In this Quick Sniff video we discuss one of the aspects of what we call Step 0 which is part of the Odor Pays training program for Detection Dogs.
This video is a quick overview of how we use food and play to help develop what our Alert (indication) to odor will be once we move into Step 1 of Odor Pays and we actually have odor present in the training.

Awesome! I love that you separated it from the actual scent work. This is the part I am building right now. I also see how you teach the dog to choose the alert (sit or down) based on location of the hide. I was wondering which one to pick and now I see both are needed!! Thank you.

Thank you, I train just 1 to 1 clients with dogs of all ages. Unfortunately a lot of clients wait until they have issues before brining them. I like to incorporate scent and this video will help rather than going straight into the indication.

How long of sessions do you “play” when starting out? Looks fun for the dog! You can see they really enjoy the game!!!

This depends on the dog in front of me and maximizing the session where the dog is peaking and meeting my session goals. You do not want to go to exhaustion or get the dog over threshold where learning drops due to over excitement.
