I loved these as a kid back in the early 80’s. I always wondered why they removed the cab of the slave. Surely it would have been easier and better for drivers just to have coupled the 08’s nose to nose and have a Class 13 with a cab at each end ? Great build!
It is easier to drive an 08 bonnet leading. View is worse, but the 13s were on hump signals, so didn't often need to see the groundstaff. If cab first, all the dials and gauges are behind you. Also some of the controls.
Removal of the cab was just for view and they will have run cab back so all the controls are infront of you rather than next to/behind the driver. They could have always run it cab to cab though but still easier minus 1 cab or just have a gangway door between the 2 cabs
Great work, well done Jenny.👍 Particularly appreciated the advice and techniques you shared re. weathering; that was really valuable and has given renewed confidence to me.👏
Also - this was an excellent project. Glad to see that you are getting into building things yourself. I suspect that you have underrated your ability to do this in the past.
@@JenniferEKirk The class 10 were built not with the English Electric 6KT prime mover, but with the 350hp Crossley diesel engine type ESNT6 and two Crompton-Parkinson traction motors. These shunters were originally numbered 13117 to 13126,later D3117 to D3126. The following were fitted with the 350hp Lister-Blackstone prime movertype ER6T and two GEC type WT360 traction motors. These were numbered 13137 to 13151, later D3137 to D3151, D3439 toD3453; D3473 to D3502, D3612 to D3651, D4049 to D4094. The following were fitted with the 350hp Lister-Blackstone prime mover type ER6T and two BTH traction motors : 13152 to 13166, later D3152 to D3166. There were slight variations in weight between 47 and 49 tons. The external appearence was the same as the 08s. All versions had 4ft 6in diameter wheels. Hope this info is of help.
Nice build Jenny, I just completed a Midland Valenta - 3D Printed Lima/ Hornby Class 156 Detailing Kit. I now a better detailed Northern Settle / Carlisle 156 at a fraction of the cost to the Realtrack class 156, like most people I couldn't afford to spend £275 on the Realtrack one, so a Hornby at £100 with Midland Valenta kit at £30 a bit of fun and a saving! 👍😊
NIU is great he sold me part of the kit to do a pair of custom 08's with ballast bufferbeams ive done a really old hornby and a kitmaster 08 but i am contemplating going the extra mile and fitting the kitmaster up as the slave but its engine room doors and roof are removed showing a customised Rusty Rails 08 engine with the cylinder heads cut off and West Hill Wagon Works radiator so i could in theory have a lone 13 that runs and the kitmaster slave/calf/slug as a dead unit. Ive been thinking of doing a similar thing to a pair of 04's too as ive now got 4 of them (3 kitmasters and a bachmann) 😅
Now this is real railway modeling, not just playing trains. Lovely mode🏁.A project I have wanted to attempt my self, (as if I need another project, I still want to super detail a Hornby Pug.) I would also need to find 2X class 08's which are very hard to come by in my neck of the woods. I think you nay have had a better paint finish if you had used an Airbrush, or Rattle can (aerosol) paint for the model especially on the black chassis. i hope that this wont be the last locomotive you a tempt, having dipped your toe into the warm water of locomotive construction.
I have no idea, though I know they needed the extra weight of the bufferbeam extensions. Maybe BR didn’t want the temptation of them getting ‘borrowed’ for other work, and it also meant the in cab signalling and radio kit only had to be fitted to one cab.
@JenniferEKirk Thanks for the reply. I saw you at Model World Live walking around with Mr Iron Horse, but didn't say "hi", as I thought you deserved to have some personal time enjoying the show without being stopped every 10 yards or so by well-wishers.
Unfortunately / regrettably NIU require payment via PayPal only. I don't have a PayPal account and no intention of creating one. Good video, pity these suppliers choose to use a niche payment system.
