I love the use of the wood you have on hand. No $100 for a single 4*4 panel you'd be deathly scared to make a mistake on. Simple plywood and some OSB thrown in for good measure. This is a summer project for my sons and I to do. Thanks for the simple idea and design!

Many of the other designs on youtube are too out of reach for the majority of us common folk with minimal woodworking skills and knowhow, and much less tools. You sir, showed us a simple way to do do it and it could even be done with a hand saw, hammer and nails. Thank you!

I used to do a lot or Black Powder Rendezvous camping. These camp kitchens were in every camp. Usually accompanied by a second (more open box) that contained the kitchen supplies: food stuff, napkins, paper towels, as well as spices and others things. This second box set beside the first in a table or in some cases was purpose built to set below the stove box and the two them had a small low table that they sat on to get the stove to cooking height. I see comments on weight...yup heavy weight. The lightest were purpose built for weight reduction wood skeleton clad with 1/4 Cider on the outside to make up the box and the shelves inside. Thanks for bringing up some good memories.

I was looking for ideas other than drawer systems to build a kitchen in my suv! I like the drop down door and I can bolt the box into the platform so it can be easily removed. Thanks for sharing this.

Great box! Thanks for the straightforward video. How did you determine the placement of the shelving? Did you place everything on a table as you'd liked it packed and then take measurements, or did you build it and then get items that would fit the various cubbies?
@FunWithWoodworking
@FunWithWoodworking 3 года назад
I designed it all on the computer first using dimensions found on the web for all of the items. I then went and bought everything and stacked it using scrap boards and refined the sizes. The box is built around the items in it.
@SMafam5
@SMafam5 Год назад
When designing small spaces like a camp kitchen I think it wise to plan/acquire for what you will put inside first, then design from the inside out. But even with years of family camping, you take different gear for different kind of trips. I have planned for my largest hopefuls on shelf (but not heavy cast iron). I can always go more minimal - reduce it down when 1 or 2 of us travelling & fill with more food and less dishes/pots & smaller stove.
@raulrrojas
@raulrrojas 3 года назад
Very useful! Maybe a little too heavy for me.
@FunWithWoodworking
@FunWithWoodworking 3 года назад
It's not too bad if you take the cast iron plate out. Otherwise I'm good to carry it about 50 feet by myself. I get another person to help if any further than that.

Awesome video. I'm looking to build my own chuck box after spending my whole scouting life around them and this was insightful. One question though, why did you use nails instead of predrilled and using screws?
@FunWithWoodworking
@FunWithWoodworking Год назад
It's made out of 1/2" plywood to keep the weight down.If you don't get the screw centered right, it will poke out of the side.
@mjremy2605
@mjremy2605 Год назад
I did not like the glue, nails, and the screws driven in without pre-drilling holes, but hey, it works! Very nice box you made, light, compact, and so useful for camping. Unload on a picnic table or tailgate party and set to go! Very inspiring. I would love to know what table saw brand you used. Seems like you dialed a knob to adjust the fence each time.
@FunWithWoodworking
@FunWithWoodworking Год назад
Thank you for watching! The table saw is made by Skil. The fence has a small handle, I just tap it a little with my hand each time.

Great design! I like how you used the plastic covered box and a couple of wood spacers to size one of the compartments. Is there any particular reason you did't use plywood for the front doors too? Thanks for sharing.
@FunWithWoodworking

Thank you very much. I made this project out of leftover 1/2" plywood and I ran out so I used some OSB that I had laying around.

This was my first one so it was a prototype with a lot of trial and error. We had plans to have a merit badge class at my house later in the year but COVID restrictions stopped it from happening. We are hoping to do it later this year depending on how everything turns out. Thank you for the suggestion.
