I was absolutely glued (no pun intended) to this series for the best part of this morning!! Some of the classic aussie humour had me in stitches!! "... then I remembered that the guy who layed the gravel left his tractor behind" .. goes and gets the tractor to help his dads tractor pull the semitrailer with the cat loaded onto out of the shed! Another bewdy, " ... geez mate how log before you get your tinny in the water?" ... and another ".. amazing what you can do with a basket of wood glued together!" Thanks so much for such an awesome series!!!

Thanks Mr. Weston for such a great series of inspirational video's. For years I have been pining over wooden boats for want of one myself, with lots of dreams and little money, so it wasn't long before I came to the conclusion that I would have to build her for myself if I was going to afford to have one of my liking. I too had decided on a monohull and for years presumed that that was that (I became a huge fan of the Bristol Channel Pilot cutters). However I have started to shift my idea of what I want from a cruising platform so of course I have drifted on back to a childhood dream inspired by a book I read once called "sailing the farm" who's author claimed that if he had to do it over again would do it in a multihull!. Long story short I have been researching multies for I while now and stumbled across your fantastic video's!. Thanks for your calm conversational style and your inspirational example. Cheers!

Hi, thanks for your comment and sharing your journey. It is interesting how much we are influenced by our experiences or those we listen to or what we read and learn. Even before doing anything! But it is good to research well, before launching into a big project. And then you still keep learning and forming your opinion. I must say I'm happy I settled on a multi, I've never looked back or changed my mind. The experience of living on one only reinforced my thoughts. Lets know when you start building! 😉 All the best.. Hey Tim love the digger ethos. I have no issue building the hulls. After all been sailing since I was 5 and working on boats, both sailing and repairing for over 25. Not going to strip plank going to go the ply route. I know all the arguments but have no money so buying sheets weekly. The only issue I really have is the joints between the hull and the beams, and the beams themselves. As theres so many diffrent styles. Ive made my plans by mixing 3 diffrent designs I have full pans for to make it what I want. Its only going to be approx 30-32foot and for Australian waters. I also love you dagger board idea. Never understood why people dont go for a central board or as you did a large on for better tracking. Anyway love the boat and look forward ro having my hulls done by November. And if Woods can make a boat out of crap pine and not glass it, and it still be sailing t 30 years later Im sure I can build one thats glassed above water line that'll do me. Hope all well and would love to hear of any other adventures in building or sailing youve had.

Hi Angus. Your project sounds good, nothing wrong with plywood. I also have thought about building a cat in ply. Let's know how you go, it will be interesting to hear your progress. This week I hope to have a forum and members area live on my website so, if you want to share what you are doing.. And build a big board for it, it's important. I just published a post on the topic and you are it is good timing for you, you before you get too far into the build to decide what you want to build. More info coming on the site. Cheers Angus, all the best. Tim timwestonboats.com

Tim, this is such an inspirational documentary of a boat build project. My favourite part was the transportation to the coast...so much ruckus caused by one man's relentless dream to sail the seas 😂 Thank you for taking the time to share this story! Have there been any other significant ventures since this time?

Thanks for your comment Andrew. Yes, it's amazing sometimes, how much action one can stir up doing things.. :) No I haven't taken on anything quite like this since, but building another one has always been on the back burner. Creating these videos and the feed back they have generated has reignited that fire again though. I'm on the drawing board now ;)

How far apart did you space your forms? A couple of feet? Would like to hear more about how you went about centering them to one another, too. Also, as you rounded the curves with flat planks/boards, did you have to pre-bevel the edges to meet the other boards, or was that not a problem? Thanks so much for putting this series up on RU-vid!
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 5 лет назад
There is no bevel on the boards, Meadmaker. The frames are about a meter apart. There is more information in chapter 4, in my book "Building Tokyo Express", on the way the strongback was set up, on the temporary framing and about building her in general. There is not every detail in this book, but quite a bit of useable info if you are interested in building - timwestonboats.com/ebooks/ I'm glad you liked the series. 👍 Tim

Mr Weston , sailing a catamaran has been my dream since I was 16 , I had been looking for opportunities to work so I can save up to one , but watching your videos had inspired me and my brother to follow in your footsteps , I am asking for advice and guidance to where is the best place to start , you had also talked about running in to a book that had made your dream true , May god bless you , and always be an inspiration to others Akef Elkasir
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 7 лет назад
+Akef Elkasir Dear Akef, it is very nice to hear that you found inspiration from the videos. Enough to start with your brother. The book where I learnt most was the gougeon brothers book in boat building with epoxy. If you go to their website you can download this book for free, in PDF Form. I would also recommend building a small boat using the same methods, as a practice run for the real thing. You will learn a lot from doing this. I will have plans available soon for a small boat and there is an eBook I am writing with the steps and the technical details too, but both will take a little time more. Check out my website timwestonboats.com for a little more info. It is being added to. But register there for updates as they come. I'm off to a slow start but more things are coming.. All the best with your planning and keep in touch Akef. Regards Tim

Wow what an awesome project, absolutely incredible work. Just out of curiosity what was your level of boat building experience before you started this project?
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 7 лет назад
Thanks, actually Tokyo Express was basically the first boat I built. I had never used epoxy or worked with fibreglass before. I quickly built a small boat as I was setting up the shed and ordering the materials to start building TE, just to get a bit of practice but it was learning by doing really, with the cat. I had built a house and other things, I like tinkering 😉, so it was just learning another way of building. I don't think building a boat is that hard. It is certainly not rocket science. I think everyone who is a little bit handy and likes making things can do the same. It just takes time!

Hi Col! Thanks for that. Much appreciated. I should have the 2nd video up today or tomorrow. And yes, I think epoxy is a wonder material.. You can do anything with that stuff.. It doesn't seem to matter too much about which brand. I have used a few and they all do the same. As long as you don't get it on you, it is quite user friendly too. See you in the next video.. Cheers Tim
@colrodrick8784
@colrodrick8784 8 лет назад
That was my next question. I also have the Westsystems book on boatbuilding. Of course I knew it was also a bit of self promotion. I've bought several study plans for Wharram cats and the materials list always pushes Westsystems epoxy. I was planning to go generic - plenty cheaper on Ebay these days, BUT I was a bit wary that I might be unstuck. means something getting your perspective. I noticed your cat is still sailing down in Vic. Hopefully you didn't sustain too much damage from the storms the other day up there. ta Col
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 8 лет назад
Yes, there are plenty of cheaper brands out there. I am no guru on whats available, I have only used a few different ones, but from people i have spoken to and my own experience, it seems they all do the job pretty much the same.

@mechanicalexpertsheatingco3362
Hi Tim, thanks for sharing your project. I'm interested in building a catamaran some day but a little concerned about the resale value. Were you able to sell your boat at a reasonable price without taking a loss? I'm concerned about potential buyers reluctance to buy a $150000 boat that was built at home by an amateur builder. Of course I'm not building a boat to turn around and sell it, but sometimes unforeseen things do happen. Thanks.
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 7 лет назад
Hi B Dub. I am not really up with the latest prices in the second hand market at the moment, but I sold my boat for $240,000 AUD 14 yrs ago. It was more than double the material costs and while less than a production boat's price, was still pretty good price for the time I think.
