Just built a fractured granite retaining wall using 200 ton of boulders. It was heavy, time consuming, expensive, but in the end it's permanent.

I honestly dont trust a boulder retaining wall above 6 feet.

I was taught by an old dutch guy, more than 30 years ago, retaining walls are supposed to be twice as thick at the bottom, as they are the top, that way the weight of the soil behind it, does not push the bottom out or the top over. I cant draw in here but the angle on the backside is supposed to be slightly steeper than the front, if your wall is 2 feet wide at the top, it needs to be at least 4 feet wide at the bottom. I am not trying to " critique " Stanley's work, I am just trying to pass on what I was taught, everyone makes their own choices as to the methods they use. Everyone works different, everyone has different idea's and experience, after spending more than 30 years doing heavy equipment rentals, I've seen alot of different methods.... :)

i have building rock RETAINING walls for 30 + years using quarry rock that has been drilled and blasted, you don't have rounded boulders that can easily move , as he said before use angular rock for back fill so it stays in place , then the wall should be built out of angular rock, he should be using a larger crushed rock behind wall like a 2" to 4" , the crushed rock should be 12 to 18 inches think behind rock wall, never ever use filter fabric behind a wall it will plug up over time,

What would you recommend for an old concrete wall that is failing but still is working. The concrete wall does not go into the ground. It is only about 3 feet tall. However, it holds back the dirt well. We don't want to dig up the wall and put in another concrete wall. We are looking at boulders next. We want to put a boulder wall up against the concrete wall. If the boulder wall placed up against a concrete wall fails as the concrete one is failing, we won't be bothered by the look of boulders moving a slight bit in our lifetime. Our biggest concern is that we are on land that has been known to have some underground water. We have worked on many french drains to keep water away from our land. However, there is always that threat of a small amount of water. What are your thoughts?

For clarification I've watched a few of your videos. On this wall you said your installing a vertical filter fabric because of looser substrate, and to never use or avoid using it on clay. but in another video you state to never use vertical fabric.

Do you have any videos on staggered rock walls? also ive always been kinda brain washed onto always using fabrick on basicly any way so with clay have you ever had problems with anything washing thew on the walls? And also I had a couple more questions if you have an email by chance?
@adicurrant

you didn't put 3/4' stone behind the wall , why ? you allways say to put 12' minimum of 3/4' angular stone ...
@philbridges1307
@philbridges1307 7 лет назад
thats on a modular wall. boulders have enough space between them to allow drainage through the face

Do you need to remove the timber wall before building the boulder wall? Or can you just build the boulder wall in front of the timber wall? I have a short timber wall 3’ tall, that is failing and I’d like to just put fabric and build the boulder wall in front of the wood. Terrible idea?

I need to finish my backyard. The problem is most of the hill is ledge rock. What would be better? A Boulder wall or a solid poured wall. I have literally a ton of boulders on my property already that I just need to round up.

How thick was your base for a wall like this, and what did u use for backfill and base? Seems like these boulders are so huge they would move any base you put under them
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 9 лет назад

If the house is "Settling" into the river, what stops the weight of all those rocks from doing the same. How does that work?
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 9 лет назад
+Trooperandcooper Ale The previous wall was failing-allowing the footings to slide down the hill. By installing a new wall and packing the soil we have stopped the gradual landslide.
@trooperandcooperale3057
@trooperandcooperale3057 9 лет назад
Oh so due to the wall failing. That's right you were putting your hand in the gaps in the wood. Is the client keeping the look of the solid rock wall or are there going to plant it up. Personal give me a dry wall. It looks awesome as is.
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 9 лет назад
+Trooperandcooper Ale I am not sure if they plan on planting the wall itself or just the grades.
