Loving the videos. So informative. I currently have a landscaping business and I am thinking about venturing out into hardscaping instead of subbing out all the jobs. I have watched so many different videos but I like how thorough you are. I'm kinda curious about the materials you choose to use as your base because most around me use sand and what you think about the new products coming out. Have a blessed day!

Nice job, thanks for sharing. Looks like quality work. I am curious if you explain to the customer that the end result of a dual face wall with only a single row of blocks is going to have different size block faces on the upper rows with almost every block having non-factory cuts? As a customer if I was given a choice, I would live with my choice. But if it wasn’t explained to me my OCD would pick that out . Would a second row actually be cheaper because you are not cutting every block?
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper 2 года назад
Thank you, I totally understand where you are coming from but in this situation, double sided was far more important than joint lines. I have OCD beyond belief, trust me, but nothing is more cheesy and ugly in my opinion than open spaces between blocks behind a wall. Especially when it is clearly visible. I went back and forth a few times about the joint lines, ended up deciding the double faced was more important.... Very cool that you noticed it though, good eyes! ✌

Great video. I've seen "pie" cuts to fill the gaps too but they never look right. Do you find that the walls don't need glue with gravel and the plastic retainers? I use glue on every row, not just caps, but I am not convinced it's worth it or necessary.
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper Год назад
Thanks! I think the pie cuts are very ugly.... I glue all corners and blocks next to the corners at a minimum. Sometimes I put dabs of glue on the back corners of every block but I never glue the entire bottom of every block. I think that is overkill for sure. The plastic interlocking retainers are enough for the majority of the wall. ✌

i dont understand how a wall stays in put over yeara w no footing. ive seen this done on aome other channels too. so i guess my question is why no footing?
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper Год назад
Some of the longest lasting walls out there have been dry laid on (open grade) stone. AKA clean' crushed stone. It allows water to freely flow down through the sub soils and permeates even deeper. This crushed granite is a better footing than concrete. After compaction, it is solid. With the benefit of having open spaces in it. It allows any moisture in it to drain, but also gives it space to expand into when it freezes. The biggest reason concrete pads fail and crack because they base material they used is so compacted and dense, that it holds onto water like a sponge. So when the winter comes and freezes the class 5 or dense grade, it heaves the pad up. Then when the material thaws, the pad sinks unevenly. Causing it to crack and settle. It is the same thing with a footing for a wall. No matter what you do, the ground will shift slightly through the different seasons. Dry laying the blocks on a material that holds on to the least amount of water is key to longevity. Even if the wall lifts a little with the freeze cycle, it will settle back into it's place when it thaws. If you were to put it on a footing and movement happens. It will not settle back into its place correctly. The longest lasting natural stone roads and structures from roman times were built on clean crushed stone. I did so much research on this stuff 4 years ago when I switched to this backfill method. There is no better way in my opinion. While I do set somethings on concrete footings, I still prep the base the same way.

@TheChristianHardscaper

Thank you, You could build some really big walls with this block if you want. But once you go over 4ft tall (8 blocks high) you are supposed to get engineered plans before you build it.

At 9:53 to find the angle did you guess or is there a trick to find the correct angle to interlock them?
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper 9 месяцев назад
Sometimes you can find it by eye, but if not, just use a tape measure. You want the line you make to cut the same distance from the edge of the cap that is already laid down.

On the top row of block, is it not possible to cut in the V-shaped space to match the lower blocks?
@TheChristianHardscaper

You could probably do it that way, I don't see why not. Never really though of that and Im not sure how much easier or time effective it is but not a bad idea at all

Great content!! TechoBloc shows the top of the first row of a free standing wall at grade, so top of first row flush with paver top. Is this really required?
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper Год назад
Thanks! On a 4ft high wall or more, definitely bury the first row completely. But a sitting wall, laying the 1st row half way buried is perfect. It locks it in but also gives you the perfect height. 2.5 rows and the cap is 18". That is the most comfortable sitting height that I have found. 21 is too high and 15 is too low. So burying the 1st block halfway is ideal 👌✌
