Build this multi-functional DIY ladder chair, which looks like an ordinary dining chair but easily folds into a sturdy step-stool for multipurpose use. Originally invented by Benjamin Franklin, this modern ladder chair has an updated classic style. Perfect for a tiny home or small space like a pantry, laundry room, or walk-in closet.

laundry room! I would sit in it to fold laundry and the ladder function would help me reach my top shelf where I store my detergents, Iron, and other laundering needs that I dont want my kids to get into.

Love the design and functionality of this piece! I have been looking to get one of these for a while and I could seriously use one of these in my bedroom as a gentlemen's chair/step stool for our master bedroom closet but I live in the city in a townhome and not much room to build something like this. Do you guys sell these by chance???! All the other styles I have seen are a bit older and I really like the modern touch of this design!

i was thinking to make an copy of this (but differents measurement, an bit higher :) ) for my dads CARWASH. sometimes when we wax cars roofs or wash cars roofs and its not all normal hights. so we have view step stools or then an huge lader. i thought for fun make something between those 2 sizes. thakns for the video!

Thanks for a wonderful project. As someone else pointed out it's at a bit higher level than beginner but it has so many uses it's well worth taking on. Just a minor correction. On step 25 of the building plan it says the two-piece seat is cut to 13-1/4" when the diagram shows 16".

The idea and concept behind this construction is mind-boggling, It's uses are unlimited. . .replacing light bulbs, use it as an extension on the table to reach higher heights like ceilings, use it during house wiring, use it to reach a higher branch that requires cutting, trimming high fences. .. you name it, , , ,when you have a utility chair-cum-ladder like this at home it will help you overcome a lot of those hard to reach height which we encounter many times. .. I am going to make one like this, but my design will use strong aluminum alloy instead of wood and joinery will only be made of aluminum plates and aluminum rivets because I want it to be weatherproof and also to last for generations. .

Hi. Thanks for posting this. I have been wanting to build one of these fore a while. I am not from America so I have got to convert all of the dimensions to metric. That's not a big deal, but can some please tell me what 5/4 x 2 x 8 is? Thanks.

I don't have the plans, but 5/4 would be the thickness of the board. 5 quarters of an inch. So one and a quarter inches thick, 2 inches wide, and probably 8 feet long?

It would be nice to be credited, obviously we all like to get credit for our work. Are you planning on creating a video or a blog post? It would be very easy to link to a source and mention where you found the idea and plans. If you are just building this for your house you can tell all your friends that you did all the work!!
