How to Build a Commander Deck 

Take note of how you feel as soon as you draw certain cards in your deck while testing it. If you constantly feel sad when you draw a specific card, it's usually a good sign to kick it out for something else.

I ended up gravitating toward commander a decade ago because I was poor. Never had to remake standard decks over and over, or get 4 copies of an $80 card. You can make a super budget deck and slowly upgrade it over time. Granted you can say the same for normal decks, but it never felt that way. Everyone was always way more competitive and quick win oriented. Plus I like the challenge of commander's limitations to deck building. Great video man. Keep up the good work.

I think the easiest way to introduce and teach someone magic is with a casual 40 or 60 card deck, or a 60 card deck split in half and played with your hand on the table

I am a firm believer in "all decks must have a nuke-button combo that wins the game from hand and/or command zone." So I recommend commander's spellbook for searching for 2-3 card combos. If your table dislikes combo, it is also a good idea to search for whether you accidentally leave combo cards in your deck or not.

This was super practical and a really great video that concisely gives the viewer info that a lot of other videos on the same topic I feel kind of gloss over. I’ve seen a lot of these “how to build a commander deck” videos from tons of creators and yours feels unique and super helpful. Great job man!

Always struggled with making edh decks, but I feel reinvigorated by this video. Seemingly, I rather take a lazy approach by edhrec copying than practical custom building and knowing the deck fully. Thank you!

This is the best "How to Build a Commander Deck" I have seen yet. Bravo! You say exactly how you build a deck. Every other video gives some information but never truely how to build one. Oh and.... you forgot the wasszzaaabeeee guys. :( Thanks for another great video.

My biggest issue is learning how to limit my card pool. I find all these card that synergise with my commander, then card that compliment what the deck is trying to do, then finding ramp, draw, and removal that happens to also have a bonus effect that combos with the deck (such as sac to draw over lose life to draw in a sacrifice deck, etc). That's when I wind up with 170+ cards, and am stuck with either fine-tuning the deck down to the cards I'm just not willing to let go, or building a separate EDH deck just to have a home for the other cards. My other issue is finding two different commander that I absolutely love, but have different colour identities, but are both basically trying to do the same thing. I hate the idea of repeating tactics using the same cards in both decks.

arcane signet is one of the only 2 mana mana rocks that doesnt ETB tapped or filters mana as well, pretty huge staple.

Commander was great for me. When I was a kid my oldest sister had a boyfriend who gave me a box full of magic cards. It was mostly bulk but there were also a lot of rares and Legends in there (A handful of cards sitting in the 10-50 buck range too, so nice value for sure) I played with my brother some but he dropped off interest so I didn't get to play much until I was in senior year of high school. Some of my friends were big into Magic then, and I got joined into the group. Then one of them got the Draconic Domination deck that released in 2017, and I decided to build one of my own to play commander with him, then the entire group got into it and it opened up our decks to way more opportunities so we haven't looked back since!

I am the ultimate newbie. It would be cool if you did some card searching how to, and how not-to-do in a video. That would be cool because I went down a rabbit hole just to find cards that end up not synergizing or have a plan in mind I can’t figure out how to create. I’m such a creative person so I want to find a deck that does exactly what I imagine. Alas, I’ve wasted so much time.

I run 30 lands but it's a goblin deck where most of the cards are super cheap. I never really have land problems.

Enjoyed the content it was fun to see your process laid out so clearly and I agree with about everything you said. I'm not sure how helpful this will be to people who are brand new to mtg as a whole since you have many references that only make sense to someone who already plays. "Ramp cards" "aristocrats" "scryfall" Love the content, I'm just always looking for great tools to seduce my friends to the dark arts of MTG and more specific, commander.

I like to divide the decklist by categories like ramp, card draw, tutros, etc. Then decide which amount of cards are needed for each one. Good thing to do before starting to research cards.

My biggest challenge when building a deck is to limit myself to less than 5 colors. I always feel like I'm missing out on the good on-theme cards from the other colors. Witherbloom lifegain comes to mind. It's possible but wouldn't it be so much better with white?!

This is a very helpful video... I have a question about what you said about complimenting the commander.. I'm building an Oloro deck and it's emphasis is on using life in exchange for mana or value. Do you think cards like Blood Clock or Umbilicus are good choices? Both of those cards force all players during their upkeeps to either pay 2 life of return a permanent to their hands

I run anywhere from 33 (bare minimum) to 40 (maximum) lands per deck depending on what the deck consists of. I think any were is not enough and higher than 40 will lead to unnecessary mana flood.

I do 34 lands and 10-12 ramp cards as a standard but other than that I build decks the exact same way.

i dont understand how you find good card for the deck in scryfall

My first edh deck was garbage, but I spent many games just seeing what worked and didn't. Eventually I polished that turd. But that was 10-12 years ago, even before the command zone started. My latest deck has morphed about 1000 times as I retool what I want it to do but it spends more time being thinks with over being played with. And that's the rub. The resources are great, but they are a trap. Edh was made as a casual format, sometimes you gotta just play the game. Lop

How i got my first Deck (andstarted playing mtg): 1. Have a Friend with 20 different Decks (50-300€ per Deck) 2. Playtest them to figure out if i like the game and how i like to play 3. Look up a precon that comes close and buy it 4. Look up a budget upgrade guide and build it 5. ??? 6. Profit
