise. 73!

@@breakerbroke23 I get mixed up with a car repair saint or a guy that just does random atv breaking stuff, building stuff vids, but I typed it out different. I have seen the 390 channel around, you get ahold of some nice old radios! Is there a review of the Quad in this vid on either channel? Looks like another nice radio that needs immediate tech support to be more than a 10 meter with echo unit 😁

I also see peeps making end fed 1/2 waves out of coax that they hide in trees too. They seem popular on utube. Called T2L2 or something similar. You could also try a wire version of a 5/8 ground plane in that tree.
@jfrphoto01
@jfrphoto01 2 года назад
The T2LT is the antenna you are referring to. I have made them for frequencies from 7 MHz (40 Meters) to 28 MHz (10 Meters) and they work great both vertical or horizontal. The one I have for 10 Meters actually works down to the bottom of 11 Meters with a VSWR of 1:1.5 on 26.965 to 1:1.3 on 29.105. Not bad for a1/2 wave end-fed antenna made from RG-213/U coax with a 1:1 air wound common mode choke balun (also known as an ugly balun). The problem with a 3/8 wave antenna, regardless of what it is made with, is that it requires some type of matching unit at the base of the antenna. It can be anything from a Gamma Match to a Hairpin Match to a Loading Coil but is does require one. The vertical element of the 5/8 wave needs to be around 22' long and the ground-plane elements must be 104.5" and they need to be at a 90 degree right angle (horizontal) to the vertical radiating element.

Temporary dumbfounded here (me). Why are most antennas have 101½" long copper wire and not longer or even shorter? Back in the late 70's, my dad and I used a 50ft of 12 gauge insulated wire from CB to a selected tree that was kinda horizontal with the ground or earth and approximately 20 to 25 ft. Of ground wire going from the CB unit itself to a piece of rebar or grounding rod into the ground. If I remember, that was called a directional antenna. We talked from 9 miles East of Gettysburg, PA . as far as Frederick, Maryland. This was done on a 1968 Johnson 5 channel CB radio. Just a update, I still have said CB, but the mic was broken from all the moving I did.
@tedmead465
@tedmead465 8 месяцев назад
Tube radios were very forgiving of swr. 50 feet of wire is about 1 & 3/4 wavelength so it was probably close to being a resonant longwire and without a proper ground plane it probably wasnt very efficient. 101 to 102 inches is the resonant 1/4 wave size for the 27 to 28 mhz range.

I always worry about lightning hitting the wire . it is in the trees !
@breakerbroke23
@breakerbroke23 2 года назад
Yes it was in the trees, lightning not good either way. ie big antenna on the roof or little wire in a tree. My rule of thumb is, when a storm is near or on the way I unplug my coax.
@ke4edd
@ke4edd Год назад
@@breakerbroke23 @rayinpau.s.a.6351 That was our practice in my home as a kid. We had a 54 foot (freestanding at the time) Rohn Tower with a... Shooting Star? Beam... Was a four element vertical crossed with a four element horizontal and it had a quad for a reflector element. Never once did we have a direct hit. Until we grounded and guyed it. Fortunately, everything was unplugged. That was over twenty... Twenty five? Years ago. We moved shortly after and it was never erected again. But after my father and I earned our ham tickets in 1992/93 he started adding antennas to it, radios to the other end, and then guyed and grounded (properly) the tower. Made unplugging stuff during storms much more a part of our discipline. 73

ground radials put them at 45 degrees.
@breakerbroke23
@breakerbroke23 3 года назад
I have done this experiment in real world conditions. When out RVing on the beach in WA State, I mounted this antenna at 12ft off the ground. I tuned in on an AM CB channel (8) and locked in on 3 base stations having a local QSO, they were 40-45 miles across water as the crow flies. My radio, SWR meter were on a picnic table just a few feet away from my antenna setup, I monitored the and took pictures of their signal strength, in first test, with the the vertical radiator in the vertical position, and the ground radials hanging straight down. Second test, while I listened and had visual on the S meter I lifted a ground radial slowly and when I got to about 10 deg their signals came up 1 s unit, at 30-45 deg the s unit went up another 1/2 for a total of 1 1/2 s unit. Going from 45 to 90deg gave no improvement. This was in receive only, would the same apply in a transmitted signal? I don't know. They could not hear my transmitted signal. Later talking to them from my base station (30 miles apart) they said that static levels were very high due to living in town. BTW Deploying the remaining radials only made a slight increase in receiving one of the stations, not sure what he used for a Antenna. Thanks for your comment and Cheers.
@ke4edd
@ke4edd Год назад
@@breakerbroke23 I know this reply is way after the fact but I've read in several locations that receive performance gains are pretty much 1:1 with transmit as well. If you can quantitatively measure performance improvements in receive, transmit performance will improve comparably.
