Thanks for your input, Survivor Man. But it probably didn't occur to you that that might have been the only available camping spot for people who are trying to climb a mountain.
What style of tent is this? It looks like more than strategic use of a tarp. I'm trying to get more camping spots instead of hotels for skiing in the Upper Peninsula. Possible to safely put some sort of small wood stove in there?
You dig out a hole for couple of reasons. It helps with sitting around the shelter, as you can use the centre block as a table for eating, etc., and with getting in and out of your sleeping bag and in and out of the shelter. It also acts as a "cold air sink" - the cold air sinks to the lowest point, keeping the shelter a bit warmer...
