Here is a short video on how to build a stretcher frame for a canvas and how to stretch a canvas on the frame. This is how I build my frames, from small scale to large scale.
If you have any questions feel free to ask!
Thanks. Ty

Thank you so much for this video. I started grief art therapy a year and a half ago and I'm continuing it at home but was having a hard time affording the canvas boards. This will help so much!

Well Ty this vid is perfect! I've learned to stretch canvas previously on purchased stretchers. My saw has been waiting for me to get busy and learn how to do this myself! Thank you!

VERY effective video, Ty--it helped us a lot! Our corners didn't turn out quite as well as yours, so maybe if you update it someday, maybe spend a little more time on that. But for our first time, I'm very satisfied--thanks to you!

Spray water on the back and let it air dry or hair dryer it so it shrinks if there are tiny buckles. If they are larger buckles it's a bigger issue which you need to manually unpick and staple again. Hope that helps.

Great video. Thanks so much for publishing it! I'd like to make a really large stretcher. Do I need to put in extra supports? Is it dressed pine you're using? The stretcher I'm aiming to make is about 2.2m square.
@TyClark
@TyClark 3 года назад
I would use extra supports, it never hurts. I believe I used pine in that video, that Is usually my go to price wise.

What size staples are you using?
@berky1976
@berky1976 Год назад
This seems like a video for a strainer (fixed corners) not a stretcher bar setup (free floating/adjustable). No glue, nails, or screws are used in a stretcher bar setup.

Great video-Love your artwork! I also work on unstretched canvas. I usually bevel the inside, is that a waste of time? Also does your gun take staples and brads?
@TyClark
@TyClark 7 лет назад
Dale, Thank you! I really don't see the need to bevel. Of course it adds strength the the frame, if you put enough braces in the weak points of the frame it will be strong enough. We all have our methods that we learned or adapted too!
@CrochetNewsNetwork

@@TyClarkI think I would prefer your method as opposed to the beveled or chamfered edge. Where does one fine a canvas stretcher? I will Google as well😊

Have you ever seen how they do upholstery? Is there any reason I shouldn’t do it the way they do it ? Like with all the clean folds?
@TyClark
@TyClark 5 месяцев назад
I would say, do it however you want! We all do it differently. I was just giving artists years ago some info on how I made mine. All my friends have their own methods too! :)

What type of wood do you use? How do you prevent the frame from warping in a corner?
@TyClark
@TyClark 3 года назад
It all depends, usually pine. I have never had a frame warp in the corner? Using the 4/45* corner braces I believe it what prevents that.

@@TyClark my canvas frame warped even though it has the 4/45 corners. How can I fix it? The canvas was purchased and not made by me. Thank you

@Ty Clark also, my canvas will not hang flat against the wall.

Won't dust eventually show that line on the inside of the frame if you don't bevel it?
@TyClark
@TyClark 4 года назад
I have never beveled a frame in 15+ years. Many artists I know, have been mentored by or seen frames of theirs, have not used bevels either. I have no idea:)

Do you bevel the front of the wood that the canvas is rubbing against?
@TyClark
@TyClark 2 года назад
some artists do, or buy beveled stretchers. I do not bevel it.

Do any of your acrylic or oils crack using this method? I love to paint first and stretch later but i dont wanna sell someone a canvas they will crack when they get it stretched overseas.
@TyClark
@TyClark 5 месяцев назад
never. I have painting with a lot of texture and some with minimal- I know where the folds will be so I paint accordingly.

Hello sir, how thick should the wood frame should be
@TyClark
@TyClark 2 года назад
That is all preference. I like it at least 2" (5cm) myself. If you go to museums they are all kinds of sizes.
@stjameso15

I see one potential problem ... you didn't leave a beveled edge to left the frame & center bars off the canvas .. this will leave clear bar marks in the painting.
@TyClark
@TyClark 5 лет назад
Stephen, that all depends on the thickness of the canvas, texture etc. None of my work have bar marks and I frame all of my pieces this way- from small scale to 15 foot large scale works.
@suzannahkolbeck6973
@suzannahkolbeck6973 5 лет назад
He has already painted, so this is less of an issue. If you are stretching a canvas and then painting no bevels = marks on the canvas.

Can i strecth oil painting canvas?
@TyClark
@TyClark 2 года назад
Sure. just make sure it is dry. I would suggest with oil that you stretch the canvas first before painting, if the layers are really thick.

@TyClark
@TyClark 2 года назад
@@sorryrocco we call them stretchers, no matter what is used, since they are used to “stretch the canvas”- in arts school they use the term stretcher, galleries, museum etc. i have never heard them called “timber frames” but they are timber…
@sorryrocco
@sorryrocco 2 года назад
because that's what you have built a timber frame, or let's make it more simple for you to grasp, a wooder square!!, so in ten years time when the canvas cambers you will be f##cked because you wont be able to to stretch!! The canvas, you will have to remove the entire canvas.

sorry- but this is not right. The canvas is not supposed to touch but a small part of the stretcher bar. There should be a raised lip around the outside edge, of some kind.

It really doesn't matter, I use both. I have work in galleries and museums that are on my own bars. No curator, museum curator, gallery staff has ever complained and my work is always immaculately stretched:)
