Woody garden material can be challenging to compost, but instead of getting rid of it, use it to make a dead hedge. They're an easy-to-make structure that can be used as an attractive garden feature, a windbreak, or to obscure things you want to hide away from view. In this video, I'll take you through how to build a simple one that's about twelve feet long and 18" wide.
For this project, you'll need eight stakes or straight branches about 4 feet (120 cm) long. You'll also need plenty of woody and dried-up garden waste, a measuring tape, and either a mallet or spade. If branches or stakes need cutting, you can use a hand saw.

I think this is a great idea for a bit of privacy in my garden from my compost bins

Just amazing how these bees are so friendly. The bees that grew up knowing would bit like nobody's business. Those are really peaceful bees.

Well, they wouldn't permit me to do that kind of work in front of their home in the spring through autumn. It's cold out, and aside from a few buzzy-bodies, the rest sensibly stayed inside 😂

Tanya Happy New Year to you both. If I may offer a little tip when you next have to put in a post like these, put a piece of wood that's flat and longer than the post is wide on the top and hit that rather than the post itself. This has two advantages, firstly it stops the top of the post from splitting from the hammer blows, and secondly its protection for your hands if you miss with the hammer take care of your hands you only have the one pair 🙏

I'm glad I've read this thankyou! Been wondering how to protect the top of the wood I'm knocking into the ground as have done a little of that recently on my plot. Thanks for advice!

I have access to a huge weeping willow. First time trying to make something hopefully resembling the fence. The "dead hedge" would work but unfortunately it's a temperate rainforest zone, may not last until August. 😀

Oooh this is brilliant...I have an older ugly fence and this would be brilliant as a backdrop. I bet it would look brilliant mixing in live willow.

A friend here on the Island does that! It's a fantastic idea since the willow 'stakes' become living supports. Plus, you get a willow harvest.

The dead hedge is a great idea with multiple uses. My wife and I just signed up for your newsletter. Look forward to receiving them. My wife just ate a nice fresh salad out of our garden here in North Florida. Cold weather on the way this week, but we still have plenty of greens growing right now. Happy Gardening in the New Year! Thanks for such a practical video. Projects like this, especially using what you have on hand really appeal to me. Manicured, formal gardens are fun to look at but real gardens, working gardens, are the ones that feed us. I would say the working gardens not only feed us with food but also feed us spiritually as we use our creativity to make them useful, productive, and aesthetically pleasing. Side note, yess seeds are starting to invade my brain and I’m trying to ignore them. Of course all I need to do is look outside at the 5 feet of snow and it cools my jets,lol.😎. TeresaSue

Hello :-) - could brambles be used? They grow so quick and take over. I leave some in our garden for wildlife, but have to cut it when too much of it in the garden. Is it ok to use or too prickly for wildlife? Also, we sadly have a dying privet hedge because of honey fungus... so, obviously, the dying/dead wood is with 'pest'. I would guess it is best not too use for a dead hedge? Thanks in advance for your advice 🙏

I’ve got the stakes to contain my “spontaneous” dead hedge and this spring’s project is to put them in the ground to make it neat. I don’t have a lot of wood, the laurel hedges are done professionally and the waste is removed, but I use the current pile as some kind of mixed compost site when I don’t want to chop garden waste such as tall grasses, shrub clippings etc into my compost tumbler. My only hope is that hedgehogs will find it!

I'm sure that they or other creatures will! I already keep spotting birds alighting on the sticks that jut out of mine, so I'm going to resist the urge to trim back any pieces.

The reason for the dead hedge in front of them is as a windbreak and to elevate their flight path. I explained this in the video.
