How to build a dawless synth and sampler live performance setup you can use for live shows V2!

This is my 2nd incarnation o a daw-less live performance setup. After a year of experimenting with my first rave box, it had limitations I needed to address. I am now really happy with this next incarnation and I intend to use it to develop a awsome live show and release at least one album before I change it again!

Wow. And I am just getting started. I have a tr-8s, hydrasynth explorer arrived yesterday. Dreadbox typhon on the way. The Roland S-1 seems to work well and sound good. I also have a collection of volcas that I am not too crazy about.

Mate this is absolutely amazing, very smart how you've put everything into a flight case, once I experiment more with my live setup and bring it down to the bare minimum I'll definitely be exploring with getting a case like yours + the modular! Might hit you up for tips when the time comes :) For the next setup have you thought about having 2 cases instead of 1 really big one? Might be better for transportation at the price of having to connect a few cables between them. I saw some really smart people just put the I/Os directly into the back of the case, looks really neat! Subscribed and excited to see what you come up with next!

I really like your setup and overview of everything you use. I'm thinking of going dawless in regards to a recording standpoint. I like recording om my computer using different software, but I want to gain more independence from having a dawless setup. I'm a bit on the older side, and back in the day (80s to early 90s) even when MIDI was "new", everything was mainly done without automation and in real time. And recording from home was done via 4 tracks and also more.. towards reel to reel if you had the money. Good luck to you as you go forward with your music.

Hi Mr.Tom, thanks for listening. Yes the good old days before a computer! I was lucky enough to have an early Atari at school for midi sequencing! Good luck with your endeavours, please do get in touch if you have any questions incase I can help in any way. You can read me on email if you go to my website incase I don't always se comments in the you tube section, it seemed to have a issue which hopefully has been resolved, apologies for the late response.

So you just take stereo outs of the mx1 to record or are you taking a multitrack via mx1 usb to a computer?
@Wildb0y
@Wildb0y 2 года назад
So all the stuff your hearing and will hear is just the stereo out. Partly because that's the ethos and also the mx-1 FX do not come out on a multi track channel (which is pretty crazy it doesn't) so you would miss that part of the performance. For my single releases next year i'm going to do multi track recordings and then do the final touches / additional production in the studio, as thats where some of my skills are, and it wold be. shame not to encompass everything I do. The heart of the music is creating sounds, composing, recording into the machines then practicing live arranging of sounds and structure, along with manipulation the sounds so I can record it all in one take....thats the idea anyway!
@dodgeatmosphere
@dodgeatmosphere 5 месяцев назад
the mixer can tackle the compressor and limiter functions as well by tracks and also on the master ch?
@Wildb0y
@Wildb0y 5 месяцев назад
The compressor and limiter are only on the stereo out not on individual channels. The mastering section is subtle and has a bunch of determined settings, you can switch through them and hear the difference they are making.
@owensmith427
@owensmith427 2 года назад
great stuff... how did you isolate the kick drum from the tr8s and put it on ch1 of the mx1 ...????
@Wildb0y
@Wildb0y 2 года назад
HI Owen. oN the tr8s you have mix out, and 4 additional outputs you can assign the sounds to got to. In the KIT menu is where you can select which outputs each drum sound goes through. What I do is make the kick come out of channel 2 which I then connect via a jack to input 1 of the mx-1. The rest of the drums come out of output 4. they go though my strymon pedal for a bit of tape saturation before going into input 2 of the mx-1. hope that helps

Ha sorry, yes I meant analogue kitchen. Audio kitchen make pcb's of hardware clones, eg a SSL bus compressor.
@stevejordan1968
@stevejordan1968 Год назад
Do you use any compression? I didn’t hear you mention anything?
@Wildb0y
@Wildb0y Год назад
Hi Steve. So the strymon Decco will very slightly compress the drums with its saturation. The blue box output has a gentle mix bus style compression going on which is mixing the sampler, synths etc together Apart from that the only compression comes from the looopstaion, some on the acoustic instrument inputs and also in its master out. The loop station has master compression in its main out which seems to have a limiting quality to it also. I have this turned in at 3%. Any more and it starts to become obvious. So all of those stages are subtle but over all help in giving the sound a bit of solidness to its sound. Most importantly is getting the levels right. You don’t need much compression for many of the sounds if you get this right.
@Wildb0y
@Wildb0y Год назад
Steve, apologies I answered this question thinking about my latest setup. In the setup you see in this video, rave box mk2 rather than 3, the only compression is the the ‘mastering’ button on the mx1 output, which is a subtle compression and limiting.
@stevejordan1968
@stevejordan1968 Год назад
Thanks for detailed current and video setup. Sounds like you preference a transparent lighter touch? It’s not a subject that gets much airtime. I’m waiting to get a Digitakt for drums and sequencer for other hardware. That has a compressor now but was wondering if I get a more FX colouring compressor or if I’d not end up using it much. I currently use a 90’s Mackie mixer with no effects. I realise it depends on music genre and taste.
@Wildb0y
@Wildb0y Год назад
@@stevejordan1968 hi Steve thanks for the question. Apart from the obvious dynamic control compression can do there is also it rhythmic element, the way you set it up to groove with what ever it compressing. This timing is what can make or break using a compressor well. When it comes to the digitakt, if you are using drum samples then ultimately you don’t really need compression as you are able to control the dynamic range using velocity. But you can use compression in this situation if you want to create a certain vibe / feel. In another situation with the digitakt where you are using a vocal sample for example, then it’s quite possible, if it is not already processed, to use the compressor tame the dynamic range of the vocal along with the other sounds you have sequenced. So yes it is dependant on the genre if music you are making. But just imagine a decent studio, they don’t have limitless compressors at their disposal. You don’t need as much compression as we think we do, especially with the limitless supply daws! Hope my ramblings are helpful. :)

I have a problem running Ableton live 10 and 11 with a Roland MX-1. The program freezes at startup. I work with windows 10 (The system is installed clean). I didn't find an answer to my question on the Internet. It is necessary to disable MX-1, then Ableton live starts without problems. The drivers are fresh and reinstalled. How can I fix this problem? P.S. Sorry for my English, I used Google Translate.
@Wildb0y
@Wildb0y 3 года назад
Hi Gabriel, have your latest firmware update on the mx-1? I think its version 1.05. Also depending on how you are using the mx-1 you may need to put it into mixer mode. To be honest I have had digital glitching problems with the mx-1 when trying to track all the different inputs separately. I have heard you need to turn plugin and turn on the mx-1 AFTER you have turned the computer on for some reason. The only other thing I can thing of is there is a problem with your USB port functionality. There is a chance that the mx-1 just inset working properly. I now only use it as a mixer and then record the stereo output into my UAD interface, which is fully committing to to the mix. I then only use the computer to get the files ready for video or streaming. This work method is very liberating compared to the in-depth DAW mixing and I producing I do when working with pop artists!
@gabrielraynes1577
@gabrielraynes1577 3 года назад
@@Wildb0y I updated the firmware to version 1.05, but Ableton live still freezes. When you connect aira synthesizers directly to your computer, everything works fine. Sometimes there are small freezes when opening the audio device manager on the computer.
@Wildb0y
@Wildb0y 3 года назад
@@gabrielraynes1577Hmm, not sure what's going on. I guess the only real way to check its not the mx-1 that's the problem is to borrow another one and connect that, see if it does the same thing. If you have a laptop you could take it to your nearest music store and plug their display one in, see what happens?
