How to build a custom fishing rod part 1

Building your own fishing rod can seem like a scary thing, I should know I have been putting off long enough. But when it gets down to brass tacks I am not sure it is any harder than building fishing lures and to be honest it feels a little more enjoyable. So I have decided to bite the bullet and build myself a spinning rod.
The blank was given to me about three years ago when I made a film at a rod building factory called “The rod makers.” I did manage to get a job there nine months ago so I am no stranger to building rods, but because I work in a factory, I never work on the same rod right the way through the process. But for my own rod I will be taking ownership of all its errors.
My favorite type of rod for general pike lure fishing has been a nine footer, which as I am mainly a bank angler it gives every cast a few extra yards over a little stubby six footer. There is always going to be two camps with fishing rods, spinning rods or baitcaster rods. Personally I use both but prefer spinning rods for lighter lures, so this build is a spinning rod with casting weight of 15g to 45g which should cover everything from little cranks to lightweight jerk or glide baits.
For this video I am really just concentrating on the tip section, finding the spine of the blank, marking out for the guide feet and whipping them into place all standard stuff. The whipping method is a little odd, and it is not something you would use in a factory for production as it is too slow, but I am at home building a rod for fun not speed and there is something to be said for enjoying yourself.
There are so many ways to approach rod building and even in my short time I have worked with range of people who use very different methods to reach the same place so it is always worth looking around for other methods and styles of rod building but find what fits for you.
The rod blank
Harrison Advanced Rods VHF spinning blank 9ft 15-45g 1/2oz to 1 11/2oz

I will publish the full spec and spacings in the next video

Having built a couple of dozen rods over the last 30 years the single most important tip I would like to pass on is to always test and adjust your ring spacing before whip anything. This is particularly important for a multiplier / baitcaster rod where you'll be fishing the line along the top of the blank. Glue on the tip ring, tape on the butt ring in the optimum position in relation to the reel seat and spigot. then tape on the intermediate rings in there approximate position. Tread some line through, put a load on and see how the line sits between the rings. You can keep adjusting the spacing, or even add or subtract rings, until it looks right and you're happy.
@saskcarp

That is an excellent tip (no pun). A very important one too!

After 30 years of amateur Rod building one tip I can offer in your wrapping is when you tie the tuck under wrap at the end of the wrap instead of using string to pull through the wrap use a guitar E 6th string usually the thickness of it is .010 , about 5in long bended in half , it makes it easier to pull through and you can do it with just one hand and it will never break if you drop it you can pick it up with a magnet on a stick instead of bending over give it a try you'll be amazed at the difference

might give it a try, but someone who plays a guitar in my house is not going to be happy

Hello grettings from Croatia,is the finding spine same to apply to telescopic bolognese rod 7m long,I have naked telescopic 7m bolognese rod which I need to put guides,the only thing I see on each section where the guide is going ,is the connection line of carbon connected when manufactured( this is naked version of bolognese rod),as I search for the info over internet, on some sites I see that connecting carbon line was suposed to be the spine and the guides will need to be at 180 degrees from that line( opposite side of that line , because the joint line is the tuffiest part of section). On some manufactured rods there is a clear white marked line where the guide is supposed to come ,but in my case that white marking is missing. I have seen Your videos of lure making,few times ,and I found them very educational and interresting,Your videos are amazing,everything well explained.

Paul, Another great video. I have watched it several times. Thank you for that. Just finished my 1st Conventional/Casting Rod. Broke all the rules: Paracord for Handle Snake/Fly Guides wrapped then CA Glue/Shrink Tube to secure Nail Polish on top as a finish Found that the Line lays between the Guide Feet on the top of the Blank exactly following the curve of the Blank. Will be mounting a Penn 9 and drift fishing chunked bait. Please keep the videos coming. Steve Jetskisportfishing.com PS I welcome comments....
