Since this video was made, we built a 300 SF shop specifically for making caskets. See that video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JQYySTfivqM.html. Such a relief to not be in the dingy old garage - and now my wife can park her car in the garage (fancy that!).
After leaving school way back in 1945 I went to work for Wheatley Funeral Director's in Birmingham England. I was a coffin maker, the design being different to your's. The top's and bottom's were the same, the sides at the shoulders however were different. The bend for the shoulders were done by cutting about 15-20 grooves into the sides where the shoulder's would go. The timber was bent to fit the top's and bottom's of the coffin. Your design was simple but effective. As you can imagine the English way of doing it gave the coffin a smooth classic look. But which ever design is used the occupiers could not care less. My regards, Bob Harrison Aged 92. An Auzy bloke.
Thank you, from the heart, for the video and the plans. Just a few weeks ago, I made a coffin for a person who was slowly growing wings, and has now fallen asleep in the Lord. It was such an honor and a grace to make someone's resting place!
Mom requests a simple pine box. Do you have dimensional plans for this. My mother is only 4'10". It is her request for a simple burial. (She wants to mitigate the expenses of her funeral.) She has charities that she thinks they can use money more than the expense of her funeral. (I'd like to add some of the Silk Blankets & Pillows that she has in life into the coffin.) She is still alive @ 91 years. (Expensive linens that need expensive care are NOT a good gift to charity IMHO.)
Sounds like your mom has a good plan for a simple burial (and that's great that she's still alive at 91!). I can send plans via email (either for this or a simpler rectangular box). Just go to my website (naturescasket.com) and shoot me an email.
But will all cemeteries allow these great, hand-wrought coffins in? Many of them restrict you to using only approved "Big Mortuary"-made caskets and headstones. Total price fixing scam!
We've made about 500 caskets - I've never had a cemetery that hasn't allowed one of our caskets. Many do require vaults (plastic or concrete enclosures that go around the coffin to keep the ground from slumping). There are more and more green cemeteries popping up - you can find a list at www.GreenBurialCouncil.org.
I'm making one out of request from my dad. He doesn't have to much longer. But my concern is his size, he's a very large man. About 6'9'' 450 lbs. Is this coffin design sturdy enough?
I've tested our rectangular version of this to over 650 pounds with no issues, so I think as long as it's well built, it should be fine, but you may want to add some additional reinforcement. Also, securing the lid in more places will add strength.
You'll need about 16 boards at 1"x6"x8', plus a little wood glue and drywall screws. Should be able to tally that up by looking at pricing at your nearest hardware store. Best of luck!
That was a one-of-a-kind coffin, made almost entirely from scraps from a remodel project I did. I'm sorry, I don't have plans for it. I do still have it available for local pickup in Colorado.
